The thing about the Santa Fe for me is how good their locomotives looked. The warbonnets and yellowbonnets, it felt like a legacy railroad. BNSF isn't the same, their paint scheme feels soulless and empty. The ATSF gave an image of "I want to work for them!" And "quality service to our customers"
@@chuckmiller4871 I think Judy garland would have a heart attack and die again if she saw what Santa Fe had become. But more importantly she’d go “wow those drugs and meds got to me because I see a lot of orange!”
We spent our photo vacations on the ATSF back in 1994-5-6.(Illinois) Knowing the end was near. And seeing all those red/silver locos was amazing. I remember a train at Edelstein had all GP20-30-35 lashup. Due to easy grades, ATSF kept a lot(what remained) of the older power on the Chi.-KC route.
If you want to see awesome power today, Minnesota's the perfect place for railfanning. SD75s, Warbonnets (REAL ones), Geeps on the mainline, SD40-2s, all EMD consists, Leslie RS series horns, awesome and rare shortline locomotives, etc, etc.
These were before BN took the ATSF over. Love that blue and yellow. The blue and yellow F units were amazing. Anyone remember when SP was going to merge with ATSF? The locomotives were painted red and yellow, with a big SP or SF on them.
@@xavierjackson3796Yeah, BNSF doesn’t care about it’s heritage. We need the War Bonnet to return along with the Blue Bonnet, the rare Yellow Bonnet, and the unheard of Gold Bonnet.
Ya know what? These clips make railfanning look better and more exciting than it is now. You wanna know why? Because at least you got to see something other than a bunch of GEVOs on trains.
Ship and travel Santa Fe all the way. That was the proud slogan that the Santa Fe had for many years during the glory days of railroads before more advanced competitors unfortunately took over most passenger and freight business. But unlike most other railroads which could not cope with the reality and either went bankrupt and went out of business or became part of the merger game, the Santa Fe boldly and bravely soldiered on until the latter end of the 1990s when BNSF took over. But in today's modern era BNSF has mostly taken up where the Santa Fe left off, hustling priority intermodal business better than many trucking companies.
Spot on! Regulation hurt many. Now, in hindsight, we see the loss and the expense of rebuilding that infrastructure. I should be able to get on a train and go from A to B as in the case overseas. BN and SF merged and are seemingly doing well. Sadly - the variety is missing for us camera heads.
Im happy bnsf exists, but i think they should keep their swoosh mark and where the atsf ran should repaint half units into warbonnet ,and the other half to bn executive and or green and black with white nose stripes.
That GE Locomotive air compressor at 5:23 though!
"whoop"

Couldn't agree more. Thanks
That's what the SJVR does to me.
Because Santa Fe actually cared about railroading. BNSF is just another modern-day corporation who only cares about the color green $$.
Boxcars and hoppers with no graffiti. I like it!!
Seems like a lifetime ago.
I love this dashing video in the 90's! Great show! Thank you.
When the merger came in 95, the ATSF spirit wasn’t kept alive. It was tarnished in orange day by day on the Burlington the Northern and the Santa Fe.
Couldn't agree more.

Fantastic video showcasing the old Santa Fe at its finest.
Thanks, Chuck for all your wonderful videos.
Thanks, Mark. Pop & I had a great time.
Oh what I would take to go to 1995 where there something other than just one type of engine on the main lines (gevos)
HI hear that!
I like how smooth the transitions were between each shot
You found a great spot to capture trains from either direction...
Indeed! And that's back in the day when we used the DeLorme Gazatteer maps.
Best videos from Sante Fe switchman of the 70’s.
LOVE to see all of these classics, great video!!! SUB'd

It was a fun place to shoot around during those years and you're exactly right about the odd ball lashups.

I saw some of those Santa Fe Warbonnets like Santa Fe #920 today down in BNSF Murray Yard where they've sat for years.

Searchlights and Santa Fe Bonnets. Those were the days.
Heartwarming video. 💯
Santa Fe, Come Back...
JDzOnline Wdym lmao? BNSF is Santa Fe and Burlington Northern, so technically they’re still here.
@@grobterm santa fe might be here still but there are very few warbonnits left
grobb he is talking about the original Santa Fe. Like the ones in this video

Absolutely love this !!!
Amazing action!!!
Edited for sure but pop had a knack for finding great spots!
Amazing Catch!
For me its kind of cool seeing amtrak and santa fe both going almost at the same high speed
Awesome Catch!

The very reason why I no longer photograph trains. Nothing but junk everywhere.
Cope, those GEVOs are powering the US economy
@@F-14DSuperTomcatIt would be nice if the economy was powered by some more variety.
back in the days when trains had like 9-10 trains on there lash up and 4-5 dpu in the middle...........
1:15 woah
Nice Catch!
Why is there an Amtrak on Santa Fe? 5:23
I wish Santa Fe didn’t merge with Burlington Northern

Okeedokee sir thanks for the info
No lecture intended.
5:24 holy crap that's a dash 8
It is.
Dashing through the hills looking at a train coming RIGHT FOR ME
Very fast!

5:08 Amtrak
Nice
The way the trains are going that you have listed is wrong, the ones you have for Westbound are really Eastbound and the Eastbound ones are Westbound.
Is that the Coast Starlight?
No that's the southwest chief
If memory serves me right that's the Southwest Chief. Not certain when the train moved from the ex Santa Fe to the ex Burlington however.
P 90; F 70
dam i love thoes sd40 45 units the best ever built in my book
