      Just did an engine swap on a 2000 gts. 220k and I pulled it for low compression due to worn piston rings. The car had never been warmed up and had been ran on regular gas a few times and it ran fine when I pulled it. Toyota is a legend.

    Just to clarify, Toyota themselves did not offer the TRD supercharger for the 7th gen Celica. It was for the 03-04 Corolla and Matrix (05-08 with a custom throttle body adapter plate)but because all 3 vehicles used the same engine you could install the supercharger in the Celica GT. The downside to it was that the supercharger would not clear the hood and an aftermarket one was to be purchased to clear the supercharger when closing the hood. Great video regardless.

    This video is rather inaccurate.. while I’ve only owned one in my lifetime, I’ve done a lot of research and read a lot of celica specific forums (not to mention lotus, and other forums relating to cars with the same exact engine)
    Now I will specify that I know more about the 2zz than the 1zz, but that’s because I own the 2zz.
    First off, there’s no egv on this engine because their is no exhaust regurgitating system on the 2zz engine in the celica. 2nd, oil consumption is in the 00-02 1zz’s due to poor piston rings (which can be fixed)
    Ok now I’ll tell you the issues I’ve had with mine. Originally bought it from a guy that wouldn’t give much info.. I was new to being a mechanic (am now A&P aircraft certified mechanic) but it came without the speedometer working.. tried everything, turns out it was something to do with the aftermarket alarm system.. took it out, spliced original wires back together and it worked fine again.
    2nd issue was a random misfire, sometimes being p0400 (random cyl) or sometimes it’d throw a specific cyl, 2,3 or 4
    Upon digging into the engine, the rocker arm was broken and the intake cam was badly damaged ($500 repair) it turns out the dealership has been known for their poor metallurgy in their intake cams.. why the intake only? No idea.. but some speculation is on misguided oil sprayers on the top inside of the valve cover, some say the oil coolers on some models (euro, or lotus’) was causing over cooling resulting in thicker viscosity.. not allowing the oil to flow enough to get to the cam.. idk but you can get performance intake cams from monkey wrench racing to correct this issue, as well as performance rockers if so desired. It was rather bazaar how the rocker arm broke, it was the lift side of the rocker not the roller, and where it broke off, caused the valve cap to come off the top of the valve as well, both pieces landed in spots that didn’t cause issues and they stayed there. One beside the head bolt, and the cap was in a recess by the exhaust valve. I was actually able to still hit lift with no noticeable issues with one intake valve inoperable for the first year or two I owned the car. Insane luck in my opinion!
    Another issue has been engine mounts, I’ve replaced all 4 at once and chewed through mainly the rear engine mount within 2-3 months, poor aftermarket rubber im sure.. solution was to add polyurethane inserts, this also corrects factory issues of wheel hop on hard launches and corrects a bit of torque steer. You can feel a moderate increase in direct engine vibration to the steering wheel but mainly at lower rpm’s (you can adjust idle rpm @throttle body to raise it to minimize vibrations) but it’s not too bad. Some people claim it’s so unbearable they have to remove them but I find it tolerable.. especially since I’m hitting lift almost every time I drive it (higher rpm’s you can’t even notice the vibration transfer at all)
    Another issue is cosmetic, the clear coat on my white finish is flaking, absolutely ugly but I don’t really care much about it, will end up painting it one day but for now I’d rather put money into the engine.
    Another thing to consider about this engine/car is that the oil pump is known to blow up (mostly due to driver error, aka, downshifting it to rev higher than the rev limiter) so be aware of potential engine failure by downshifting too harshly..
    Another thing people say is an issue is about the oil pans, they b***h about The 2zz not having baffles , but it’s not meant to have baffles, it operates just fine the way it comes, and I’ve hit lift in a corner with the oil sloshed to the side and no issues yet (all previous issues, cam and rocker arm came with the car when I bought it)

    I had a 03 GTS and never came across any of the "problems" mentioned. Oil consumption was an issue for a 00'-02' Celica GT due to gummed up oil accumulating in the pistons' oil drain holes. Toyota fixed the issue with later models by adding two additional drain holes to their pistons. To fix the issue, you could've just bought 03+ pistons.

  • @2zzcam594
    @2zzcam594 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    2zz is a superior engine compared to the 1zz. The 1zz had oil burning issues between 2000-2002. 2zz lift kicks in hard and will rev as high as 8250rpm. It made an impressive 100hp per litre. However, the 2zz has lift bolt issues from 2000 to mid 2002. They are both great performing motors but be selective when choosing a Celica

    • @K00t3rBr0wn

Transmission fluid started leaking from the axle seal. Got it replaced and it was okay but unfortunately someone had wrecked into the car before I could see how long it would last.

This is by far the most reliable car I've owned and many of the problems you reported I have not experienced with my car. There was a recall on the filler valve in the gas tank, and the local dealership fixed at no charge. The only issues I've had with this car in the past 16 yrs were sensors. The first was the TP sensor, which was a cheap fix. The second was the O2 sensors and I had both replaced. Overall, this car is quick and very good on gas and I have no regret in buying it. I've heard there are Celicas out there with 500K + milies so this engine is very reliable if you take care of it.

Last week I had a cops chase me because he had a hard time catching up to me and his excuse was my car is loud 😂. There are car guys who can play with stuff under the hood without buying performance parts and then we have car guys who run to autozone for cold air intakes Thinking that’s going to boost the horsepower. What I did under my hood is not legal. There are parts you can remove that come from the dealership and the reason why they are there because of government regulations standards. Buy removing some parts will give you a hell lot more horsepower. This is a Warning if you get busted you will lose your car. No oil consumption and no egr valve at all on 2zz. These are 1zz problems. 2zz problems are: oil leaks from timing cover gasket by timing chain tensioner, crank pulley(harmonic balancer) outer ring detached due to rubber failure, but maybe that’s unique to Florida and hot climates in general, broken lift bolts (1,50$ each on dealer, 30 min job before they’re broken, my first engine had original at 110k miles, 2nd engine they broke at 60k miles), oil pump failure around 120k miles, which was why i have replaced the engine. No over-revs, no oil light. It just didn’t supply enough oil volume to feed the engine, and #4 cylinder rod bearing gave out. Comparing new to the old revealed shaft in new was bouncing around and in old it was stuck in place and barely moved by hand. Other than that - great engine and will take A LOT of abuse. Both of my engines had never had oil consumption (1st i’ve driven for 16k miles, 2nd now at 8k miles), i always change my oil every 3k miles using whatever synthetic that’s on promo in advance auto parts at that moment. But in general, i’ve never realised how fun the car really is until i’ve bought one. An owner of almost 3 years.
