  • Complete setup and guide to encrypting your files, folders, operating systems, and drives with Veracrypt, a free and open source encryption software. Veracrypt will keep your files in encrypted containers which will keep your data safe. It is commonly regarded as the best encryption software, and a much more versatile option compared to Microsoft Window's Bitlocker, and Apple's MacOS Filevault. Veracrypt is cross-compatible with Windows, MacOS, and Linux. This tutorial will break down the software and how to do full disk encryption on Windows.

Techlore in regards to the Full Disk Encryption, does is delete all the files and programs you've installed on it? I know you said that the *Wipe Mode* doesn't remove your data, but there are others sites and videos and forum that do claim that it does. So what is the truth?

    Great video! Two important information:
    1) Your encrypted volume is only as strong as your password. Make sure it's at least 30 characters long, as your adversary can bruteforce it with trillions guesses per second. Something like - DonaldtheDADDYTrumpisTHICCboi!damn# is a strong and memorable password.
    2) Hidden Volumes: They are made to give you a protection of plausible deniability. In certain jurisdiction, like the UK or (parts of) US, if the police finds your encrypted storage, you must give them a decryption key. With Veracrypt hidden volume, you actually create a decoy volume, where you store sensitively looking data. And the hidden encrypted volume stores your actually sensitive data. What's crucial is that these two volumes have DIFFERENT passwords. So that when you are asked by the law enforcement to hand over your decryption key, you can give them a password to your decoy volume and they will never know about the hidden volume.
Always encrypt in a hidden volume. It's only one more step but will give you a tremendous security.

      Great Points!
I haven't used VeryCrypt or any other full disk encryption tool yet....
but what about volume sizes for the hidden volumes? Lets say I got a 8tb external hard drive which I want to encrypt. Can I just create a 7.9tb sized hidden volume and a 0.1tb visible regular "decoy" volume or would that be too obvious to law enforcement that there MUST be more than just a 100gb sized volume?
Since they will probably notice that I use VeraCrypt can't they just infer that I am using a hidden volume (based on the 8tb sticker on the outside of the hard drive) which then I have to give them the decryption key anyway? Which then brings me back to the beginning ... why use a hidden volume in the first place when it is kinda obvious that there is one.
Or does the hidden volume only makes sense for smaller volumes that are .. idk... just a couple gb in size?
      greetings

    • @TheHatedOne
      @TheHatedOne 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Official VeraCrypt advice is to use both hidden and decoy volume more or less equally. The size of the encrypted file is the sum of hidden and decoy volumes. If you can defend yourself by plausible deniability, law enforcement would have to prove there is another volume. Giving them access to your decoy volume shouldn't by itself reveal there is another volume or encrypted partition. It also shouldn't be possible to tell you are using veracrypt software. I don't have any legal experience with this. Follow this for more information www.veracrypt.fr/en/Plausible%20Deniability.html
The fact that you can go to prison for merely encrypting your drive and refusing to give law enforcement access to it when they have no probable cause or reasonable suspicion is beyond terrifying. We are talking about democratic countries like the United Kingdom. How there are nor riots in the streets because of this is beyond me.

Thank you very much for this!
It was the VeraCrypt Boot Loader in the video above (6:20 min) that made me think about it. But as long as one doesn't encrypt the system partition one should be on the safe side - as I understand it- since nobody can tell that VeraCrypt is used.
Any info on how the security relates to the issues Truecrypt had in its final days - regarding any backdoors?
Is it still a concern or is the issue already resolved and completely of the table as it is open source?
Thats what always kept me away from using it - even though I will probably never be targeted by any law enforcement. But whats the point in using it if there is a backdoor.
Many thanks in advance, I really appreciate it!

    Techlore:
Regarding the "demo" VeraCrypt file that you created:
Upon creating the encrypted folder, you copied (not moved) your unencrypted folder and its files to the encrypted folder.
You left behind the original folder and its files. Some folks, unfamiliar with this process, might believe that the original folder is now encrypted (which it is not).
It should also be noted that if you move sensitive files, from your unencrypted drive, to your encrypted folder, a recovery program has a good chance of restoring (or un-deleting) the original files.
The only files that have the protection of VeraCrypt's encryption are those that are in the encrypted folder. Everything that is, or was, outside of that encrypted folder is the same as it always was.
    Cheers!

Exactly what I thought.. You should always delete sensitive data originals with software like Eraser for example which will delete the file and overwrite the sector on disc where the file was originally.. Normal windows deletion is just windows marking the area on disc as ready to be overwritten with something else in the future but there might not come to that point on large drives esp. when you just recently deleted a lot of stuff, windows might not replace that sector for a long time and it could be recovered.. I heard there are also other softwares which can be set to slowly overwrite data in the background which were targetted by you for this process so that might be great if you work with a lot of such stuff, or just work with that sfuff in the encrypted drive.. Also note that some programs for example photoshop or aftereffects even browsers etc. utilize their own cache storage locations in which professionals can dig up the leftovers of files as these softwares dont tend to delete the cache files when you close the program and if they do, the just use the regular delete without overwriting the sectors on disk so the deleted cache files might be recoverable

Excellent initiativ! One thing I've always felt is missing in the whole discussion about privacy, is the low-tech, often used, examples of private data being used.
Everyone knows that their data is being collected, stored and used. But few seem to understand what it means and why they should care. Facebook, Google, Apple and all the others are doing a great job convincing people it is for statistics and analytics only. We need a video showing examples of Price-disciminations. (Air-line and hotels are easiest to show this exaple with). comercials following you around the web/targeted adds. Prices of products going up/down the more you revisit a site. 2FA phone numbers being sold to add-vendors. Generally "Hands on" examples where your data are being 'mis'used against you as a person/consumer. I believe such a video would be very useful to inform the non-technical people why their private information is important

Is there a way to easily mount the drive without having to open up the program and doing it manually? (non-system full disk encryption)
Also, something very dangerous is that if you try to open the drive in windows explorer it will prompt you to format the disk. If you click format it instantly deletes all the data, encrypts and you lose everything... Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

The reason I ask, you mentioned you can encrypt a file or folder, and I cannot select a folder to encrypt but I can select a file. Thanks for the clarification!

There was some misunderstanding on your part. You cannot encrypt neither file nor folder as-is (in their location). You encrypt them by moving them (or creating them) to the Veracrypt volume.

    1. Still the best in 2021?
    2. If open-source and no longer supported... doesn't that mean will become vulnerable somehow?
    3. Why no more than 1-wipe for SSDs?
    Thanks!

One thing: when you clicked "Select File" you never explicitly selected a file, at leastthat I could detect. Is that because VeraCrypt will create (what we're calling) a file (i.e. the container) in that location? This was unclear. But if so, it seemed to defeat the purpose of navigating to "select a file", so that whole process is as confusing AF. Plus that VeraCrypt warning that I read. "If you select an existing file, VeraCrypt will not encrypt it" only compounded the confusing nature of the instruction. But I think I get it now. Can you please confirm that in the Select File dialog box, we are merely navigating to the place where we will create the container but we don't select any file?

Does veracrypt is compatible with Android?
I want to encrypt my SanDisk pendrive.
Initially I encrypted it with bitlocker but then I can only use it in windows. My SanDisk pendrive has USB type C port too, so I want to use it in Android and MacOS also. Veracrypt is compatible with MacOS but is it compatible with Android??

So I have a question.. Could you perhaps encrypt a folder like you did and ut it on a cloud shared drive?
For example: lets say you have around 30 workers and you want only 5 to have access to this folder but they all have access to the cloud shared drive.
Is it possible to open the encrypted files from the devices not using veracrypt?

I've done some research and seen that other people have this problem; however, I'm unable to find any solutions. I'd be very grateful if you could offer some advice. Much thanks.
