I was lucky enough to have had personal tutorials with Jacob Lawrence who was then a Professor of Art at the University of Washington when I was a student there. He was the sweetest, most open person, very encouraging and supportive. I was in the middle of a verbal complaint with the Dean of the Art Department about a teacher who pretended to be able to know what art was and wasn't, and who was dismissing my efforts. In the midst of this discussion, Jacob stuck his head in the door and said, "I'll take him on (as his student)". We had twice weekly sessions together. I feel so fortunate to have been able to work with him.

You are indeed very lucky to have worked with him. As you have recognised, it is very rare to find the two qualities of great artist and great teacher in one person. Jacob Lawrence had both qualities in abundance.

Thank you for this insightful documentary. What surprises me most about Jacob Lawrence's art is the consistency throughout his long life. So many artists experiment with different styles through their career, Jacob's work was always dynamic, bold, graphic and thought provoking while while still capturing life around him and telling the story of the people he painted. Genius!

Brilliant job, Paul! While I had seen his Olympia piece before, I was not previously aware of his name, like some music I'm fond of from the 60s & 70s, which were my childhood years. Passionate and meaningful musical works, much like Lawrence's creations. What a blessing that he found a pro arts & diversity commander during his military service, who re-assigned him to live that tragic time out in his truth. Nigeria seems to have been exactly what the doctor ordered, precisely at the moment Lawrence most needed it. I'm glad he found a way to go and stay as long as suited him. Honors can indeed be a two-edged sword. I'm grateful he was so prolific and skilled so we have plenty of his work to enjoy and learn from. Have you considered including a link to his foundation in the description for this video or an artist resources page on your site? I look forward to more diverse artist coverage like this.

Great, I did really enjoy this video. I don't know Jacob Lawrence's work though I must have seen some over the course of my lifetime. After this 'exposé' I hope I'll never NOT see it again if I'm in a gallery containing any. Where is there any in Britain? This merits another watch or two by me since I was constantly stopping to look at the photographs and paintings, occasionally, sadly, obscuring each other and both of equal interest.Well done for another great piece of informative video work in itself. I'd like to stand in front of some of these paintings.

TYsM for this episode on Jacob Lawrence. really sad, let down, & upsetting that i never heard this amazing artist's name, nor saw any of his paintings in any of the 4 Western Art History classes i took back in the day. i have learned more about 20th century pioneer artists from youtube smh. well, thankfully back then (late 90s) classes only cost $13/unit. amazing. i paid cash for my classes back then! 20 yrs doesnt seem like THaT long ago, but if i say i paid $40 per 3 credit course, one would guess more than 2 decades had passed.

In the time that it took for me to watch this video, And to see 1 Modernist masterpiece after another, this man took the spot amongst the very top artists of the whole of the Modernist movement- imho. He stands shoulder- to- shoulder with Picasso, and rises above Many of his more famous contemporaries.

This was refreshing. I had heard about Jacob Lawrence, but always kind of in passing. This deep dive into his life really is remarkable, hence I had to comment on it. The one thing that never seems to be acknowledge about him and those like him is they have a style that is influential in and of itself. The idea of primitivism never seems to be an issue for people like Picasso, and it should be seen as nothing more than a stylistic choice here. Looking at all the examples of his work it resonates throughout.
The best part was his trips to Nigeria. It was like he was headed to the well again to refill his bucket.
Odd how he saw such success and Augusta Savage was not able to enjoy the same.

I live in England, but you are right it does seem odd that he had such success and held such prestigious posts at a time when Black Americans were fighting for equality and civil rights. I think it says a lot about his character and determination. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. Cheers

I see much of Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica” coming from Jacob Lawrence’s work.
Picasso had been greatly influenced by Lawrence as well as other Black artists and African spiritual relics of sculptures and masks.
Something Picasso was strained to share and enlighten the public about.

Picasso was influenced by African art, particularly through his cubist period, but not by Lawrence I'm afraid, who wasn't born until long after the cubist period ended. Jacob Lawrence was only 19 when Guernica was painted and had not produced anything, by that age, of the significance of his later work, so I doubt Picasso was even aware of his existence. Cheers

I thought Jean Michel Basquiat had earned that "1st Black Artist..." distinction. Recognized by two American Presidents? Wow. Great content. Glad I subscribed!
