  • In this episode of our radio series collaboration with BBC, "The Way I See It," human rights lawyer and social justice activist Bryan Stevenson joins us in front of a group of paintings by Jacob Lawrence. “Migration Series” (1940-41) depicts the reality of the Great Migration and, as Stevenson puts it, ”describes the full power that art can have in creating a new relationship to really big ideas like freedom and equality. What emerges in this work,” he says, “is a clear call for a new relationship with what it means to be treated fairly, what it means to be seen as equal, and what justice requires.”

Whenever I see a Jacob Lawrence posting, I want to add something to his legacy. When I was an art student at the University of Washington in the Seventies, I had a cranky art teacher who insisted that he knew what was art and what was not. I was not convinced. While discussing this with the Dean of the Art School, a man stuck his head through the door and said, "I'll take him on", meaning he agreed to tutor me one-on-one for that quarter. Mr. Lawrence was the most generous, encouraging, inspiring professor of my entire college experience. He was a great artist AND a great teacher.

I always enjoy listening to ppl who aren't involved in the art industry talk about art.

“Migration Series” was something I was most looking forward to seeing with mum own eyes on our last trip to NYC in Dec 2019. Thank you for sharing this.
