I remember these steps. Went to saint vincent -saint mary high school a few years ago, and while i was a junior, my akron local history class cane here and we cleaned the steps during the class time. It was mainly peeling compacted leaves off the steps and pulling weeds from the dirt area in the middle of the steps, but some people had thrown some wooden stuff down from the top of the steps. There was an entire intact wooden chest and weeds everywhere.
Thanks for showing the mural the West Hill Neighborhood Organization unveiled in 2023!! Hope you have a chance to visit our wonderful neighborhood of West Hill again in the spring.
When I graduated from college, I lived on Walnut, a brown three-story building on your right when you get to the top. The Steps have been cleaned up since then. The hill you talked about being so steep is Bates Street, AKA Cadilac Hill. It was used by the local dealer to test the cars as they arrived.
hi Jim there is a very interesting cemetery just around the corner from there ( Glendale cemetery ) that I think you would really like walking around it
I lived in Akron when my oldest son was little to finish up school at Kent. My son asked me about the Hoban sign on the hill by the interchange and I told him it was an all boys school that I was going to send him to since they had a ho- ban going on there... it's a running joke every time we pass the hill, 3 sons later 😆

Check the cemetery out, it's called Glendale and it has a lot of Akron and barberton folks buried in it and look up the story about how it blew up, my neighbor was one of the two cops sitting in the cop car that threw the cigarette out that blew the cemetery up.

WPA and the CCC did really great work

Great place. I was gonna mention ad well.
Akron in the early 1900s was a beautiful, beautiful city, and it was extremely extremely wealthy.
The top, is about thirty yards from my front door. I/we've planted a lot of native plants over the years, and even strawberries once!
