Are You With Me? Checking the connection with your horse before mounting

What do you think is the main benefit of checking your connection with your horse before mounting?
Here's mine: As a Happy Horse Happy Life advocate and Instructor, I'm all about that connection! I don't know if you've ever been in an unexpected situation while riding. If you ride long enough, you know you will encounter an unexpected situation. When that happens, I'd rather have my horse look to me for safety, than explode in an attempt to run away from whatever spooked him. I want to be my horse's first port of call when going gets tough. I don't want to just control my horse while riding, I want to be connected to him.
