    My friend Mr. Tango taught me to keep a small, clean 6 oz disposable water bottle in my bag. When I get ready to hang the bag, fill the bottle with water and cap it, to give the bag weight to throw. This makes a much better throw than rocks as it is usually heavier and fills the hand well.

    • @JeremiahStringer
      @JeremiahStringer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh that a great idea too! You can also cut the top off if you need a water scoop. I like the way you think!

    Nice! Another hack.... make a simple loop on the other end of your line and attach it to your bag. Your bag is now an anchor while you're throwing your line.

    Nice! Thanks so much for the video. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to fiddle trying to get the stick out! I think this is WAY better. Gotta try this method next time I’m in the backcountry.

      Another subscriber suggested trying an extra tent stake if you don't have 2 carabiners on you at the time. They said it is a lot easier to get out

    • @renaecummings8068
      @renaecummings8068 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve used an extra stake, it’s just that the loop around the stake gets so tight and if you’re hanging food for several people and the food bag is heavy, there is so much pressure on the stake it’s still hard to pull out. It’s usually a two man job, I pull the rope down and try to relieve the pressure on the cord and my husband try’s to pull the stake out. With an actual stick it’s even worse. I’m definitely giving the two carabiner method a go. 👍

    great tip, thanks!
    quick idea to add: while Amsteel (Dyneema) cordage isn't cheap, it has a *SUPER* silky texture (low friction) and it's a 12-strand constricting braid that can be very easily spliced (1/16" takes practice) for permanent end loops or even just tapered and passed back through itself to form thicker tapered end. i do so much hammock camping that i invested in spools of 1/16" and 7/64" Dyneema, and i haven't regretted it. my bear bag line is 30ft of 1/16" Lash-It with spliced loops at each end that allow me to do the same setup very easily. i'll usually use my tarp stakes bag as my throw (not as durable), or my slingshot ammo bags if i've brought it all. i've even just hooked my pocket knife's clip onto the fixed loops on my throw line and covered it with the stakes bag for a bit more protection.

    I have had my bag near the end of a hike be fairly light not want to slide up and down very easily. I know I could put some stuff in it to make it heavier. But to not have to mess with all that (and in case it gets hung up in the bark, tangled in branches, et cetera) I have a loop tied in the middle of my line that I hook my bag to. That way I have two lines hanging down, one of each side of the branch. That way if by bag goes up and won't come back down I can pull it back down.

    Throwing your wound up line is a very good way to tangle it. It's best to unwind it. So you stand under the limb while you pull as hard as you can to see if it will break? Am I the only one who thinks that is unwise? I have noticed many videos where people suggest a small knot with a loop. Depending on various factors, those can be nearly impossible to untie. Why not use a clove hitch? It's easy to make and will always come off.

      I use some line I bought from UGQ for every trip I go on. I have never come close to breaking it I don't think, but I don't have a good answer for your question to be honest. Only problem I've ran in to is when there is too much weight on the line it cuts in to the tree when you pull it up. Obviously that's bad for the tree, but it also creates a lot of friction on the cord so it could burn through itself or just get stuck. I think it would be a great question to dive deeper on

    I don't understand why this would be easier than just hoisting the bag up and then tie of the end of the rope to a branch or trunk? The method shown seems much more cumbersome in fact because you have to hoist the bag up and then let it down to lock against the carabiner. Then to get it down you have got to hoist it up again, unhook the carabine, untie the knot and then let the bag down. The normal method is just - hoist up and tie, untie and let down.
