Fixing Overheating Complain BMW N57 F10

  • Today we going to work on BMW F10 530dx with the N57 diesel engine. The complain is overheating engine oil (or at least the instrument cluster gauge is telling that). The car have been serviced with OEM BMW oil, not so long ago. We going to monitor the coolant and the engine oil temperatures together while we are driving, not with the good old Launch, we going to use the big bad and extremely slow ISTA for this, because Launch have failed us on this task.

    Hi Man. There is a coolant temperature gauge on F10!!!! There is a service menu that you can enter by switching ignition but not starting engine, than you push and hold long (more than may be 30 seconds) the button of reset of daily milage. Than appears the top menu where you need to go to unlock by entering sum of last 5 digits of VIN (by pressing that same reset milage button). Than choose Temperature and you will see it between speed and rotations. Good luck!

    Recently I also have the problem with my 520D F11 that it gets too hot.
    If I ask a lot of power, it sometimes rises to 110 degrees.
    If I then slow down again, the temperature will also calm down.
    Only before I always had that it was exactly 100 degrees.
    I'm going to check the radiator too
    And the temperature of coolant and oil.
    Thnx for the video!

      Yes I found the problem.
      First of all, it is important to know that the temperature you see on the dashboard is oil temperature a not coolant.
      The radiator on my BMW was very dirty. I mounted a new one along with a new condenser. Everything is working as it should again!

    Кранк, на М57 каква следва да е нормалната температура? Навсякъде пише различно. При сменени термостат (Mahle) и почистено между радиаторите, магистрално държи 93-96, при изкачване стига и до 101гр. Колата е с ДПФ, но той работи коректно.

    Hello. Very nice video. I would like to ask you about my car. I have bmw e60 lci 520d with n47d20c engine. When driving on open roads the temperature is constantly 87-88 Celsius, entering the town and slow driving it increases to 95-97, and if i let it running stationary sometimes it goes up to 105 and then the fan turns on and it cools down to 98 and then the process goes on again until it reaches 105-106 until the fan activates. What is your opinion, do you think that this is normal or i have a problem with the coolant temperature sensor. P. S. I checked the radiators they are not clogged. Thanks

    Hi, nice video liked and subscribed. I have bmw f02, same engine, my coolant temp is 100c and oil temp is 70c. Some people say it is normal some say it is bad. So people suggest that I need to change thermostat. Diesel consumption is 9.3l per 100km so emission is not bad. Have heating in cabin. Front grill curtains opens when fully heated. Or I really have a problem? Few days back we checked on same soft, no errors about overeating. Any suggestions, do I really need to change thermostat?

      @edva3533 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely way too hot for M57. Should be around 88-93 degrees celsius. Take the radiator out and blast it with air. A coolant flush could also help. If still overheating after cleaning the radiator, install a new radiator.

    • @crank3646

    Almost 347,000 km on that engine? I wonder what has been done to it previously, like how many times the timing chains have been replaced and if it had some major rebuilds. I'm considering replacing my M57N2 equipped E65 with a newer F01 with N57 and I'm somewhat scared of the N57 engine. My M57N2 had TC done at 325k and sits at 460k now, but have started to eat bearings :(

    • @crank3646
      @crank3646  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nothing interesting, except full engine overhaul, new block and crankshaft. On 260k kms the crankshaft was gone. The chains were almost snapped. The N57 is much more delicate than the M57.

    • @asbjornster
      @asbjornster 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@crank3646 Oh ok. That's a lot then. Not an engine that lived its life as normal up to that mileage (as expected really). I guess that's why I see so many N57 equipped cars going for sale at around the 200-230k km mark. Expect major repairs for the new owner. Thankfully, and mostly because you have great videos about it, I see it as a DIY project given you have the special tools and normal equipment. Workshops here in Norway charge in excess of €6000 for the TC job (worn, not broken). They quoted me €8000 a few years back for the M57N2, so I did it in Poland instead for less than a tenth of the price - go figure..
