With some of its longest running titles ending, what does the future look like for Weekly Shonen Jump? Axel returns to give us the rundown. ----- / axelablaze_pac bsky.app/profi...
Just because it keeps getting brought up, yes, I mispronounced Kagurabachi. I realized I mispronounced it and kept saying it that way to be consistent rather than flip flop during the video. 😂 I will say it right going forward. Lol
He was definitely my inspiration. It's tough to balance things out though and I know he had all kinds of people making comments about what he should have done or not done. I'm happy to provide in his stead!
What makes this even sadder is that the runaway joke of Hunter × Hunter being in hiatus doesn't have a proper conclusion when the series returns in 2021 or 23
Fantastic video, solid analysis, and I'm really glad you focused specifically on WSJ and not SJ+ or other 'Jump' series Small thing: the 'ch' in Kagurabachi isn't pronounced like 'k' but like 'ch', thought you should know
Thank you! Like I said in the video, I think those deserve their own focus since they are entirely different beasts. And yeah... I wanted to say Kagurabachi right, mispronounced it the first time, and was like... crap. Had to keep saying it that way for consistency at that point.
Yup, really rooting for it. It's great, and IMO it shows a fantastic understanding of paneling and story-telling from the author, unlike some other newbies who have a clearly stilted flow. You couldn't tell it's a debut work if you didn't know.
Watching this made me realize just how much series are currently running. I really wanna know how Jump knows what series to cut at this time considering the new Editor.
It's a combination of things. If a manga has started selling volumes, sales are typically king. Past that, there's reader surveys, online view counts, and social media buzz. Even then, there can be other factors affecting decisions. The ball is in Yu Saito's court now.
@@AxelablazeProductions It's true it only really dives in to the shonen jump side, and yes each studio has it's own unique approach to things but in my personal opinion there are enough similarities between the studios to give people a general understanding of the industry.
Glad that you’re back. Been following you since 2021. But I also followed Ouji, Manga Crash, Trentin Art, ect. To get my Jump reviews and analysis (past and present), while I also started reviewing the magazine (not on TH-cam but on another forum), while also sharing my thoughts with Crash. But looking at the magazine, is stack. And it is much more difficult, as there has been a trend back in 2004 where every 4 years, we get 4+ new series from that year that become hits or cult classics. So it will be much harder to say goodbye to any of the current 2024 titles. But I’m glad you’re back and what a great video to make a return. Edit: Also, I have a good prediction for a lot of the series that MYF has about 18 chapters left and will conclude at volume 30. UU is about 39-40 chapters wrapping at volume 30. M&R has a long time as well as SD. TES could be in the same range as Neuro or AC, but I am uncertain due to how much is left in Tokiyuki’s story. WW has in my opinion 2 years left. BB is debatable cause it could end at Chinatsu’s graduation (which is about 5 volumes away) or it can continue throughout college. Akane I assumed it was going to be 20, but I could be wrong (and I want to be wrong). As for KB, Nue and Kagurabachi, they are undecided. But as for the 2024 titles here is a quick lightning round. Chojo is the funniest gag title (for me) in a long time. Astro Royale is popular in Japan (from what I am seeing), and has a good amount of fans from my forum. But there is this part of me that, Wakui’s trying to correct how he opened the story, and is somewhat forcing an emotion and ideas than letting them feel natural. Murakami has no hope. Kiyoshi is really funny and has gotten a Twitter account along with Hima (but should hopefully leave soon due to what has happened with Twitter lately). Great characters and humor (along with art), but I hope it picks up cause of that exam arc taking to long. Hima is fun, albeit I wished it didn’t go into the Harem route and just stuck with a love triangle. Ichi is fun and I am glad that Usazaki has returned after 4 years. Shinobi is fun and it is on par with Ichi in terms of impact and popularity. And HakuTaku, despite it being another axe, I still think it is good and not the worst we have seen (though despite the controversy regarding that college girl who scammed Seo in their introduction). And those are my thoughts on who has how much time left and what I think about this years titles in the magazine.
Thank you for sticking around and for your thoughts here. I like the optimism toward volume numbers for Yozakura and UU, but we don't always get nice whole numbers for manga when they end (Demon Slayer 23, Dr Stone 27, Assassination Classroom 21, Toriko 43, etc). I certainly hope we can get to 30 for both series but Jump editorial has some very tough decisions ahead. Maybe they'll get creative and move things around. We'll see in a few weeks.
Glad to see someone continuing the tradition! It’s always so nice to see videos like these, especially from others who read the full magazine. My analysis for the year: **One Piece and Hunter x Hunter**- Stable, They’ll take breaks as needed. Elbaph looks to be a fun time! I’m hoping we get to the Dark Continent by the end of the 30 reported chapters. **Mission: Yozakura Family and Undead Unluck**- These should both end by Early 2025. I’m so glad to see the twins doing important things; I love those little rascals.😁 I’m hoping we can get a good twist or two before UU ends- and maybe a happy ending with Andy and Fuuko kissing? **Me and Roboco and Witch Watch**- Stable gag series as always. I’m hoping we can get some more “genre” arcs in Roboco. The action arcs and fishing arc from last year were stellar. For WW, maybe more romance outside of the main two couples. **Sakamoto Days and Kagurabachi**- The premier “Jump battle shonen” outside of One Piece. I’ve absolutely adored recent fights in Sakamoto; this new bow guy on X’s team is an AWESOME addition. Kagurabachi continues to gain in quality with every passing chapter. Once we get a few more notable characters, I’d love to see how this series does a tournament arc. **The Elusive Samurai, Blue Box, and Akane-banashi**- Happy to see TES branching out and giving Tokiyuki the lead role; I love Akiie’s death, though- beautiful. And Sadamune coming up??? I haven’t read-up on the history, but I can’t imagine we have too much left, right? For BB, yeah, I think I might love these other two romances more than Taiki and Chinatsu; they’re so cute.😭 Kyo and Ayame BETTER get together by next year’s end. AB continues to get better and better; this recent twist is truly shocking. I mean, what?! Easily the best-written Jump series in drama right now. **Ichi the Witch**- Yeah, this is a future pillar of Jump. The superb comedic timing, magnificent art, dense world-building, great character designs, unique and detailed power system- need I go on? I have never read a first chapter of a new series in Jump that immediately took my heart like Ichi the Witch. If Kagurabachi is the new Bleach/JJK, then Ichi the Witch is the new Naruto/My Hero Academia. **Kill Blue, Nue’s Exorcist, and SPPC**- With how many great new series we’re getting, I could see all of these series ending next year. Kill Blue is good but not great- kind of just a generic, well-drawn action series. Nue’s is so dull most of the time, but it does have great art at times. I still am not entirely sure why Japanese fans like it, but I’m happy to see the author succeed. SPPC is *probably* a mainstay for a bit, mostly due to its experienced author. I could see it being a middle-length gag series like Magu-chan or Agravity Boys. **Astro Royale and Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi**- The two upcoming action series of similar quality. AR will likely run for longer than necessary, mostly due to it having the TR author. It’s an okay series but hasn’t had its “Zabuza” moment yet. On the other hand, I think Kiyoshi is good but needs something *else* to really put it over-the-top. Maybe a better female character? An intense, emotional battle? **Hima-Ten! and Shinobi Undercover**- Lots of potential here! I adore HT so far and would love to see it continue. The “rom-com” and “ecchi” niches have been absent in Jump; I think it feels both admirably. SU has good-enough action, but I’m just not sure it has a place in the current magazine. Astro, Kiyoshi, Kill Blue, Nue’s, and Ichi all are of higher quality and were more immediately popular when they began. **Yokai Buster Murakami and Hakutaku**- As you said, they’re axe fodder. I like the “dragon” yokai in YBM and the premise of H, but that’s about it.
Thank you for the insightful reply! I think we see eye to eye almost the entire way through the roster. It feels great to have so many series running at the same time, but it's also painful to see newer series end too soon before they can fully realize their potential. We're at an impasse coming up and sales are really going to be a deciding factor what stays and what goes.
Everything you said, I would agree on, and I would have said the same thing on the forum I use to give my weekly chapter reviews. But to answer some things that you don’t know, Nue is popular enough where it got cafe collaborations. There is some popularity for Shinobi, but whether it matches the response in Japan is a different take. Both Hima and Kiyoshi (especially the latter) seem to be doing well on Shoseki so that is good. And I think you might be right regarding Astro Royale where I think it needs a serious fight where it is emotionally driven. Cause the problem is that there is no weight that can help me get invested and how there is some writing choices where I felt it was forced than natural. But I would also say that with WW some romance with some characters instead of the main one for now due to the circumstances which I won’t say due to spoilers for some which I want to be polite on that when their anime’s get there. But yeah, this is one solid lineup. And 2024 isn’t slowing down with how great the series we are getting.
The anime studio wasn't the problem so much as it was the direction. David Pro does fantastic work and everything that wasn't recap was good. And yeah. It could have been better on a different platform but it wouldn't have been as bad on Hulu if they just advertised for it.
Yeah the Disney + release in France was also dirty. The anime hasn't boosted the sales because nobody has seen it. Season 1 was really good and I heard the following arcs are insane, I might read the manga in 2025 (maybe to "celebrate" its conclusion)
This was a great video, I've been meaning to watch a video that goes over the state of jump for the year and I'm glad I watched this one! I subscribed!
Really like your content! I’d love to see your personal takes on the individual manga and stories in WSJ as well as getting a similar overview of Jump Square manga, as they always seem safe to me.
I'm going to try and get something out eventually with actually discussing my thoughts on each series, but we'll see where the rest of the year takes me. Jump SQ could be an interesting topic as well, so I'll consider it!
Great video, reminded me of SEW’s videos but in your own style. As for the content itself I think it’s very realistic in terms of predictions based on the data provided. Feels great to watch a WSJ video made by someone that actually knows what they’re talking about!
I appreciate how much effort clearly went into making a video like this, especially when (due to the constantly changing state of the magazine) it will almost immediately become outdated lol. Great Work!
@@Donnel4 Thank you and so true with the outdating nature. Lol. At the very least, I'm still good for a few more months! My first axing prediction was technically correct, so now it all comes down to February/March to reveal if I was off base or not
I'm glad to see you back and was wondering if you were ever gonna come back, but I'm happy to see ya here. Also, I really did like Cipher Academy and wish it continued, but understand why it got axed and feels so good to see where Udul, Akane Banashi, Sakamoto Days, Ichi the Witch, Ruri Dragon, and Mission: Yozakura Family is rn especially since 2 of them are wrapping up and love Undead Unluck so much wish the anime made more waves but it's supposed to continue next year though.
Glad to be back. The last few years have had their ups and downs (mostly ups thankfully) but it's hard to commit and get back into a habit. The spark never died though and I'm working on creating a rhythym again.
I can see Yozakura getting a complete anime adaptation. While yes, the manga didn’t get a proper boost in sales, the anime was still received well in JP and had a lot of merch sales and collaborations (esp. Sanrio). It also has a blue stage at Jump Festa where even the 2nd OP performers will be participating… Granted, I may be showing my bias because I love both the manga and anime, I just wouldn’t count out a S3.. Also, I agree with it ending by Q1 of 2025… Great video by the way! Ichi Supremacy!!
@@Quincy25 Thank you for the comment and I'm glad you enjoyed! I don't disagree with you. A third season IS possible, but Shueisha is weird about its anime adaptations. While you get full adaptations of series like MHA and Dr Stone or even Demon Slayer with its upcoming movies, you also get adaptations like Haikyu, We Never Learn, and Promised Neverland. Time will tell.
@@AxelablazeProductions I completely get it! Not sure if I should be mad at Shueisha or Jump Editorial, since I don’t like how they barely promoted the manga in the magazine (despite its multiple color pages)
Happy to have you back and I agree with probably all of your points. I really hope Kiyoshi is able to somehow pull out a win and survive and become a regular and I have no doubt in my mind about Ichi for obvious reasons. Would be nice if Astro Royale keeps existing also. The music you used was really cool, I’ll have to ask you about that one of these days & I was not prepared for the way you pronounce Kagurabachi lmao
@@yatoplayz Glad to be back. The music was all from Humble Bundle. I bought one of their royalty free music bundles last week before it went away. A new bundle like that pops up every few months typically.
18:00 One thing that I think gives "Hima-Ten" a bit more of a cushion is that at its core its a different type of romance manga than "Blue Box". BB is a romantic sports drama while HT is a light and breezy rom-com. The two series play in largely different spaces and can complement rather than compete. While Jump's money-makers have always been Battle Shonen series ever since "Dragon Ball" mastered the formula, the magazine does seem to like to round out its roster with series from different genres. HT has a chance to lock down a roster spot as Jump's rom-com. The potential monkey wrench in the works here is "Syd Craft: Love Is A Mystery" from Taishi Tsutsui of "We Never Learn" fame. I wasn't overly impressed with the first chapter, but he is the proven commodity if comes down to a split decision. If Hima-Ten can outlive Syd Craft, however, its long-term survival odds go up considerably in my (dubiously valuable) opinion.
Blue Box is the romance with the set love interest and the male MC gets the girl. Hima-Ten is the harem where it's a will he/won't he get with the main girl or childhood friend. And Syd Craft is the several options harem. I absolutely agree that they can be complimentary. We'll just see whether or not they parasitize each other instead. And on the Syd Craft front, I'm hearing speculation that the Japanese reception was very lukewarm.
The gap between manga and anime released for Jump is so wide these days that most of their successful animes that are still airing are for mangas which already ended. Haikyuu Demon Slayer, Dr.Stone and Chainsaw Man part 1 being the most extreme examples and My Hero and JJK joining the list too.
Doing my best to stay active. Just need to find a better work/life/TH-cam balance so I don't burn myself out. But it means a lot to hear this, so thank you. 🙏
At 23:45 I just want to mention that right after Beelzebub was announced for Jump Ultimax and then canceled a few days later because of HxH coming back.
When you called One Piece and HxH "the 2 series from the 90's" not only did I feel ancient but its also crazy how we've had entire series that started in the 2020's end already and those two are still going for opposite reasons 😂
@AxelablazeProductions its mental 😂 Jojos and Baki are the two that I follow that just blows my mind how ancient they are. Its like these mangakas are imune to aging 😂
As a new watcher of your channel, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this video. You’re both factual and analytical so I found myself agreeing with you on multiple points. It’s only a shame that you couldn’t wait for the release of volume 1 of hima-ten and kiyoshi (and murakami but that shit is definitely dead). Would have liked to see your perspective, as I’m rather conflicted on their placement up until now (especially kiyoshi). Also o still didn’t have time to catch up on the 3 newbies, so other than ichi the witch, would suggest me trying another one?
@@ralpheid905 I originally started working on this script back when JJK was still in its 5 chapter ending phase, but new info kept coming out and I kept revising my script as a result. I wanted to put a video out while I could still try and predict the next axing round. At least based on day 1 of Shoseki sales, it's not looking great for Hima-Ten and Kiyoshi, but we'll see in a few days just what the abstract numbers actually mean. Because of Jump Festa, I still think they're safe, but it's not looking great based on previous series debuting in similar positions. While I think Shinobi Undercover and Hakutaku are fine, I do think they're axebait. Even with Shinobi getging a color page this week. If you're okay reading knowing that they'll be gone, go for the read anyway.
@@AxelablazeProductions yeah, i understand your point tbh. You wanted to finally finish and release the video, fully knowing that info will constantly change either case. Thanks for the response. And I think I will settle to read ichi the witch.
As an avid reader for Cipher academy , it's so sad to see the manga get axed. Cause the art design , and characters are very good . But it kinda hard to expand by its own story, also i can see more people would not like it as a few of games are heavily related to japanese consonants and syllables which difficult to understand to non-japanese.
The art and characters were definitely fun but those puzzles were a problem. The average person isn't going to be able to solve one on the fly, so I feel like most people would just flip the page and have the characters solve it for them. It still had a decent run despite the challenges it faced.
I can't speak much on Mission: Yozakura Family or Undead Unluck given I haven't read them, but knowing that those two are within their final chapters, I think the two of them are primed to end within the year, if not very early next year. Assuming we get new batches at similar times to this past year, I could also see any number of series consisting of Astro Royale, Nue's Exorcist, Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi, Kill Blue, Yokai Buster Murakami, Shinobi Undercover, Hakutaku, and an early 2025 axe-bait ending by July. I don't see it being all of these, if only because this is a pretty excessive amount of manga to end in just the first half of the year, but I do think all of these will be over by the end of 2025. Nue's and Kill Blue feel like they're paving the way for a decently early final arc. Murakami also feels like it's at the end of an intentionally shortened run, and the rest of them all have the potential to follow suit. If I had to get specific, my current prediction is that we'll get a two series batch in time for December, and lose Murakami and some mix of Kiyoshi and the two longer running series (again, I'm not caught up with either Yozakura or UU, so I don't know how long either of them really have left). This could be a three series batch, in which case it would be either Yozakura or UU, and both Murakami and Kiyoshi. Then, come February, Hakutaku will get U19'd, and potentially Shinobi, and one of Kiyoshi, Yozakura, or UU, depending on what gets axed for the December batch (potentially even multiple of these if Shinobi doesn't get axed here). This is all coming from someone who isn't super familiar with the industry, and has only been consistently reading manga weekly since mid-2023-ish, so I could be getting stuff completely wrong or missing something obvious, but I feel pretty good about my predictions.
@@jekfrumstotferm9830 No, no. You've got a good grasp of things. To be fair, there's not a lot somebody could get wrong given how sales are pretty clear cut. And I appreciate the time you tool to write all this out. The only other possibility other than an ax would be moving a series or two out of the magazine. Very low possibility but still an option if they don't want to cut something promising.
I think the upcoming batches might be Mid November Murakami ends and 1 maybe 2 series starts February batch Kiyoshi, Himaten Hakutaku and maybe Yozakura if not earlier I definitely see a batch of 4 being possible next year and I honestly kinda hope it will be the case.
Excellent video. Came out great. I can say most of the predictions seem solid. Let's hope nothing major happens after uploading to ruin it lol. tl;dr at the bottom The big thing I'd disagree with is I don't think Nue is in as much trouble as suggested. Especially with a lot of other series ending & all the newbies in the magazine now too. Much like Yozakura, even without the biggest sales it has enough buffer to keep it going. Even more so if we are going to see a more U19 approach with the new series. That said, you bring up a valid point that anime adaptations are coming out much later for the magazine. Which is the only way for it to boost sales at this point. But while there are examples of series getting the axe even after a year, like P6 or Cipher Academy, they are more of an exception than a rule. Feel like the magazine will always have some kind of exorcist series & not sure Kiyoshi can be that quite yet. Speaking of which, it'll be awkward if Hima-ten and Kiyoshi can't sell well in that stacked month & end up like MMA & Cipher. Haven't even started Hima ten yet myself in part for that reason. That and it seems a lot like like Nisekoi & Bokuben but didn't captivate me as much. The other thing with these series, when compared to Ichi, neither really fill a niche that needs filling. I know you said your descriptions were oversimplified, but they aren't wrong lol. So of the new series these, Murakami, & Hakutaku are in the most danger for sure. Though speaking of Ichi, I wouldn't have gone as hard on the Nue critique if you weren't a little more lenient of this one. Cause I get you can only do analysis based on the numbers and patterns we've seen. In that sense you aren't wrong. But the fact is we haven't seen Ichi numbers yet and it has about as many color pages as what we've seen of the other newbies. The pedigree is huge and of all the 2024 debuts this has the highest survival chance for many reasons (including the niche I mentioned above). However, what we have seen, as you yourself mentioned in the video, is veterans not selling as high as expected. Astro Royale has decent numbers selling on par with UU post anime, but not quite TR. Kill Blue is fine for now but not quite at Kuroko levels. WW (unless I'm forgetting something) is the best selling gag of the magazine (yeah it has some action & romance but it does more gags) atm, yet based on the few sales I just pulled up it's not quite Sket Dance level (those numbers may have been post anime idk). My point is it's great to be optimistic but if Ichi follows a similar pattern it may end sometime next year or face a position of being the most likely to leave if something really special drops next year. Finally, I wanted to bring up some things that could have been added. First, I was very curious how Kagurabachi numerically compared to the early days of the heavy hitters. Cause it does seem to be off to a much stronger start than anything else in the magazine afaik. But is it enough to become a MHA or JJK when the inevitable anime drops. At one point I thought Sakamoto may get close but I don't think it'll be quite at that level now. Akane I feel will always be a strong niche series. At most I can see them reaching Dr Stone level popularity (as in strong supporting series for the magazine). So outside the survival of Ichi & maybe Kiyoshi, Kagurabachi seems to only candidate until something new comes around to be that big pillar alongside One Piece (& I guess HxH now). Second, I think making predictions on what types of new series or mangaka will return could be fun thing to add. Granted it's more in the realm of wild speculation compared to what's presented here. But I do think there's some degree of pattern based behavior. Like a new sports series is likely and maybe mangaka who came close to success will return, like Mapollo 3 with Tsubame being done. However I will say with a new chief editor this is the hardest one to get right. Last, maybe a small section of you'd like to see for the magazine. It's not quite as objective as what you are trying to put out but it does give a personal touch to the whole thing. tl;dr congrats on being back here's your partyjams essay comment as a gift lol. Despite everything I said, this video is highly accurate. But I think Nue will be just fine. The more in danger series are Kiyoshi, Hima ten, Murakami, and Hakutaku. With them, other series ending, and more axe bait on the way, Nue just has to make to an anime (hopefully). Frankly, I'd say Ichi is in more danger as the veteran series performance has been kinda meh. But it's outliving all these other 2024 ones. I did kinda want to see how Kagurabachi compared to the recently ended big shots, some predictions for future series, and even what you yourself wanted from the magazine in the future. Though I understand that all of this starts going out of scope of the original vision of the video.
Lol. I was eagerly waiting for this essay comment, so thank you for that and the congrats. I agree that I went heavy on the doom and gloom with Nue. Realistically speaking, no. It's not in any danger yet, but we can't be complacent with its sales. Just because Yozakura and UU lasted as long as they did with similar sales doesn't mean Nue can't be axed in the current lineup. That said it has a number of newer series acting as buffers for the ax unless we randomly get some SUPER batch of newbies in 2025. I'm hoping we see decent sales for Hima-Ten and Kiyoshi but the odds really are stacked against them. I do think they'll be spared before Jump Festa but they could easily be axed a few months into 2025 if the sales are low. My Ichi the Witch bias is definitely strong, I won't lie. The early excitement is there, but until the sales reflect that level of excitement, you're right that veterans in general are underperforming. Still going to be openly optimistic in the meantime. I think making a new video to compare sales for Kagurabachi and the other series would be cool to do. While I covered anime production comparisons, sales would have been nice to touch on too. I more so kept the Kagurabachi discussion short because its spot in the magazine is unquestionable. A predictions/wants for Jump is a good idea too. I stayed away from that mostly to focus on thr present and near future of the titles we already have. But if I did this, I would want to put in some more research than just giving surface level wishes/predictions. All of this is great food for thought though, so I appreciate you taking your time to watch and comment!
Since this video was made just before the first volumes of the Murakami batch came out, I'll give a slight update. Murakami is as dead on Arrival as can be. It is already Unranked as of day 3 of shoseki and it will likely sell less than 2k. It will most likely be axed with the December batch. I'll combine the other two as they are following very similair sales right now. They debut at the high 20s and have fallen out of the top 100 with day 3, even behind Chojo now. But there is a good point, being that both series are not stocked at all stores. It seems that they will be getting stocked for day 4 to 6, so starting today. We should see some sort of bump up with tomorrows shoseki. Even if we don't, it is clear both series are going for atleast a two batch run, ending at the earliest with the new batch in 2025 if they don't improve. As you already said Hakutaku will go with the first batch of 2025 with the remaining flop of the Murakami batch and maybe Shinobi if it completely flops, but that seems to be a likely two batch run aswell.
@@Dingo536 Thank you for that. I actually touch on the Shoseki numbers in the video coming out today (11/4). Not that I touch upon the short stocking, but still not the greatest news hearing where they debuted given the track record of series debuting below 15-ish. They'll still most likely get through this round and be up for an ax in a few months
I'm wondering what will happen to Wild Strawberry. I really love the art, and am willing to wait for the story to build but shonen jump doesnt always let that happen.
@@magicfrae It's part of Jump+, so it does get SOME leeway. It hasn't made too big of a splash in sales, but I'm hoping it gets to keep fleshing out the story too
Yozakura literally about to finish Vol 28 and it is going into Vol 29 so it isn't going to end this year. Also you never know...A S3 could be there as well. All depends on how long S2 and how far they will go this time. Also Yozakura did get a small boost during the beginning of the anime's run. It was small but it still counts as a backlog boost
@@RedDragonEmperorAsh With the recent MHA news about getting 60 pages' worth of new stuff, it's possible that Yozakura could get a similar treatment. But yes, there's the possibility that it goes into next year. That's why I didn't go 100% on that.
I really hope Kiyoshi survives because it's really one of the few action series that's goofy and isn't extremely dark with its themes that's running as of now. I say this as a JJK and KB fan too, I'd just like to see more contrast personally speaking. If it doesn't then aw well, I still have Ichi the Witch and I've been loving that series
@@waffleboi7487 I enjoy Kiyoshi for the same reason. It has those humorous moments to offset the seriousness. When it's just action, action, action and a dark, moody tone all the time, it can be pretty heavy to keep reading through. If nothing else, we do have Ichi like you said
I've also noticed a shift in the community and the recent rise of shojo anime. I think the stereotypical Shonen era has ended, people want something new.
I agree that there's a shift, but I don't know about a shojo anime "rise." We get like one decent shojo anime per season and then a bunch of series people confuse for Shojo (Skip and Loafer, Apothecary Diaries, etc)
@@AxelablazeProductions Kiyoshi has a great artstyle and I think it has a fun roster of characters, and the battles are fairly interesting without getting over-complicated. If it can manage to stick around, I think it could become something pretty great. Anyways, great video, glad I found this in my recommended, and you've got a new sub!
Who are you? Why am I subbed to you? How would you know the answer to the second question? No one knows! Wait a second, I kinda remember that Dolphin Avatar of yours. Although I don't remember any videos from you!
I think Hima-Ten is less "Blue Box without the sports" and more "Nisekoi for the Reiwa Era". It's a classic Jump shonen harem but it seems to speed up progress and do away with the most frustrating and annoying romcom tropes.
I was initially going to describe it like Nisekoi, but the main reason I didn't was to compare it to something more recent (thus Blue Box). It absolutely is more like Nisekoi, but you've got a lot of modern readers that might not have read a shonen rom com that ended 8 years ago.
@@AxelablazeProductions fair, but I think the comparison with Blue Box is a bit weird because beyond "they're both romcoms" they really don't have much in common at all. One of the most unique things about Blue Box was that even though its PoV character is a boy it has a remarkably shojo-esque quality - both art-wise and in terms of the way the romance is developed. Instead of being focused on the boy being spoiled for choice and various wacky/ecchi hijinks, it's all about subtle feelings and characters displaying emotional maturity. It's quite unique in the WSJ landscape as far as romances go. While Hima-Ten really feels like a modern take on the Nisekoi/Bokuben formula in that it keeps all the key elements (and even sort of imitates their artstyle), though it spins them slightly differently. This week we also had the new mystery/romance manga Syd which being by the same author of BokuBen is obviously trying to vie for that niche as well and I'd say has drastically reduced Hima-Ten's hopes to stay on the roster (unless it bombs catastrophically, which sometimes happens to veterans too I guess).
I need to catch up on it I've actually been liking it, and I have yet to read Tokyo Revengers. I don't think it's nearly as bad as people are making it out to be
@@murderman8578 I'm personally not seeing anything about a split cour announcement. I see the original season one announcement and then season two's from October 6th
I wish I could like Ichi the witch but it lacks something, I can't get into the art. It reminds me a lot of Magi's but it lacks some sort of extra spice.
Different brush strokes for different folks. Lol. I'm a big fan of the art but I'm also already a bg fan of Usazaki and Nishi separately let alone together

Gil ended November 12th, 2023. Close but no cigar. I actually had a cut line toward the end (due to scuffed audio) where I was going to say Gill and Ichinose Family ended before Jump Festa last year.
@@tomo8940 It's honestly pretty funny just how successful it became after the internet joked around with it for two chapters. And several moments have become memes themselves. Pretty great
@@AxelablazeProductionsDamn is that how you pronounce Kagurabachi? I always pronounced it as "bah-chee" I liked the video though btw. My favourites are Astro Royale and Kiyoshi outside of Kagurabachi and One Piece.
@Charlestouchdown No, no. You've got it right for Kgurabachi. I mispoke and then committed to the bit to be consistent. I also enjoy Astro Royale and Kiyoshi. I think they've only gotten better as time has gone on.
@@Charlestouchdown It was more of a pain just because I had to learn new video editing software on the fly over the weekend and I wasn't as efficient as I could have been. But I'm glad that my efforts paid off.
Astro Royale was a real disappointment for me, personally. I only got about five or six chapters in, but I really don't care for the art or character writing. The inclusion of a pretty overt transphobic stereotype for a bit villain didn't help, either. My feeling is that they're keeping it around purely so they don't waste their investment into reeling Wakui in, a lot like how Samurai 8 long, long outlived the time it should have gotten cancelled purely off of Kishimoto's brand recognition. I know it's a little harsh, but I hope Astro Royale bites the dust to make room for some newer series. I'm hopeful MaMaYuYu's mangaka learns from what went wrong (and what I personally feel went right) in their first series and comes back with something good.
@@Yggdraseed I'm also hoping we see Hayashi come back soon. I was a big MaMaYuYu fan myself but recognize it had its flaws. And totally understandable opinion on Astro Royale. It had a rough first volume and the art is a downgrade from Tokyo Revengers depending on the chapter. We'll see how long it stays depending on sales and the new editor-in-chief.
I think Astro started as a case of “trying to bend to the typical shounen style” because post like chapter 9ish it’s been a lot closer to Wakui’s usual style of writing. The early chapters (to me at least) feel like editor meddling.
I think Nue is the sleeper of the recent new series,it just seems to have the right things to succeed since it could grab some of the jjk fans now that its ended and it's following the formula of fighting supernatural creatures like Demon Slayer JJK chainsaw man and kaiju no 8. I would not be surprised if it goes for at least 5 years min 10-year max. but that's just me but Ichi, the witch will do well.
Nue has only gotten better with time. The art especially has become impressive with the fights. So long as a bunch of crazy good new manga don't come to take its place, 5 years is definitely possible.
@@AxelablazeProductionsthe only problem with Nue’s is that is feels like a miss match for the magazines typical fan base. If it gets and anime and light novel fans find it it’ll be way bigger.

What makes this even sadder is that the runaway joke of Hunter × Hunter being in hiatus doesn't have a proper conclusion when the series returns in 2021 or 23
This is way better, he had way too much surface level thoughts on each series and did not give as much up to date news.
@@CalmTrickster03 Actually, it has. I think it was in one of those "Things I like" videos where the joke returns to finally being conclused.
Great that he stopped all he makes is terrible surface level content anyways
Fantastic video, solid analysis, and I'm really glad you focused specifically on WSJ and not SJ+ or other 'Jump' series
Small thing: the 'ch' in Kagurabachi isn't pronounced like 'k' but like 'ch', thought you should know
Thank you! Like I said in the video, I think those deserve their own focus since they are entirely different beasts.
And yeah... I wanted to say Kagurabachi right, mispronounced it the first time, and was like... crap. Had to keep saying it that way for consistency at that point.
Im praying for kiyoshi's survival because the art style and characters are so good and cute

Kiyoshi's first chapter made me think it could get axed quick, but it's grown on me.
Funny how it shares a name with a fictional Shonen Manga from Bakuman
This was super informative and well put together! Glad I stumbled upon this vid. I've been out of the loop of SJ for years.
@@TheComiKen Glad I could help you get back in the loop! We're in a very interesting place moving into 2025
Watching this made me realize just how much series are currently running. I really wanna know how Jump knows what series to cut at this time considering the new Editor.
It's a combination of things. If a manga has started selling volumes, sales are typically king. Past that, there's reader surveys, online view counts, and social media buzz. Even then, there can be other factors affecting decisions. The ball is in Yu Saito's court now.
there's always atleast 20 series running in the magazine. So you can guess how many will be cut and how many will be new. every axe season.
There is actually a previous shonen jump series called Bakuman that explains how the manga industry works pretty well.
@leventenagy6953 At least on the Shonen Jump side of things. Kodansha had its version called Hitman in WSM. Only it was also a rom com by Koji Seo
@@AxelablazeProductions I understand the sentiment. And we will see.
Glad to see someone continuing the tradition! It’s always so nice to see videos like these, especially from others who read the full magazine.
My analysis for the year:
**One Piece and Hunter x Hunter**- Stable, They’ll take breaks as needed.
Come on, Kiyoshiiiiii. Live!!!
LIIIIIIIIIIIVE!
Undead Unluck was done dirty; should've aired in USA on Crunchyroll + Netflix, and been made by different anime studio.

I actually just want to say well done for this video 👏🏿👏🏿
Very good video! Your predictions were interesting and I agree with many of them. Reading JUMP and make predictions is so funny.
Thanks! We'll see if I'm right or wrong in a few weeks here
As an avid reader for Cipher academy , it's so sad to see the manga get axed.
I think the upcoming batches might be
Mid November Murakami ends and 1 maybe 2 series starts
February batch
Kiyoshi, Himaten Hakutaku and maybe Yozakura if not earlier
I definitely see a batch of 4 being possible next year and I honestly kinda hope it will be the case.
Would not be surprised to get a batch of 4 at some point. Especially if Hima-Ten and Kiyoshi don't have the sales numbers
Excellent video. Came out great. I can say most of the predictions seem solid. Let's hope nothing major happens after uploading to ruin it lol. tl;dr at the bottom
The big thing I'd disagree with is I don't think Nue is in as much trouble as suggested.
Love the video, Hakutaku one of them ones though....
Yeah... always have one every now and then.
Tysm for this video
You're welcome!
12:58 Yokai Buster Murakami just recently got axed. I think you already knew that in your latest video tho
Yup! This video came out at the end of October before that happened

Gil ended November 12th, 2023. Close but no cigar. I actually had a cut line toward the end (due to scuffed audio) where I was going to say Gill and Ichinose Family ended before Jump Festa last year.
@@AxelablazeProductions oh, okay
i was hoping it would last longer in the magazine. But i guess it didn’t peak anyone’s interest.
I think it had some amazing art and a unique setting. The main problem was Gill himself and the ax memes were writing themselves.

@Charlestouchdown No, no. You've got it right for Kgurabachi. I mispoke and then committed to the bit to be consistent.
I also enjoy Astro Royale and Kiyoshi. I think they've only gotten better as time has gone on.
@@AxelablazeProductions I read you don't like editing... I didn't think it was half bad. Keep it up. 🤝

My Hero Academia's and Jujutsu Kaisen's endings were shit!
Looking back, I liked both endings but I do NOT like how JJK got to its ending. Too many plot threads abandoned
