I remember watching this film with my Father as a 17 year old my I remember the looks on the Physicians faces who were defendents. I will never forget Paul Newman's reaction to Milo Oshea.
I begged a lawyer friend who refused to watch this film. We watched. He was transfixed. So much so when I asked a very brief question, I was vehemently shushed. With the credits rolling he gushed, "This was very good. The leads were realistic and the story was excellent. I was completely drawn in." Me the actor, nodded.
user-pv9rl4ql3i Lol. Having worked for attorneys for years, the way that insurance defense attorneys operate is "if your side lacks evidence, you dazzle 'em with b.s." It is every defense attorney's sworn duty to give their client their best effort, whether they be on the socially correct side or not. Thus, the attorney, as morally dubious as his tactic was, was doing his job. Bear in mind though, this would not work today as the plaintiff attorney would be quick to counter EXCEPT that this was set in Boston..and as everyone found out from the OJ trial..venues matter.
@@IMeMineWho James Mason versus Paul Newman? Regardless. Don't forget Charlotte Rampling and Jack Warden. All excellent actors. Mason was condescending. People have the ability to understand what they can't express in words.
@@steved8053 It was not just what was not understood with words, but the reason Newman won was that old saying "you cannot unring a bell." Something that S. King also used in his classic The Dead zone" (another great imho.)
It might be Paul Newman’s greatest performance. It’s up there with Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, and Nobody’s Fool. James Mason and Jack Warden were scene stealers though.
"Happy Birthday" to the Incomparable JAMES MASON, in The Incomparable SIDNEY LUMET's 1982 THE VERDICT • •••"FIRST, DO NO HARM" does not apply in the Courtroom
Mason was perfect as the arrogant smug lawyer in a bow tie. You can't help but hate his character. I was 21 when this movie was released and I will never wear a bow tie except if I wear a tuxedo.
I've been a lawyer for 35 years. Been in front of many judges. Some have been real SOB's trying to shape the outcome but that's rare. This is just a movie. So was Caddyshack and I loved the scene Judge Smails took one for the team after AL Czervik teed off. "FORE! I should have yelled 2!"

Should've gotten Anthony Fauci to play one of the doctors. "You can't question my judgment, because if you do, you're questioning SCIENCE! I AM SCIENCE!"
My favorite legal movie - corrupt judge, downtrodden but good lawyer, negligent doctor, crooked defense attorney - nice plot - has it all

Lol. Actress and rock singer with attorney relatives. We all love this film.

A judge is permitted to ask questions of a witness at trial. He/she is NOT permitted to hijack the questioning, as here.
Thx

If a film has Newman in it, it's worth watching, in this case, the whole film is worth watching.
Amazing film!
Dr. Thompson serves as the face of justice ,imo
Joe Seneca as Dr. Thompson. Superb.
Mason is truly superb as the lead attorney
These scenes are so painful to watch, even if you know the ultimate result.
Lol. After this then, go watch The Great Escape! I have seen it at least a dozen times and still shriek at the scary parts.
@@IMeMineWho Well, I certainly always hope that Mac doesn't say 'thank you' when the Gestapo man says 'Good luck'.

Mason is incredible in this...one of his best performances and that's saying a lot considering what an incredible career he had.

This hits close to home
oh, you are a doctor that has been sued for malpractice?
The film Newman should have gotten his Oscar for.
Lesson here is that this judge gets a bit ornery when he doesn’t get his hot soup when he wants it!
Another lesson: the fix is in.
Clearly the judge was biased.
His soup was getting cold

Wow! This judge was an ass from the word go. Terrific screenplay be David Mamet. Newman should have won an academy award for best actor that year.
That judge is the excellent actor Milo O shey.
Gran Gran película 👍

Man, ,that judge was a real prick.
Good actor.
It's the sign of a good actor, and Milo was very good.
Mason was excellent!!!
A masterpiece with stellar acting by Paul Neuman. I think he got an Oscar.

Noo rholo zhee. Agreed.
3:10 Judge Engoron
Good judges call balls and strikes and otherwise lets the lawyers try their cases.
It's a movie
Newman's character failed to pick up on the judge suggesting a break, and so the judge ended it right there and then.
Saint Paul 😅🎭
James Madison #MasterJediactor 😉
Should've gotten Anthony Fauci to play one of the doctors.

Much more so than Marjorie Taylor Greene.
