Ever notice that real woodworkers never seem to be in a big hurry? Seems like I am always rushing to do things. I've made a few pretty nice furniture and deco pieces over the years, but haven't made anything to this level. Skills are one thing, but you also have to have the temperament. Maybe I need to watch a couple Ashley videos before I start... so calming and enriching.

I have watched a lot of machinist (metal working) videos and that has helped me slow down and be more exact and precise. there is no hurrying on a metal lathe or milling machine. so my woodworking has gone up a notch because of it. there is a balance between slow and putting food on the table, though...

Beautiful chairs. And it interesting to note that they are able to run their business and their homes from solar power. That dispels the arguments of those that say it can't be done

For my senior and 4th year of high school cabinet-making I made a chair. Of course, this was before I realized the smart thing to do was to measure existing chairs for proportions and sizing...it was a very challenging project. Chairs like this one, however, astonish me all the more with respects to how much trial and error goes into perfecting the forms. What you see in the video must surely only be a fraction of all the early design work to go into such a piece. Marvelous job and video...thanks.

Thanks for taking us behind the doors to their shop for a look into their awesome work.!! Woodworking to me has always been passionate. I watch as his father scurries around and it reminds me of myself years ago, always trying to keep up with the workload and demands of selling your craft. I closed the doors on my cabinet shop in 2004 and don’t miss it, and for 8 years afterward I wouldn’t take any project on and took a break. I always loved designing and the lure of crafting something for the first time, the interaction with, and giving a customer something unique. When you catch yourself falling into a production mode it will strip you of what you came to love.

What stunning chairs. Level of skill and craftsmanship just calls out as you look at these chairs. When I saw them I was just Oh my they are beautiful and then of course I started looking to see how they were put together. I guess I like woodworking. Can you image where humans would be today if we didn't have wood to work with, still living in caves and freezing probably. Ashley keep up the great videos. It is a great thing you are doing and you do it well.

That is what I always wanted to do; make furniture. Unfortunately the opportunity to make a living doing it wasn't there when I went out into the "real world", and my career choice didn't leave me with much spare time to get into it on even a small scale. Now that I am retired, (not by choice though), and have the time, I'm playing catch up in procuring the tools and relearning the skills I once knew so well.
Great video as always Ashley! I really like this series where you visit different woodworkers throughout the country, woodworkers that the mass audience have probably never heard of.

I'm surprised that anyone would saw Madrone into planks. I used to have a half dozen on the acreage of Redwoods - Santa Cruz county Ca. Madrone is an ancient species of wood that has scales as old bark - sheds them in the winter. The wood can be 20" or so in diameter, but the trunk might flow through two or three 90 degree turns! Mostly used for firewood. Only commercial use was small slats in blinds. I have turned bolts from my wood pile - fire wood - and made many cups and small items. Often the wood would pop and split due to the wood releasing pressure from bending and twisting. I had a Bolt - 1/3 of a trunk fly apart when turning a candle stick. Beautiful peacock like - no colors - tans and oranges but sparkle is there.
