the 2zzge is one of the most reliable 4cyl engines with many examples exceeding 250k miles without repairs or problems and it is impressive for an engine that lives above 8,000 rpm! the only one who wants a proper and good oil with quick changes. also in another video it says how good the matrix xrs engine has, which has exactly the same engine!! scotty has me confused!
Scotty, by watching your channel I have learned so much. I have a 2012 Hyundai Veloster with 130k miles. By seeing the many videos over the years it burns no oil, is efficient still, and by adding refrigerate, it still blows cold air. The only problem is with rust since I live in Central New York. They use brine to salt the roads. It is reeking havoc with electronics and causes rust, but I have mitigated the effects also by listening to your advice. You're the best.
I remember seeing a 09 camry at an auction with 439k miles. That thing was quieter than a baby's breath and rode super smooth. They took great care of that car
That's awesome maybe my mums car will still be super smooth when I'm 16 in five years cause she's giving me her car then and it's mint with no rust it is very very reliable it's an amazing oldsmobile Alero
A taxi driver in Mexico bought an used first-gen Camry auto, may be 1980, drove it everyday on rough streets. He said his odometer already went over once, so it had about 1.5 million Km with original engine and transmission, no major repairs, only oil, fluid, tires, shocks changes. Mexico is very hot, but cloth seats and plastic interior panels were all original and intact.
OR.....if u Turbo or SC the motor. I'm hoping my 18 Civic SI lasts at least 200,000 miles with the small 1.5 Turbo. With almost 40,000 miles so far NO oil dilution problems.
As an owner of the "Yamaha" 3S-GTE engine in my 1992 Toyota MR2 Turbo. Its been pretty good to me. I don't know about the 2zz but Yamaha isn't all bad.
The oil starvation issues it’s solved by changing the oil pan with an aftermarket one that has baffles inside. That gets rid of the problem and the engine is pretty good but most people didn’t do that and blew them, by now most of those engines ether have the problem fix or they’re blown
There is an upgrade kit out there that has better oil pump gears, oil pump and bigger oil pan that brings oil capacity up to 6 quarts from the stock 4.5 quarts. I had an 03 Matrix XRS with the 2zz-ge and the entire time I owned the car, all I did was oil changes. And oh boy did I ever beat the crap out of that car, hitting lift @6700 rpm nearly every time I drove it. It could take & sustain 8700 rpm like a champ! Best, most fun car I ever owned!
I owned one of these, a 2002 model with the 140bhp engine and manual gearbox, face-lift version. The most fun car to drive I've ever driven and the only one I ever bought new. It could potter about quietly like a sensible family car no problem yet when you felt like it, it would make you feel like a racing driver - the lightness of the car, the steering and the gear change just felt so good. What wasn't so good was being over taken by a turbo diesel hatchback on the motorway even though my right foot was almost through the floor! So, yeah you could drive it fast without losing your license!
I owned a Pontiac Vibe with the 2ZZ-GE engine. I got it with 65,000 miles in 2012 and lost it to Pennsylvania rust in 2017 when it had 138,000 miles. The engine has a bad rap, and maybe it deserves it, but I got lucky with not having any problems with it. And it was a blast to drive. The engine makes a beautiful sound at and above 6,000 rpm. It was a daily driver for my now-ex-wife and she loved it and running it at high revs even more than I did...I had to take perfect care of the thing to keep odds of failure as low as possible. Thankfully, she liked to go fast in a straight line. Obviously, you have to thing long and hard before buying a car with one of these engines with high mileage (essentially all of them today) but they are undeniably fun.
2zz engines are strong as well. They break when people over rev and race them. I have seen plenty go 200k miles. The 2zz engine is also designed by toyota, apart from the head which is designed by yamaha. If you are looking for a toyota celica/t-sport go for the 2zz and dont worry about it.
@@abel3619 My 2ZZ blew up at 206k but I bought the whole car (a 2000 GTS manual, non Action Package in Carbon Blue) for only $1500!!! It's getting a new motor but it did have a 2 cylinder misfire which caused it's death so yeah. Love my Celica, and especially the 2ZZ.
@@zznick660 mine misfired on every cylinder but I didn’t drive it. I changed all the plugs and coils and then a vacuum leak which was present enough to cause the misfires to come back. Now I just have a cat code and drive it everyday to work
I bought an 02 celica for my first car about a month ago with the 1zz engine and it’s been a dream to drive and after I put in a new radio with apple car play the thing is just as nice as my dads 2020 crv
@Celi.1360 yeah you're wrong there... both obviously can blow up, but I've had 3 2zz loaded cars and none of them have blown their engine... yet. It could blow it up tomorrow, I guess. I really hope it doesnt happen 😂
I oen a Celica t sport 2zzge UK model for more than 2 years, banging the rev limiter every day when I drive it, racing it almost every weekend with my friends, if you change the oil regularly the engine can't be killed. The only problem with them is the weak gearbox, that can broke easily, I changed my gearbox after my differential broke when I had a stage 2 clutch for around 6 months and racing it regularly.
I also have a 2001 Toyota Celica with the 1ZZ-FE engine with manual transmission. I've had it for 4 years and am the second owner. never had any problems with it. drive really good, it's not fast but enough for daily driving. and with (243000 km) 150,993 Miles many more can be added with good maintenance!
@@unbelievableflyingdrunkenp755 While thats true, its still a far inferior engine to the k20's honda were putting out at the time. Plus, it's a 4-banger you want to be able to rev them out without it shitting itself
@@ket_wav1013 yeah, the hondas are better but the 2zz is definitely not as bad as Scotty makes them to be. This is like what, his 3rd video about 2zz engines?
I've seen many give problems due to having what Toyota calls a "metal matrix" cylinder liner. It's not a press in insert but a spray on coating similar to the old Vega and just doesn't last like a cast iron liner.
I had an 04 GT-S back in the day and drove it hard almost everyday. Never had an issue with the engine and sold it with 140k miles. Not an insane number on the clock, but still fairly reliable and an Uber fun car to drive with that motor. On the other hand, my father drove a Celica GT with an auto trans and it felt dangerously slow. Almost had a tough time merging onto the freeway. I'd take a GTS over that slow 4 banger in the GT any day of the week.
A couple of videos back you were saying how good the XRS Corolla was. The XRS also has the 2ZZ-GE engine. Only the cylinder head was designed by Yamaha.
Hey Scotty, I got an 03 Pontiac Vibe/Matrix with a 2-ZZ and 6 speed, Original engine 299385 not so easy miles, no ticks, smoke or anything. Could full me but seems like a solid motor to me
I've never been a fan of Toyota or Asian cars in general but man, we can only dream of getting such quality & reliability in a car built here. So sad the American manufacturing became synonymous with problems when originally it was the standard for the whole world
Those Yamaha 3.0 DOHC V-6 engines in the first generation Ford Taurus SHO also had a reputation for blowing up. They also burned oil and blew head gaskets at will. My favorite Celica was the RWD one in the early to mid 80s. They weren't powerful or fast but they were about bulletproof.
The 2Zz is actually a fantastic and reliable engine, even more so than the early model 1zz’s since they have horrible oil burning problems. The biggest design flaw of the 2Zz is it has a very shitty oil pan that wasn’t baffled and it could cause oil starvation issues while racing. If you change the oil pan or don’t drive like a race car making right turns at 8000+ rpm then it’s perfectly fine.
A lot of older toyotas like this 360K mile example become family heirlooms. My Toyotas stay in the family. I gave my brother a 91 4x4 Toyota pickup (pre-tacoma) in 2016 when it was 25 years old. It is now 30 years old and still a daily driver, no mechanical issues in 30 years. *Even toyota doesn't make them like that anymore*
Not saying he's wrong but the gts (6spd) isn't as bad as he makes it out to be, as long as the oil pump and lift bolts are taken care of its a very reliable and powerful 4 cylinder I have over 300,000 kms and still get 550km to a tank
In 1967 my father purchased a new Toyota crown from the brochure, hadn't seen one. As he drove it out of the show room he told the salesman he was going to drive it to Canberra from Gippsland ( near Melbourne) and back on a family holiday, if it was to break down he would return and drive it through the showroom window. Thankfully 10 years of great motoring on some very average roads.
Don't know about the Celica with Yamaha but the Taurus SHO the Yamaha designed engines breathed life into a 4 door sedan coupled to a 5 speed manual...
Scotty knows real stuffs, I had an 89 Nissan Bluebird U12 1.6 manual for 16 years never broke down on the road once , sold it, till this year it was still going around ..saw it once! Got a 2.4 L Stanza later for 3 years only and engine blew!
Scotty. 2zzge are fine. Just need to swap the oil pan from à 1zz and you will have no issues at all. Mine as 200 000 miles and it's running great and it's use for track day's ;) 😉
Ia have a celica 2zzge for more than 2 years, banging de rev limiter every day and no problems with the engine, the only issue is the weak gearbox of the 2zz.
Okay but the same engine (2ZZGE) in the corolla, you made a video saying how its a great engine. So why is it a great engine in a corolla but a bad one in a celica? When there is literally 0 difference what car it is in
I love my 2001 Toyota Celica GT. More reliable than all the women I have ever met COMBINED!!! It has 300,000 miles on it and runs awesome!!! Constantly take care of her. Recently, changed spark plugs, front and rear bearings and hubs, new fluids, oil, power steering fluid, new paint, new rims, got her some coil overs and rides low to the ground. I love to driver LOW and SLOW. Love these Celicas so much I bought my sisters which was about to be sent to the junkyard. Nope. Got her a new engine, gonna get new paint. Love my Celicas.
Should I get rid of my 05 corolla xrs with the 2ZZ? Original owner, 160k, never had to do any work on it except change the battery once, head lights and oil change. Even still have orinal breaks and pads, though i need new pads now. Hard to get rid of now since it's not worth much anymore.
the 2zzge is one of the most reliable 4cyl engine with many examples exceeding 300k miles without repairs or problems and it is impressive for an engine that lives above 8,000 rpm! All he wants is a proper and good oil with quick changes and for track use only oil pan! If pass with 2zz oil pan the 1.1g force in turn then there is a problem of oil starvation. With aftermarket or 1zz oil pan that doesn't happen! also in another video it says how good the matrix xrs engine has, which has exactly the same engine!! scotty with all due respect you have me confused!
Scotty I disagree with you about the 2zz engines. They only really break when they are over revved and raced. Also Yamaha designed the head, and toyota designed the rest. Similar to the JZ (2jz,1jz) series engines
The 00-02/03 1ZZ are well known to have huge oil burn issues due to piston ring problems. It wasn't solved until the 04-06 models. The 2ZZ is a great engine but needs a few mods like the oil cooler and a few others.
It's funny the Yamaha 2ZZ-GE engines in the Celica were so problematic because the V10 they made for the LFA is apparently one of the best sports car engines ever made.
Similar to the 2ZZ engine, the LFA V10 engine has a Yamaha's high-speed valve head, revs up to 9500 RPM. Both engines scream like a fighter jet when they rev up.
My 1zz-fe was very poorly maintained when I got it a month after driving my 01 celica trd it got a knock currently sending it to a shop to get completely rebuilt but it is the best engine
My Celica with the 2zz, 6 speed manual, is still going hard with 370,000kms on the clock. Oil starvation is only a concern if you drive it hard on the track.
What about Scion Xc model? Those were made by toyota, 2.4L 4cylinders. Nice little reliable car, if driven properly. Part of the reason why the higher spec engines don't last is not because they're poorly made, but the folks who bought them for that higher performance and usually beat the sh!t out of them, driving and revving harder. Just like the same reason you can find many 6 cylinder model mustangs holding up better than the 8 cylinder models.
TOYOTA POWER I HAVE CAMRY SE 2013 4 CILYNDER ENGINE I BUY IN 2013 0 MILES I USED FOR TAXY IN NEW YORK CITY NOW MY CAMRY HAVE 270,000 MILES AND RUNING LIKE A DREAM I CHANGE THE OIL EVERY 5K MILES PERFECT CAR
Man my celica has the 2zz its so fun yea VVTLI activate at 6000 rpm but once you switch the oem oil pump to the mwr billet oil pump and switch the oem 2zz oil pan to the 1zz oil pan you’ll be good the problem with the 2zz oem oil pan is that they don’t have a baffel on them idk why they didn’t put one on a high revving engine but the 1zz oil pan bolts right on or if you want to do the pricer way put the Moroso oil pan
Mister kilmer i have a toyota runx with that 2zz engine and im a mechanic. I bet u that engine is not gonna give me the trouble because i dont always over rev it to the power range and its gonna last 500000 miles that way.if you dont beat the heck out of it, IT WILL LAST.
That's the OHC version of solid lifters , my Focus is same , it is known as DAMB Direct Acting Mechanical Bucket. Most reliable design and better for higher revving.
Personally, I prefer the engines with the screw & locknut type of tappet adjustments... Like the older engines had...No special shims to try to find, no hassles with valve adjustments.
Once i smoked a civic type r hatchback with my celica gt auto gear and my car was stock . Man celica with yamaha engine can pull that vvtli kicks in yoo...
Hey Scotty, I just got my hands on a 2003 celica gt. With 140k miles. There is an issue where the rpm. Odo, and the mph gauge quit working at times, but most of the time they work. All other gauges work. Any suggestions?
You are wrong, sir. My '02 GT-S has 416K on the odometer and still runs strong. Btw, it's still running on the original tranny and clutch! It all comes down to how one takes care of their car.

the 2zzge is one of the most reliable 4cyl engines with many examples exceeding 250k miles without repairs or problems and it is impressive for an engine that lives above 8,000 rpm! the only one who wants a proper and good oil with quick changes. also in another video it says how good the matrix xrs engine has, which has exactly the same engine!! scotty has me confused!
My 2zz is 215,000 miles and still going strong ❤️2000 Celica SX Australia
It's a Toyota!
It takes care of itself!
So basically when you cram a lot of HP into a small engine, it decreases the longevity and reliability of the engine.
Unless it is well engineered where it will still last
Well if the crate motor Helliphant and the 632 Chevy are new examples of very large displacements with 1000+ H.P.
OR.....if u Turbo or SC the motor.
I'm hoping my 18 Civic SI lasts at least 200,000 miles with the small 1.5 Turbo. With almost 40,000 miles so far NO oil dilution problems.
S2K is most hp per liter in a NA production car revs to the moon and still dead reliable
yes!
As an owner of the "Yamaha" 3S-GTE engine in my 1992 Toyota MR2 Turbo. Its been pretty good to me. I don't know about the 2zz but Yamaha isn't all bad.
Exactly. In the motorsport world Yamaha is top notch build quality. It's not like them to miff an engine.
The oil starvation issues it’s solved by changing the oil pan with an aftermarket one that has baffles inside. That gets rid of the problem and the engine is pretty good but most people didn’t do that and blew them, by now most of those engines ether have the problem fix or they’re blown
@@Cristobal_Ygnacio_Arriaga so was the engine oil foaming? Was that what purpose the baffles we're supposed to solve?
@@GreyFox250 when the cars where driven hard the oil would move away from the oil pick up causing the issue. The aftermarket pan solve this problem.
Honda is no slouch either...especially motorbikes and ATVs
My 2zz has 230,000 original oil pan, no broken lift bolts, changed em recently
@@abel3619 My 2ZZ blew up at 206k but I bought the whole car (a 2000 GTS manual, non Action Package in Carbon Blue) for only $1500!!! It's getting a new motor but it did have a 2 cylinder misfire which caused it's death so yeah. Love my Celica, and especially the 2ZZ.
@@zznick660 mine misfired on every cylinder but I didn’t drive it. I changed all the plugs and coils and then a vacuum leak which was present enough to cause the misfires to come back. Now I just have a cat code and drive it everyday to work

I trust 99% of what Scotty says, but I’ve owned 2 Matrix XRS with the 2zz engine abs they were amazing.
Why 2? Did one break down....
One must of broke down
Two for one sale? 😉
Next video: i was wrong with this engine.
I owned Two at separate times, not two at the same time..Jesus I’m sad for this generation. Common sense isn’t so common anymore
I bought an 02 celica for my first car about a month ago with the 1zz engine and it’s been a dream to drive and after I put in a new radio with apple car play the thing is just as nice as my dads 2020 crv
The 1.8 140hp engine is terrible major issues with oil consumption.
The 1.8 190hp vvt li engine with the Yamaha head is awesome.
Real life says that 2zz is trash with x problems, while 1zz is bulletproof.
I imagine the Yamaha engines get worn out quickly because of the people who race them.
@@allentoyokawa9068 Nah the oil pumps are shithouse and so is the 6spd mated to them
@@ket_wav1013 The engines are strong as long as you don't over rev them.
GT 1ZZ engine is weak, drives like a sedan.
"911, whats your emergency?"
Caller: "I got a Yamaha engine in my Toyota."
Dispatcher: " Yamaha ha ha ha ha ha.!"
And a Jacko Transaction
R&T mag has a new article on jacked pink slips. Classic buyer beware.
its a Piano engine not a car engine.
🤣
2zz felt crazy when it switched, we put the car on a dyno and the power was 30 hp higher and jumped vertically on the graph
A couple of videos back you were saying how good the XRS Corolla was. The XRS also has the 2ZZ-GE engine. Only the cylinder head was designed by Yamaha.
Exactly that mate! scotty has me confused!
Hey Scotty, I got an 03 Pontiac Vibe/Matrix with a 2-ZZ and 6 speed, Original engine 299385 not so easy miles, no ticks, smoke or anything. Could full me but seems like a solid motor to me
Or, keep on with the 7th Gen 2zzge Celica hate, so we can keep buying them dirt cheap - maybe they will go up in price when storm has passed?
I've never been a fan of Toyota or Asian cars in general but man, we can only dream of getting such quality & reliability in a car built here. So sad the American manufacturing became synonymous with problems when originally it was the standard for the whole world
I saw a 2011 Equinox tonight with exhaust noise and just generally falling apart. Meanwhile 2011 Toyota's are still like brand new.
"...and the hub caps are gone" Scotty, you should have follow that up with the same thing you said about the rust. "Well that's Chicago for ya"
Michigan tops Chicago for rust. We have more cheap salt.
Nah people race with the 1zz and 2zz. Avoid the 1zz cause of its burns oil like crazy.
My 2zz is currently at 200k no issues.
Avoid 2zz because its trash like scotty said, 1zz is one of the best engines from toyota.
A 2003 Pontiac vibe and an 01 Chevy prism with the legendary Toyota 1.8 ZZ engine The motors are tough as nails they last forever.
With the 2zz it's an easy fix just get a 1zz oil pan and put it on the 2zz and if you can, get a better aftermarket oil pump
2zz-ge entered the room
I have a 2000 celica a truck and a sedan. The most reliable one is my celica . Those cars are great
Not saying he's wrong but the gts (6spd) isn't as bad as he makes it out to be, as long as the oil pump and lift bolts are taken care of its a very reliable and powerful 4 cylinder I have over 300,000 kms and still get 550km to a tank
My 83 went 325K before the accident, change oil every 3K, and clutch for some reason every 80K... great car!
You don't blow up a 2zz by revbanging it though. Missing a shift works just a well in 1zz as 2zz.

When there is literally 0 difference what car it is in
Scotty they also used that 2zz Yamaha in the Lotus Elise in the early 2000's aswell.
2zz is solid engine mate keep the car! Scotty says how good is xrs engine which is exactly the same engine! Scotty is confused!
Those 2zz engine wasn't bad. Most people blow them up from overrev .If your constantly going past 7k,you will lose oil..Honda does the samething
the 2zzge is one of the most reliable 4cyl engine with many examples exceeding 300k miles without repairs or problems and it is impressive for an engine that lives above 8,000 rpm!
Similar to the JZ (2jz,1jz) series engines
my 01 GT 1zz is driven for more than +345k miles on factory engine and transmission and still driving it.
The opposite was in effect for the 2002 Solara, 4 cylinder was junk, the V6 was a gem.
The 00-02/03 1ZZ are well known to have huge oil burn issues due to piston ring problems. It wasn't solved until the 04-06 models. The 2ZZ is a great engine but needs a few mods like the oil cooler and a few others.
One thing he did miss that the 1zz had a bad oil burning problem from factory I had an 02 and 03 and both had same issue but I still loved the car
My chevy malibu maxx has 378,000 miles on original engine and transmission the only needs a coolant temp sensor.
Nothing excites Scotty more than a high mileage Toyota
My 1zz-fe was very poorly maintained when I got it a month after driving my 01 celica trd it got a knock currently sending it to a shop to get completely rebuilt but it is the best engine
I have this very same car, its dependable as all can be, never any issues. Definitely not a quick ride however you have piece of mind.....
Got Mine today just cause I needed a ride for work and I love it
My Celica with the 2zz, 6 speed manual, is still going hard with 370,000kms on the clock. Oil starvation is only a concern if you drive it hard on the track.
The 1zzfe engines from 1999 - 2003 had issues with oil consumption due to piston issues, certainly in the UK at least.
I love my 2zzge celica gets, it's got almost 200k and I've beaten the snot out of it since I bought it
Hey Scotty your passenger back tire is a little low on your Celica LOL
My buddy had a Gt auto it didn't go anywhere very fast very dependable tho. The 2zz was the Gt-s only if I'm not mistaken
After watching a few of Scotty's videos, I think I'll get a bicycle
Those electric bikes he reviewed seemed pretty nifty.

I could sure use some advice about my 2UZ-fe 4.7 V8 2000 tundra SR5 2wd 265,000 miles....
Personally, I prefer the engines with the screw & locknut type of tappet adjustments... Like the older engines had...No special shims to try to find, no hassles with valve adjustments.
That 3 spoke steering wheel is beautiful, I wish I had one for my 97 Celica.
Most of the problems with the 2zz are user error. I've had mine since 110k, original engine, I'm near 300k. I'll make it.
I’d also check cabin air filter to ensure good air flow
