    I used to practice Deadstick landings in a Super Cub. There was a pair of paved runways out in the middle of a farmer's field in California. There was never anybody or any other airplane around. I would also take friends out there to practice touch and goes. Good Times.

    I'm a private pilot that has been grounded for health reasons for 30 years. Between the improvement of my health and the requirements to fly this airplane I can get my wings back. Had always hoped to fly again. Ant this airplane looks and behaves marvelously! Love the idea of being able to do an engine out glider approach! I'm very excited. ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! One of the best CFIs I have ever observed and I am an FAA 141 Examiner, check pilot, and Gold Seal CFII-ME w/6000+hrs. Over at this same kid's "Challenging Piper Colt FR" Video there were comments from sad tools like "5feetgoaroundfullflapsc150" and CFITOMAHAWK2 knocking this instructor that simply displayed their envy and ignorance. Notice how at critical moments he kept his hands NEAR the stick but never manipulating it unless urgently needed vs too many instructors that constantly nudge/ride the controls? Think his name is Andy Chan and someone in FL should nominate him for CFI of the Year as both skilled and a superb aviation ambassador with these vids as evidence..

    This thing barely stalls at all. Very impressive. The overall philosophy of this plane (impressive glide ratio, docile handling, extremely friendly departure behaviour, parachute) makes it seem very safe.

    • @losttownstreet3409
      @losttownstreet3409 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This wasn't a stall. You need to pull the yoke fast to get this plane in a stall. (one of my mistakes with a double seater. As I learned to fly in a single seater you don't really have an close view of a flight instructor.)
      1:15 isn't a good glide ratio, 1:20 to 1:30 are more common.
      The departure isn't so good as a good plane should climb without rotating (0m to 50m safty start without actively pulling the stick and from there what the plane can handle, it's different from country to country and flight school to flight school but allways stay on the safe side).
      In a gilder you aim for the very firts part of the runnway, to hook up to the towplane fast. It's a nice learning experience as you need to push the plane via hand back if you missed.

    • @Halli50
      @Halli50 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      All "foolproof" small airplanes produced in the last 70 years simply do not have the elevator power to properly stall or enter a spin. The oldest I can think of is e.g. the Piper PA-22-160 TriPacer or the C-172 Skyhawk, the latest is this one, the Pipistrel. Nothing magical or new about a docile and nice-flying small aircraft. BUT - load it improperly and/or do power-on slow flight at low altitude, and ANY one of these docile aircraft will bite you in the arse, and bite HARD!
      Whenever you get your hands on a a new and unfamiliar aircraft, take it to a safe altitude and abuse it in the slow flight regime. If it has any hidden bad habits, this is where you can safely get to know them. The next step is a few barely-flying slow-passes along the runway at 2-3 feet in a landing configuration. This allows you to become familiar with the behavior of this thing in ground effect.

    You really hone your flight skills with a motor-glider. You can almost become as efficient as a test pilot knowing the aircrafts full capabilities and achieving the most from your aircraft. It also has to be one of the best confidence building flight training platforms available for a low-time pilot. I would recommend this type of training to any pilot who would be thinking of aviation as a career. Knowing what you aircraft can and can not do allows for a pilot to focus on the emergency in hoping you can resolve the problem your facing and knowing what your aircraft has available all the way to deciding to land or deploy the ballistic parachute. The only issue with this aircraft is the wide wingspan that may prevent you from landing on a paved road surface. But with such a low landing speed you could set down on a farm field without hopefully doing to much damage to the gear. You have a lot of options with a 50-1 glide ratio. Damn!! Great video!!

    • @FloridaFlying
      @FloridaFlying  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Everything you said is correct but it’s actually a 15:1 glide ratio, maybe it sounded like I said 50. But pipistrel makes versions like the sinus with much better glide ratios, this one is the training aircraft so I’m guessing they went with shorter wings to make it a better all around aircraft. I think with wheel pants and the door closed it goes up to about 17:1. Also check out the sonex Xenos!

    • @FloridaFlying

      Also thanks for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed it

    • @MrWATCHthisWAY
      @MrWATCHthisWAY 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FloridaFlying - I have heard so many different glide ratio’s for this aircraft with the different wing configuration that the basic wing it gets 27:1 and with the extensions it’s reported to have achieved 41:1 ratio’s. There’s no reporting of conditions but NASA reported a 32:1 ratio with the extensions on and they were reporting minimal weight. Dan Johnson had a factory representative reporting an almost 60:1 ratio but given that these numbers are all over the board it’s going to comedown to conditions for that day and aircraft configuration. The operator also stated he could be over the mid point in the Gulf of Mexico at 17,000 feet and glide all the way to Columbia if he lost his engine. But he didn’t mention about battery power requirements. Not sure if I would want to attempt that one. But I guess it’s safe to say that the Petersripol Aircraft glides really well and leave it at that statement!

      John Paul Lafferty thanks for your input! Before this flight I had never really looked into the Pipistrel line of aircraft (except the Panthera, I’m really excited about that one). Personally I think every private pilot should have to have a couple hours in this type of aircraft where they can actually do an engine off and restart procedures and checklists. Just saying. What an amazing tool. It is a little unnerving to be so quiet when as a pilot you are tuned to the sounds your aircraft makes. Every little sound change, you can detect. The opportunity to actually run a checklist, restart and recover? No simulation can compete with the knowledge gained by actually having to perform an emergency procedure. Great video. Thanks.

    All the people saying nicely done 😳 you’re always taught with glide approaches you aim 1/3 the way into the runway. You don’t aim for the standard runway aiming point, that’s fucking suicide! No room for any error, no room for and big headwind changes, or any variables for that matter. Turn a high base side slip if needed, aim 1/3 the way in. Then you have room :)

    • @fritzkatz

    Deadstick landings in a 172 are the main thing I do on a simulator because it's the hardest thing in flying. Sometimes flaps, sometimes not.

    Really enjoyed this! I was noticing that the instructor constantly had his hand guarding the stick. Why did he do this? The pilot seemed to know what he was doing.

    If you get a Private Pilot certificate on this Pipistrel trainer, is that certificate good to fly other planes like a C172?

    Impressive little plane. Pipistrella means 'bat' in Italian. Wonder if that is why it is named as such.

    • @FloridaFlying
      @FloridaFlying  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Read up on the history of Pipistrel, it’s pretty cool. They used to only fly their designs at dusk and night because the country they lived in didn’t allow them to fly. That’s how the bat name came to be

    Try some gliding.
    It's very satisfying flying without that noisy fan up front !
    I used to fly power but now hooked on gliding. It's very addictive !!
    Only one point to note with that landing is the engine will have cooled down significantly during the last 5 mins of no power and to immediately restart it and use it max power might thermal shock it.
    I would not do that to my engine :)

    3 gph. Go to altitude. Cut the engine. You could fly for really cheap. Amazing performance. Looking for my bucket now...
