The fact that they handled her harsh questions so calmly and respectfully shows what kind of people they really are. Lyle's testimony in the first trial was so gut wrenching I can totally understand why he didn't want to go through it again. To bare the most painful details of your abuse and then to not be believed and even mocked must be incredibly disheartening.
As someone who was emotionally abused by my mother, I understand why they handled this rudeness so well. You get used to being disrespected, humiliated, gaslighted... and when someone treats you the way she treated them, it feels normal to you, because you're used to being treated like crap.
yes, and ignorant too(sorry), even if you don't believe someone when they say they were ab*s*d you should still try to remain as respectful as you can in case it is true(like in this case, obviously) and a true professional would have done at least SOME research about ch*ld s****al ab*s*, the way she asked some questions shows that she did not do any research... I suppose back then it wasn't as easy to get access this type of information though, I guess :/
Erik really likes her - he said she asks certain questions in unorthodox ways to get the best out of people…from this clip I’d say he’s right. They gave such a powerful response “things don’t make a lot of sense emotionally”
@@Maryreal1 That is true, and I agree with him actually, but it's still a bit upsetting to see someone ask those kind of questions and specially in that way, especially because, at least in my opinion, people(journalists, interviewers, etc.) should do at least a bit of research into such delicate subjects so as to not re-victimize the interviewee in case what they're saying is true, yet again, I suppose at the time this interview happened doing at ''least some research'' was a bit difficult and took way more time than it would today. I do have to say though, as a survivor of C S A, I have nothing but respect for both Lyle and Erik for being able to handle the interview(and the questions at the trial, everything really) in such a calm way, in my case I would have probably broken down in tears(frustration and anger) for being treated as if I were a liar over and over by everyone, having someone doubt your testimony is just as traumatizing as the ab**e itself.
Lyle didnt want to remember trauma. Apparently, it was difficult for him at the time. But Erick had procesed it differently. He is emotionally and spiritually stronger than his brother, so he can talk about what happened to them more openly and wisely. He is an old soul, very sensitive and tortured.
Dr. William Vicary, Erik’s prison psychiatrist, said that Lyle was more fragile than Erik. Lyle didn’t even want to testify about the abuse in the first trial and you could tell it was incredibly hard and painful for him to do so. I get it’s Barbara’s job but she’s incredibly rude interrupting them trying to explain themselves. It sums up their entire case perfectly - everyone in the media trying to talk over them and silence them.
@@shannonoreilly4695lyle had written a 17 page letter to erik before the trial, which was basically about how he did not want to testify, and how important it is that they remain close as brothers. And yes, lyle was absolutely shattered by everything that had happened. A few lines from the letter which really broke my heart "if it wasn't for you, I would never try for manslaughter. @@shannonoreilly4695 I agree completely. The media has always kept trying selling stereotypes about people. Its convenient. @@shannonoreilly4695 I've noticed Eric is that way right from the start. Because you cant talk the way he does about trauma and facts if you havent accepted and processed it at certain level. Otherwise you simply arent able to speak without bursting into tears and misery. That`s why Lyle didnt want to talk about it or wouldnt repeat testimony in public. Nobody wants to feel ashamed. Im a survivor myself too.
owh yes same. when I watch Erik court trial, he's much more composed even though he's said to be the emotional one, the crybaby. BUT Lyle, he's always on the edge of crying which I'm very shocked?? I think Lyle cry more than Erik on the stand, I might be wrong 😮 I had the same feeling, Erik remember everything from his childhood, but Lyle just doesn't want to remember anything. he's there because he need to testify
I also heard Lyle say that if his grandmother had not still been alive during the second trial, he would’ve had an easier time doing it. He didn’t want to put her through that testimony again😢
Erik’s feelings towards Lyle not testifying must be so complex. On one hand, he defends Lyle from Barbara and says it was a joint decision; on the other, he says it was a mistake and if they could do it over again Lyle should testify-which Lyle disagrees with. They’ve each done so much over the years that could have frustrated the other, but they still always show a united front. Their bond is truly remarkable.
And really!!!! She is so rude and nasty. I agree. These are trauma and abused victims, that is not easy to just tell the whole world watching. 😢, she has no sympathy or humanutarism in her
Well PTSD victims respond differently fight flight and freeze Lyle froze obviously being degraded during the first trial was too much for him I think he was treated better less physical abuse by the parents too so Erik was more desensitized she's not their therapist she's just some sensationalist talk show host listen to how rude she was to Corey Feldman too he didn't even kill anyone he just said he and Haim had been abused and she immediately victim blamed and shamed him too.

Yah but they never did a public interview ever again after this

0:18 the way erik was quick to defend his brother❤
They care for each other a lot, that's brotherly love.❤
Barbara was a horrific interviewer
She is so rude !!!
Meanwhile, I think the way she looks at the person she's interviewing is the rudest thing about her!
I never liked Barbara Walters. I never remember between the boys, which is which.

He still looked emotional when he looked at Erik
We have to change how we handle victim testimony. It's traumatizing.
Why does she have such an attitude

i think lyle had a harder time processing the abuse and trauma he experienced
