Glad I found this video. Tried to look up “summer bug at night chee chee chee sound” and kept getting snowy tree cricket. Nope, definitely a katydid, which I had never heard of but was very familiar with the sound.

I said “bug at night, chick chick chick sound” haha

I also tried searching 'which insect makes a sound like ch-ch-ch-ch.
I'm in Georgia right now in the middle of August and in my backyard I can hear about four katydids communicating with each other, but I only hear a pulse of four consistently. Never two or three times, at least not yet since I started listening after moving here recently. It's definitely neat listening to them communicate, though.

"bug 3 triple sound at night"
That did not work, so I put "night bug sounds North Carolina"

If you're a city kid who has just moved into the country and the sound is literally making you psychotic at night, if you HOLLER REAL LOUD at them, they will shut up---for about 5 seconds. Restores your sense of control over the situation, if only briefly!!

This summer I heard a chirping at night that I've never heard before. I searched birds, cicadas and crickets and came up with nothing until now. Thank you so much for helping me figure out the sound I've been hearing!

Love listening to these guys scritching out their 2-, 3-, and 4-chirp patterns up in the nearby trees. Listen and try to anticipate the counts. The sound of peaceful late summer evenings, home in New England.

I love this sound. This and the crickets at night. I described it as "ch-Chə-Chə-chə". Nothing about it remotely sounds like "ka-ty-did" to me. I was quite pleased to be able to hear these lovely soothing summer night sounds all winter when my housemate fed insects to his tarantula in the terrarium with its electric warmer.

I heard this last night. I noticed a Katydid about two days ago. Last night, I was sitting out, as I feed a stray cat, when all at once, this noise was right behind me, scared me a good one! I had NO idea what is was, I looked behind me, there was the Katydid up on the vinyl siding by the front door. The sound was loud!

Thanks for the reply. I just heard the Katydid again on youtube, hadn't heard it since late summer, wow, that noise is different from any other. I wouldn't want to listen to it everyday, at the same time, am intrigued by it!

There was a katydid clung to one of the windows at my apartment today. I'm sure in the past I have confused them with praying mantises. They look kind of like a hybrid between a grasshopper and a praying mantis. Thanks again!

We just moved out into the country and though I'd seen these things around in the suburbs before, I had no idea that was the noise they made. We've heard hundreds around the house at night but we are close to a pond so I thought they were toads or frogs. Thanks for the education!

  • @Flamingpinapples7

A daytime chorus of cicadas has NOTHING on a nighttime chorus of katydids. When they're thick at night in the appalachian mountains, they're absolutely deafening.

The sound that's driving me crazy at night is similar but sharper and more high pitched ans sounds like it is right next to my bedroom window. I'm wondering if I should spay peppermint or something around this area?

Last night I heard the sound of maybe a few💯 's of these Katydids bugs rubbing their Wings together & God is my witness but what I hears coming from these masses of Katydids with their combined sounds crescending in such a unison sound as they were a choir chanting, "Hap-py, Hap-py, Hap-py"
Nature speaks & is understood if anyone listens 👂 👂.
The sound was so explicate that it literally frightened me.
    Listen carefully they're messengers.

I love singing insects! We have nothing here in the Puget Sound but some field crickets in the late fall. Growing up in the rural / suburban interface of the Willamette Valley, the tree crickets would create a rhythm that made the whole air thrum. I would occasionally find katydids--a very special event for me as a kid.
