I was always told that you can never fish too close in for tench, so always fish off my rod top.

I wouldn't disagree and on any new water I would normally opt for fishing close if conditions suited that approach. I started fishing the far corner on this pond at the suggestion of another angler when I first fished there. And that approach has been very successful in the past. But Friday's lack of bites, and the other angler's success close in, caused me to try something else. Always willing to learn!

I've never known a tench to be that lethargic Bob,is the water OK?.thanks for the video.

Nor have I. The fish looked OK physically, as you can see from the video, and I think it was probably just the water temperature. There were algae blooms on the main lake but not on the small pond.

Low oxygen in the water I expect

Quite likely. It’s a relatively small volume of water that’s sheltered from the wind, so little opportunity to be oxygenated by water movement. I was told that the cutting down of the surrounding reeds etc. was recommended by the EA to aid oxygenation by better exposing the surface to wind.

With all the vegetation having been heavily cut, it makes one wonder if anglers actually manage these fisheries. Why can't they be more sympathetic with the surrounds?

It's managed by the local parish council and to be fair to them they've done a first class job of improving the main lake, with gravelled fishing stations on the banks and none of those awful platforms found on many commercials. The ponds are actually stock ponds and I believe they were set up under the guidance of the EA, who actually organised fish stocking in the past. Talking to one of the chaps earlier in the year he told me that he believed that the EA had recommended the reduction in the surrounding vegetation in order to expose the ponds more to the wind. This was because they feared lack of oxygenation without some water movement and thought that by exposing the pond surface more to the wind it would help matters. My experience has sort of confirmed the problem, with another comment suggesting that the lethargic nature of the tench was probably down to low oxygen levels. I'm not sure, however, that the surface is any more exposed to the wind judging from my experience on Friday.

@BobGoesFishing thank Bob, that's interesting. Like yourself, I'd rather catch tench, than carp. And on the float 😊
