      I remember one time I forgot my Google password and password reset won't work. The next day I got all my files on the internet for free! Although I had to dig deep, but seems they couldn't contact me personally so they thought of publicly sharing it so I could pick it up. So sweet!

    These partitions had massive unbreakable passwords that we made up on the spot.

    Hi
    I have encrypted my entire portable hdd as a single partition. I want to make a hidden partition.
    1. Is it possible to create this within my current vearcrypt partition or do i have to make separate partitions first and then encrypt them and choose one as hidden?
    Alternatively:
    Would it be better for me to create a hidden FILE within this existing encrypted partition instead of aiming to have two partitions?
    Lastly:
    My encrypted partition has data stored in it already. Should i delete this and start over or can i continue from here?
    The instructions do not go into this at all. Any knowledge you can share will be extremely helpful and greatly appreciated.

    I want to hear an explaination on the benefits and differences between using Veracrypt for full disk encryption and partition encryption. I prefer to encrypt my entire hard drive but every time I go through the veracrypt wizard it pushes you towards just encrypting your C drive partition instead of your entire drive.

    • @rikuklaxosaur4521
      @rikuklaxosaur4521 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kenneth I need to know what happens if I’ve deleted a partition I set up and encrypted. So I’m assuming I just lost the space and the files I put in it. I don’t mind if the files are gone, as I wanted them gone this time. But that is what I want to make sure. Thoughts?

    • @klwthe3rd
      @klwthe3rd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rikuklaxosaur4521 it depends on whether you decrypted the drive before you deleted it. As you know deleting anything on a drive doesn't truly erase it. But if the partition was encrypted and deleted as an encrypted partition then it should be ok. If I was you to be safe, I would still wipe the drive(whether it be a HDD or SSD) which overwrites the deleted partition with 1's and 0' just to be extra safe. The problem with Veracrypt is that computer forensic experts can find traces of the use of Veracrypt if the drive is not wiped or destroyed which can make them suspious as to why you were encrypting the drive in the first place. Also, not all encryption algorithms are the same. In my opinion, I tend to like open source algorithms such as Two Fish since the NSA didn't have their hands in the design for which many suspect a potential backdoor. Hope it helps.

    • @rikuklaxosaur4521
      @rikuklaxosaur4521 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@klwthe3rd yes that helps. So using overwrite software which allows higher level destruction and wiping aught to seal the deal. I just want my photos and other private things secured. It's a shame that nothing can be truly erased though.

    • @klwthe3rd

    You didn't show the actual part, after encryption is done on an external drive how to mount it? Windows says to format drive to use it.

    • @austinpowell1883
      @austinpowell1883 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok so what you want to do is not click format you want to mount the drive with veracrypt by clicking select drive > pick the flashdrive partition > mount or click auto mount drives

      @@austinpowell1883 Ya got it now, but this type of encryption is risky as anyone might format the drive by mistake.

      Do you know if I can decrypt a flash drive that was encrypted with Veracrypt on another computer just by dowbloding veracrypt and putting my password? Or do I need to do something else if im not using the computer I originally encrypted it on?

    Thing is though, if I want to encrypt a file that contains all of my 50+ complex passwords I ever use for work and home, I have to have 1 complex password to decrypt it, thus I'm back where I started. I still need to physically store a password somewhere and I don't have a safety deposit box in a bank...

    Why are you saying full disc encryption is slow when accessing data.!?
    After starting your system the encryption password will be asked and at that moment your disc will be decrypted and your os is allowed and able to start.
    After that you’re system behaves pretty much like any other system when it comes to speed.
    I highly doubt you will even notice any difference on a SSD.
    Please elaborate on your reasoning for discouraging full disk encryption sure there are issues but those are related to backup and such

    • @CryptoTonight9393
      @CryptoTonight9393 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that the speed is not really noticeably different. But veracrypt does not completely decrypt the drive when you start the computer. It decrypts/encrypts on the fly there is a speed penalty for this but it is negligible

    • @samdeur
      @samdeur 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CryptoTonight9393 i starting to think just encrypting a folder that contains sensitive data is preferable over encrypting the whole disk.. personally i scan all my household letters you know bills and stuff and put them in a folder that would be a good candidate to encrypt..

    I have no idea what he mummbling about slowdowns when encrypting system part... The whole part. is only decrypted at the pre-boot when you start your pc and thats the only time where the cpu hit takes place, you no longer do any encrypting nor decrypting while using windows, the whole pre-boot works just like mounting an encrypted volume but the difference is you doing it before you even start the windows. thus pre-boot.. The only hit on cpu happens when you encrypting partition or disk or files and thats only once, and the every time you enter your password to decrypt these things, thats it
    Also about encrypting the system drive this is not something you want to stay as far away from as possible, quite opposite actually because if you really work with some sensitive data the windows leaves traces of working with that data within the system drive and that can be potentially recovered and it basically compromises the idea of encrypting something in the first place.. Examples of such traces are: cache, thumbnails, shellbags etc..
    Even another thing to note, most encryption systems are vulnerable to cold-boot attacks.. If someone really wants to get the data from your computer and you are using top-notch encrypting softwares they will attempt to do a cold-boot attack.. Its basically an attack that has to take place when the system is either in sleep or lock screen, they spray the ram/s with those liquid cooling thingies, pop out the ram and hook it into another system that will basically download all the data from those rams, one of such data is encryption keys which are always stored in ram if you have something decrypted at that time, for example system part. or some encrypted container even just basic windows password.. The person can find those keys in the memory dump and read it out easily then placing the ram/s back, starting the system and simply entering the correct passwords he obtained.. The whole process takes 2-5 minutes and the only way to surely avoid this is to always shut-down the system when you are going away from it for a longer time.. After shutdown the data on ram then fades completely within 2-3 seconds and the encryption keys wont ever be recoverable..
    Also there are other things which can someone do to your system when you are not near it, the most common thing is a hardware keylogger installed in your keyboard or by professionals even directly into your laptop/PC/motherboard.. This is a pretty common tactic by the law enforcement cos they usually cant extort or torture you to give out passwords but judge can easily give out a warrant for collecting the information in this way..., ever heard about some cases where they lock up some big important person and he gets out of prison for a week or month and then hes back in prison again? Yeah thats exactly what is happening, all his stuff can now have a keylogger and he wont ever know about it, its such a classic and it works like 90% of the time..
