@mmb1998 Resonance can't be judged on a recording. The wrong EQ settings or inappropriately set "gates" can totally destroy resonance, depth, color, etc. In a live room, poor acoustics could limit resonance.
My two cents... singing is not about hitting the notes perfectly. If it were it would be boring. The emotion behind the voice is what makes the song fly. A couple of wavery notes, which I don't think are there, who cares. She sang is beautifully.
@AtLastOnTheGround You are my new best friend. I have ALWAYS thought Ripley is WAY overrated and I found her performance in Next to Normal to be nothing special. Mazzie...always magic.
@pudgeuncle well I don´t think Alice Ripley is overrated as well as Marin Mazzie! Both are hard working women who really worked on their voices and their acting! And they did good work! At least this is my opinion! :-)
Oh, no, I'm not saying she was bad, I love this version, I was just saying that the last line was the only thing I thought could've been better. Marin Mazzie is incredibly talented and I'm personally a huge fan.
Also the oddest part of this is I’ve watched this video *dozens* of times in the last 12 years and didn’t realize I’d been a little asshole in the comments. Marin is truly my hero, my #1, a huge inspiration to me. 15 year old me needed to chill
Well, yeah, she always has a lot of vibrato, but I'm not saying vibrato, I meant it sounds like she doesn't have as much control over her vibrato as in the rest of the song.
@fludu1 I CERTAINLY did see Alice Ripley live but I can understand why you want clarification. There are so many people, particularly under 35, who rant and rave and they haven't seen the performances they critique. They lack total legitimacy when they say things like "Bernadette Peters is the greatest Mama Rose ever" and then it turns out that they are 19! I think Ripley is way overrated and I am stil stinging from her Little Shop performance. Thank God she was axed.
@samanthatirrell I saw Alice Ripley 3 months ago -- She was dreadful. Almost always flat, her vowels were hideous, and her acting was indulgent as fuck. Marin Mazzie has class and style... and TALENT.
Are any of you serious?A beautiful and intelligent performance.

Ripley is nothing special and especially when she was in Little Shop of Horrors. A horror. Thank God she was replaced.
love her
@pudgeuncle have you seen Alice Ripley do it live?? because i did! It was stunning
She'd be the perfect Sally. I jope she gets to do it someday.
oh this comment just broke my heart. I wish she could have.

I’d like to report my damn self from 12 years ago for being a little asshole. I was 15 and thought I knew shit but I didn’t know shit.

This version if great up until the last "In Buddy's Eyes..." I think it could've been a bit stronger.
I don't mean stronger as in louder, I mean stronger as in the note sounded very wavery.

still gorgious though
I don't care much for her version of this song but she is still wonderful.

Barbara Cook please!
Brilliant. And so much better than Bernadette Peters, whom I just saw in the Broadway revival.
That was painful. Peters was all wrong for the role
Great technical singer, but she is too proper in her tone all the time. Doesn't come off as natural to me.
