I spread lime in my fields every spring, then brush hog it one time a year, usually late August, a cheap alternative to food plots- been working. Thanks Jeff.
I'm in the process of building 3/4 acre plot, screening, bedding, etc. Im changing the property completely. We baited here and most years did well but I literally had 2 adult does and 3 fawns last year but we had at least 15, 1-2 year old bucks and probably 3, 3.5 year old bucks with a few older bucks passing thru during the rut. I'm hoping the changes I'm making are correct. I've been following you and got your web classes and am doing my best to make my property a great property this season. Thank you for all your great info and tips! I'll keep you updated!

I always thought having more doe is better. i’ve got a group of seven doe right now every day every afternoon they’re in my food plots eating all year this year all I’ve gotten on my camera is a spike several pictures of and one picture of a six point in the beginning of the season. I thought having more doe will bring in more bucks during the the rut.
Great videos Jeff. I have been practicing the John Komp 3 tire plot sytem for 3 years now. Only a small strip of clover for summertime food. S/W Michigan. I also do the no till buckwheat program during the summer. The parcel is small and is bordered by a main highway. The other side is AG. No matter how many doe we kill, they just keep coming back. It’s a huge problem here, but what else could I do?
Is it possible to have both? For instance, big summer and fall food plots on one end of a 200 acre parcel then small 1 acre or less food plots in the hills and woods with diverse cover on the other end? In my mind, I don’t know in practice, but it would seem to have places for the children and family to have high-probability hunts and keep the freezers full from doe-season, but still afford to have quality mature bucks to hunt during archery season.
Des will always be there when you have high quality. The trick is to not have too many...once you cross that tipping pint the number of bucks will significantly decrease that can be on your land during daylight. You almost alwayd want big, holding plots...supported by smaller plots. The big plots are best kept irregular shaped and within the flow of the land....if possible. You want to keep the level of attraction consistent around the entire parcel...no big, changing food plot types from one plot to the next.
Jeff very interesting video. I can appreciate the first portion of the video. As someone obsessed with deer movement on public, the consequence of growing up hunting the UP and bow hunting downstate Michigan painted a whacky picture of how deer worked for me! Luckily that's all sorted now! My question for you Jeff is: Will dispersing and mature bucks give up quality food for less female social pressure? I tend to get drawn to quality food sources on public because there just aren't many. I find myself seeing less deer as I try to position myself anywhere from 300 yards (ag) to a mile (further north) from quality food. I have been seeing way less deer than tucking closer to those sources. This feels worse and better at the same time from what I am hearing!
Hey Jeff, I love your videos. I recently started hunting whitetail and you’ve taught me a lot. My question is: Can I kill more does on my property to help thin down the doe population? I love the meat they provide and it seems like a better alternative than running them off. I have 20 acres in Montana. Thanks Jeff!
As usual great video Jeff! Question though on the clover, how do you grow clover in the summer to have diversity without creating a doe factory? The doe in the past don't ever get to the neighbors fields because of my small clover plots they destroy. I Do the buckwheat to brassica plantings in parts of the plots as suggested but the clover just feels like a waste. I am in south eastern MN with 26 acres and about 1 acre of food plots all spread out. Your thoughts? Thanks!
Thank you Jeff for another great video! I just stumbled onto your TH-cam channel recently and have expanded my knowledge 2x since. Was wondering if you could touch on in one of your videos about the use of gravity feeders to create afternoon food locations. They are legal here in Ohio and it feels like if you don't use one you can't compete with your neighbor. Wondering about the impact on creating doe factories. Thanks much...keep the great content coming.
I noticed in a video you said you like running beagles. I too am a houndsman that has 3 awesome beagles. I manage my 7 acres for deer ,rabbits, Turkey and pheasant here in south central PA. Am I ruining my small parcel by running my beagles after deer season? Thanks jeff.
Been planting buckwheat followed by rye But the deer eat the buckwheat and won't let it grow. What do you think about planting sorghum followed by rye?
The sorghum is bad because the stalks are too wide and do not deteriorate fast enough to allow sunlight to get to the seed and soil. The good thing is that rye will germinate on pavement 😊 so even if the buckwheat is gone...you can simply broadcast on tip of the soil and enjoy the season. Also the buckwheat roots are great soil builders!
Jeff has dozens of videos on his recommended food plot blends. Just go to his channel and search for food plots. A good one is his 2020 food plot video.
The good thing is that it is a very low level of atrraction...but with a lot of does it can be eaten at too high a level! You will have to see. They didn't touch it around here in SW WI or SE MN...they didn't on my UP of MI parcel either.
Jeff, got all the ash logs and debris cleared out of my 5 acre thicket leaving only standing maple. Small maple. I thought about burning the forest floor before I hinge the maples. Thoughts?
Hi Shawn! Burning the foeest floor will do nothing for you in most of the north 1/2 of the country. What you need is woody growth, not green herbaceous growth. Hingecutting those maples will be a perfect next step for you it sounds like! Think of it this way...I get paid to be right, and to perform at the highest level and wouldn't even consider burning on my SE MN or SW WI parcels I hunt on. I hope that helps?
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 very interesting Jeff. I exclusively am a Michigan man, and always was confused how often I would watch some experts prescribe fire after a cutting. Turns out the habitat manager I watch that does that bases almost all of his clients in the south. Thank you so much for clarifying that it's not what we are looking for up here in the north! I have found so many more deer late season packed around red osier/woody growth (mother natures diversity pockets!) here on public.
Jeff - Already thinking about buckwheat plantings for a few no till food plots. Have you ever used a large heavy lawn roller to crush the buckwheat or should I just invest in a cultipacker?
This one is hard for me to grasp... my biggest take away is to plant food plots in the late summer Vs early summer. But planting switch grass feels like it would encourage fawning grounds and you seem to be a big proponent of switch grass.
When you talk about dropping mature trees every 40 yards to open the canopy, are you leaving them for side cover or cleaning up the mess to make sure the sunlight gets through?
Thanks again Jeff! I had a question about goldenrod, is it good for anything? Here on my IL property I have a lot. I guess what I'm saying is can the deer get anything out of goldenrod?
It's not bad summer browse and then moderate cover for Fall. Switchgrass for true cover in your area would be several times better and then allowing golden rod, briars, woody growth to come in within the switch is ideal for diversity pockets. As a whole not bad habitat...but not great either.
@@whitetailhabitatandhunting I think it stands for "conservation restoration prairie " . It's basically the tall grass areas where you see various grasses and plants like goldenrod.
Good morning Jeff had a few bucks on my land in most of sept/oct then for some strange reason they disappeared I’m trying to create an atmosphere where the female social pressure is not overwhelming any thoughts

Thank you Jeff. It snowed today but I still have the itch to play in the dirt. Heres to more bucks this year.
It snowed here too yesterday! I'm itching too...seeded 3.5 acres of switchgrass over the weekend 🙂 Hope you have more bucks this season!
