Glad to watch your faces appreciating the many movements of CTTE. I jokingly say Jon Anderson came from another planet to possess such an angelic voice. Yes, ELP, and Deep Purple relied upon their keyboardists driving the songs as much as bass and drums. That trifecta is so awesome to listen to imho.
Try Prologue/Suite Madame Blue from Styx. Very appropriate song in today's world.

Ah the term "Progressive" dimmed to "Prog". I preferred the term Art Rock, a term that was lost in the vagueness, but refers to reaching for artistic goals, not "popular" in conception, but avante-guard in the best sense. A new form, like opera, symphony, epic, novel, cinema. Its the difference between Artist driven ambitions and market forces. Oh ya, most important, ATTENTION SPAN. The audience has to approach the work, the work is not tailored to approach the audience. Those with courage to reach for it are rewarded for their open-mindedness with Opened Minds.

    "Close To The Edge" lyrics
    Yes Lyrics
    "Close To The Edge"
[I The Solid Time Of Change]
A seasoned witch could call you from the depths of your disgrace
And rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace
And achieve it all with music that came quickly from afar
Then taste the fruit of man recorded losing all against the hour
And assessing points to nowhere, leading every single one
A dewdrop can exalt us like the music of the sun
And take away the plain in which we move
And choose the course you're running
Down at the edge, round by the corner
Not right away, not right away
Close to the edge, down by a river
Not right away, not right away
Crossed the line around the changes of the summer
Reaching out to call the color of the sky
Passed around a moment clothed in mornings faster than we see
Getting over all the time I had to worry
Leaving all the changes far from far behind
We relieve the tension only to find out the master's name
Down at the end, round by the corner
Close to the edge, just by a river
    Seasons will pass you by
I get up, I get down
Now that it's all over and done
Now that you find, now that you're whole
    [II Total Mass Retain]
My eyes convinced, eclipsed with the younger moon attained with love
It changed as almost strained amidst clear manna from above
I crucified my hate and held the word within my hand
There's you, the time, the logic, or the reasons we don't understand
Sad courage claimed the victims standing still for all to see
As armoured movers took approached to overlook the sea
There since the cord, the license, or the reasons we understood will be
Down at the edge, close by a river
Close to the edge, round by the corner
Close to the end, down by the corner
Down at the edge, round by the river
Sudden call shouldn't take away the startled memory
All in all, the journey takes you all the way
As apart from any reality that you've ever seen and known
Guessing problems only to deceive the mention
Passing paths that climb halfway into the void
As we cross from side to side, we hear the total mass retain
Down at the edge, round by the corner
Close to the end, down by a river
    Seasons will pass you by
I get up, I get down
[III I Get Up, I Get Down]
In her white lace, you could clearly see the lady sadly looking
Saying that she'd take the blame
For the crucifixion of her own domain
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
    Two million people barely satisfy
Two hundred women watch one woman cry, too late
The eyes of honesty can achieve
(She would gladly say it amazement of her story)
How many millions do we deceive each day?
(Asking only interest could be laid upon the children of her domain)
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
In charge of who is there in charge of me
(She could clearly see the lady sadly looking)
Do I look on blindly and say I see the way?
(Saying that she'd take the blame
For the crucifixion of her own domain)
The truth is written all along the page
(She would gladly say it amazement of her story)
How old will I be before I come of age for you?
(Asking only interest could be laid upon the children of her domain)
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
    [IV Seasons Of Man]
The time between the notes relates the color to the scenes
A constant vogue of triumphs dislocate man, so it seems
And space between the focus shape ascend knowledge of love
As song and chance develop time, lost social temperance rules above
    Ah, ah
Then according to the man who showed his outstretched arm to space
He turned around and pointed, revealing all the human race
I shook my head and smiled a whisper, knowing all about the place
On the hill we viewed the silence of the valley
Called to witness cycles only of the past
And we reach all this with movements in between the said remark
Close to the edge, down by the river
Down at the end, round by the corner
    Seasons will pass you by
Now that it's all over and done
Called to the seed, right to the sun
Now that you find, now that you're whole
    Seasons will pass you by
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down

To tell the truth, I avoided these long Yes songs even when I was younger because I didn't want to take the time to know what's in them. Since I got older (much older) I have to kick myself for wasting all this time.

This composition regularly reduces me to tears.
It sometimes makes me feel like warm spring day lying in the grass next to a crystal clear lazy river, then a you hear rumbling and chaos. Its a flash flood, hits like a tsunami, it brings down house sized boulders and huge pieces of glacier tossing giant redwoods in the torrent. You get swept up by it totally at the mercy of the torrent. You find yourself surfacing wondering how you made it and clamber onto a floating tree and sweep further downstream but somehow safe. The sun comes out and you feel part of the flow finally the journey ends in a soft delta you make it to the bank and try to take in just what happened.
Yes were and are the be all and end all of prog rock, musicianship, composition recording engineering its on another level. Glad you guys got the trip.

If you really want to understand “Close To The Edge”, you have to understand the album that came before it (Fragile). Every member had thier “showcase” track, with tracks that they all played together on. My opinion has always been: Yes were ramping up to something on “Fragile”, then it actually happened on “Close To The Edge”. The track itself is a series of “movements”, but I don’t think it was meant to be “jarring”. I do agree that all of it was intentional, but not in a “Zappa” type of way. This track breaks you down at the beginning with chaos, then builds you back up. It was Yes proving what they were capable of, and setting a timeless benchmark that all other prog epics will be judged against. They had the chops, the arrangement and the production. But, it all started with “Fragile”. Now go check out “Supper’s Ready” by Genesis.

Can they pull that off live? Oh yeah. 4 guys on instruments and 1 guy singing. That amount of density. Note for note. Effect for effect. Nuance for nuance. Any day of the week. No extra musicians, no tape, no sampling, no vocorders, no electronic help of any kind. Analog only back then. Search Close To The Edge Live on You Tube. Select the 1972 version. That's from their original Close To The Edge tour right after the album release. Astounding. Other amazing tracks as good as this? And You And I, Perpetual Change, Ritual, Gates Of Delirium, To Be Over, Parallels, Awaken...... Actually, they released 6 classic albums in 4 years - from 1971 to 1975 that are all amazing. The Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge, Tales Of Topographic Oceans , Relayer and Going For The One. I haven't stopped listening to all of them often for 45 years. Since high school. I've seen them 5 times. These guys are MUSICIANS and COMPOSERS. This band will be studied in music schools for centuries if we last that long. They are a truly remarkable band.

That's exactly the amazing thing about YES, is the studio albums were great but somewhat flat and angular compared to how organically the music flowed in their Live performances. In hindsight I can rarely ever listen to these 1st 3 albums. Yessongs LIVE smashes the shit out of those songs, and have become my personal Definitive Editions

Really, to appreciate what "Jarring" really can be, you should check out something from one of the early Industrial Bands such as Throbbing Gristle, or Coil. The latter's _Unreleased Themes of Hellraiser_ Clive Barker rejected as, "Coil's the only band who's made my bowels churn" or something similar. What Yes did in "Close to the Edge" reminds me more of some of the discordant jazz or even classical music.
I've been promoting "Gates of Delirium" to these young chaps since their first reaction to Yes. Adding my voice to the chorus promoting this again!

As stated earlier, the song to listen to is Awaken. This song is "Yes" firing on all cylinders. I've read and listened to many interviews by members of "Yes" and the majority find that "Awaken" is one of their most proudest moments. I saw them perform this song live back in 1977. It was one of those songs that left the audience stunned. There was a long pause after the performance by the audience as if they needed to be brought back to earth, followed by a standing ovation this was more like a "bravo" applause over the typical rock show "whoo hoo" applause. It was the moment that changed my view of music for the rest of my life. I went home, and threw away my Ted Nugent, Foghat, and Kiss albums and never looked back. This song is transformative in more ways than one. Please give it a listen.

He doesn't sing in falsetto, which can hit the notes, but just doesn't have the 'quality', and he can do things that another singer couldn't do in falsetto. He'll never be able to sing like Tom Waits, but he's is absolute master at what he does.

In light of your reaction, and some of the comments, I feel it necessary to share this. Hope it helps.
“"Close to the Edge" is symphonic not in instrumentation but in overall structure. Throughout four breathtaking movements, Yes introduce and recapitulate melodic themes, change tempos and keys, and approach their instruments (as they usually do) with a studiousness largely reserved for an orchestral setting. But this piece is never stuffy. In fact, it's the most nakedly emotional song in their catalog. Anderson’s vocal in the "I Get Up, I Get Down" section - building from hoarse low notes to a full-throated melismatic peak - taps into a primal spirituality amplified by the wheeze of Wakeman’s church organ...
    It’s Prog Perfection”
    -- Ryan Reed
“It is the centerpiece of the greatest album of all time, prog or otherwise. It is one of the best examples of rock musicians adopting symphonic ideals and really making it work naturally. It is incredibly emotional, and is really a timeless work of art that can stand on its own.”
    -- Matt Barnhill

Wow! Wasn't expecting you to get to this so soon! Probably my favorite song ever. You can't possibly appreciate it completely on first listen so give it a few more shots. Personally, I think it's best by yourself or with one other appreciative person, hit a little bourbon or a little weed, and kick back. This was written by Jon Anderson and Steve Howe and started out as several different songs that they wove together. Anderson is said to have gotten his initial inspiration from reading Lord of the Rings and listening to the classical composer Jean Sibelius, especially Symphony #7. I always felt the chaotic intro fit with the title and the artwork in that it's some fractured other-world and this was a journey taking you dangerously Close to the Edge only to pull back in time to discover the beauty of this world. Jon and Steve apparently liked the idea of opening with an improvisational jam having been influenced on a previous tour opening for the Mahavishvnu Orchestra (with John McLaughlin), and amazing jazz-rock fusion band. The I Get Up, I Get Down middle section was written by Howe and to me it always feels like being in an enormous cavern because of the ethereal music combined with the dripping water. Both Steve's and Rick's work on this album is just amazing. I think the Hammond B3 organ solo is my favorite bit by Rick Wakeman and I'm a huge fan of his. Also, this was actually very popular at the time and was their biggest commercial success hitting #3 on the charts in the US and #4 in the UK. Pretty sure Chris was playing his Rickenbacker 4001 fretted bass here, he was just a big guy with strong hands and an exceptional player and made all those slides sound smooth. As for his tone, the main processing was multiple serial compressors (I think I read he had 3 in a row). I've read that he and their engineer/producer Eddie Offord had worked on getting the sound Chris wanted for a very long time when they first started out. The tone comes mostly from the Ric pickups which have a lot of treble (which he enhanced by cranking the treble tone up) and then they just compress the hell out of it. Also, he cranked up the input to get some distortion from the tube amp. I think he used Ampeg amps, but don't quote me on that.
So next, I would stick with this album, but a very different song: "And You and I". Very cool song, much lighter and a radio edit got a lot of airplay and charted.
Thanks for doing this amazing song. Listen again and you'll keep hearing more of what's going on and appreciate it more with each listen.
Stay safe, stay smart, stay healthy
    Peace from 'sheltering-in-place SF!

You need to listen to "Awaken". It is a spiritual journey.

Awaken stills blows me away every time I listen to it. You literally have to multi task your ears to enjoy what each instrument is doing. Awesome musical masterpiece! The opening 3 minutes is amazing. These guys should do that one for sure

I was in college in 1970 and taking a Music Appreciation class. I walked in one day and saw a friend and the professor hauling in the biggest stereo set up I have ever seen. My friend said come here for a minute. We went and burnt one and came back. The prof turned over the class to my friend and he turned up the volume and dropped the needle on this. I put my head down. I was an immediate fan! He is still a friend, though 800 miles away. 30 some years later I did the same thing for my son. He's a fan too. I listened to your comments after afterward. It is 50 years later and I still bust it out once in a while.
