  • I know everybody and his dog has reviewed this camera, but as someone who's used it for a lot of years, I thought, what the heck, I might be able to contribute something worthwhile to the database.

My grandfather had this camera and it was so beautiful I couldn't stop looking at it. Eventually I got several of his cameras and this is my favorite. I've used it a lot. The battery situation is irritating but I just use an alkaline substitute and I regularly adjust the ASA as the battery decays to match another camera's meter. I've found this solution to be much better than worrying about the voltages.
I find the rangefinder patch rather hard to see compared to a couple other rangefinders I have from the 70s. But certainly usable.
I love these leaf shutter cameras that can handle any flash sync.

Hi Rhett. Thanks for sharing your story about the Canonet.
I think Canon really nailed it design wise with this final model. All the features and a nice size.
Sounds like you have got around the battery problem In your own way pretty effectively.
I agree about leaf shutters, it might just be me but I believe these cameras are inherently sharper than curtain shutters because of the lack of internal inertia within the camera.
      Cheers, Howard

I inherited one of these, along with an Olympus 35SP. Both are great cameras.

Hi Les. You did well. Two of the best rangefinder cameras from the golden age.

Among film cameras, this is still a well regarded and very useful camera. Note that the contemporaneous Olympus RD is practically identical in terms of size, weight, features, and superb lens performance. For some reason, the RD seems harder to find and is usually more expensive. One knock on the camera is that the battery tends to die because the meter is "always on". Cannon envisioned that users would put a lens cap on the lens, which effectively "ffs" the meter. In fact, you can turn off the meter and save the battery by just switching the aperture ring from "A" (auto exp.) to any f-stop, as the meter is only on when the camera is set for auto exposure.

Hi Randall. These cameras were and still are very desirable cameras. Also the 40mm was an excellent walk around focal length.
I don't have and RD but do have the DC which shares a body and lens with the RD. I think the build quality of the Canon is better.
That's good advice about moving it off auto to save the battery.

great video. i'll be buying a canonet as my 1st film camera. by any chance, do you have the ebay link to the battery convertor/adapter?

Hi, thanks for the comment. If you can find a good one I'm sure you'll be happy with it.
As for the battery converter, if you search on eBay there are quite a few. Just make sure you look for the ones that convert the 1.5 volts to 1.35 volts, these are about $30.00 Australian. There are some much cheaper ones which are only for changing size, they don't change the voltage. Have fun 😁

EXPLANATORY NOTE. The reason that I had to keep taking it off "A" to fire the shutter was that the battery was flat. It has been replaced.

If there was a way to uncouple the light meter lock-out, whilst still in Auto mode, it would be my perfect camera!

Hi muse on film. Interesting idea although the lockout was done for a reason. Manual is always an option.
These certainly were the apex of the Canonet range. Excellent cameras.
