    Great video. I think the Zf users would just like a simplified Auto ISO implementation. Without sacrificing our precious function buttons. Just enable Auto ISO under c in the ISO dial and when not under c, follow the ISO indicated. So simple.

      Actually they have currently an even better function, but not for Auto-Mode. In the ISO Menu you can choose which value should come, when you put ISO dial to C. Which is actually great, but for some reason, you can’t choose Automatic. Maybe it’s a bug, but the rest works perfectly

    Thank you for the clarification on this. This confirmed my conclusion on the clear misstep.
    The fact that a complicated video like this has to be created shows that Nikon is looking at this the wrong way. I have used fuji and Leica cameras in total for almost 15 years and never have I had to think or Google how to override the iso function.
    I just picked up the Zf and it is fantastic except for this one clear flaw. If I have a C function, it’s a custom function. Period. If I have manual ISO dials, they should take priority over any C function regardless of the PASM setting.
    Having to set up other custom buttons just to override the C setting to allow me to use the manual dials does not many any logical sense

    This doesn't fix the issue. The dial should over ride auto iso. Also, switching to manual mode should also disable auto iso. Nikon made bad choices with this implementation.

      Auto ISO switching is so stupit on the ZF. On C you should have the option to switch on Auto iso just like the xt5.

    it would be enough for Nikon to insert the ISO dial Mode function into the ISO management menu. 2 options: a) normal mode b) analogic mode. Normal Mode for modern nikon philosophy, Analogic Mode for Fuji Style (or ancient Nikon analogic mode)

    Sure. We want you to do 2-3 steps that should be 1 step. It may not be a “bug” because it may work as designed, but it’s a poor user experience.
    The simple fix, is to allow the ISO Settings function to work outside of C at least to toggle AutoISO settings. But the right fix is to disable AutoISO when you rotate of of C.
    They need to fix this.

  • @csc-photo

    It's such a cool camera. And I mean, that's how I use Auto-ISO anyway on my other Z cameras - manual shutter, manual aperture, auto-ISO and then exposure comp set to the control ring (or if the lens has no control ring, I use the ISO button & dial). I love that this Zf has a dedicated and smaller dial for exp comp. BUT - moving the ISO dial off of "C" really should kick the camera out of auto-ISO and pass control back to the dial. Then when it's back on C, it should just jump back into auto-ISO / where you last left off.

    People who complain about Nikon implementation doesn't fall under ZF target audience.
    There are camps to the retro camera market, there are those that buy these kinds of camera for the experience of analog. The clicks, the aperture ring, the Film Simulations. These people who would be happy with a Fuji or a Leica.
    And then there's Nikon, where function is still above experience. Those who want a nice looking camera but can sacrifice some analog feels for efficiency. We use AUTO ISO and the ability to quickly change AUTO ISO setting with the top dial is absolutely golden. We don't want Nikon to do as Fuji does that make the top dial Manual ISO function.
    It's a cloudy day and I want good shutter, I flick the dial to 400 and let auto iso do the rest, it's low light on the streets, flick it 3200 or 6400. It's absolutely the best auto iso implementation I've used and people is calling Nikon to.. make it like a Fuji Manual ISO? No thanks! I like the functionality of Auto ISO

  • @carlmcneill1139
    @carlmcneill1139 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    You are correct that this is a different camera. It's listed as a retro camera but to me it's more of a street photography camera. It just happens to do way more. I think I understand why Nikon chose to do it this way. It may take 2 steps to go into auto ISO. Why not reverse those 2 steps to take it out of auto ISO. Some people like to shoot in manual mode with auto ISO turned on. I don't like exposure compensation. If you forget to change it back to 0 it could give you results later that you don't like. And sometimes the light changes too fast to keep up with so you need auto ISO. If the camera reverted back to manual ISO when you turned the knob you would lose auto ISO when you want to shoot in manual mode. I shoot this way a lot. I want to be in control of my aperture and shutter speed but sometimes I'm ok with the camera controlling the ISO but with limits on how high it can go. Does the zf not have an "I" menu where you can select what's in that menu so you can quickly go to it? You could have it there so you don't have to go into the menu.

  • @magicshutters
    @magicshutters 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The ISO dial over rides auto ISO settings on one way. Suppose you set the max iso sensitivity to 6400 but sudeenly you find that you might need more than that. You can set the dial to higher iso than 6400 and your auto iso max sensitivity is now the dial sensitivity, reducing a step tp get into the menu system.

    If it's not a bug, it's a very poorly implemented design choice. Nobody is going to accidentally turn the ISO dial away from 'C' because the dial locks at 'C'. It's perfectly logical for someone to reach for the ISO dial to change to a specific ISO value and override the computer. The whole purpose of the dials on this style of camera is because people prefer using them to control the camera. Users shouldn't be forced to remember to turn off Auto ISO before they can regain control of the ISO dial. And by the way, if you accidentally turn the ISO dial before turning off auto ISO, you must first return the dial to 'C' in order to turn off auto ISO; you can't turn off auto ISO if the ISO dial is not on 'C'. That's just crazy!

    Reviewers should read the quick start guide, at minimum (and should be the full manual if they derive substantial income from the reviews) before creating the review. I like the Fuji implementation more, but a quick read will let anyone know how the Nikon Zf implemented it. That does not change the fact that Nikon made a mess with it. The Nikon way is more flexible (you can quickly recall your settings after going to auto) but it's contrary to human intuition. It's like the Windows 95 registry.

    Auto ISO in A-Mode should work likthe following . The Iso dial deflects the max iso, the speed dial sets the desired minimal shutter. That would be great rather that having to dive in 2 levels into the menu.

    One ‘shortcut’ is set Auto ISO to 200 then any selection of ISO dial over 200 will raise the Auto ISO limit to that value on the dial. Weakness here is loss of ISO 100.

    Frames, it seems some people want the camera to work in ways it wasn’t designed to. I’ve seen some comment that the dial should override the menu system, some are saying it’s a flaw but, from the Reference Guide it isn’t configured to work that way. First thing I did when I saw videos and comments, I checked the guide saw there is. I flaw but, many people are doing that, they want to not get the camera as it doesn’t work the way they feel it should. Love your explanation, let’s hope others will accept it as it is and have fun with it.

    Great explanation for a ducked up ISO implementation logic. Nikon needs to fix this by simply making C as auto iso default . Dial works like it should. Why the heck are they wasting space for a dial? For looks? Just plain dumb. If you need to make a whole video on the Zf iso implementation, right there you know their ISO implementing is a total mess. If I make a video on how to use the new brakes on a car, then that’s just f’ed up.

    But is Zf really that much different experience and more retro to something like A7 series because let say the A7RV, it has 2 unlabelled big dials on top too which you can map to shutter speed and ISO dials and their lenses a lot have aperture ring too, the camera body's EVF head has the sharp prism looking shape too, the body looks not much different but just has a better bigger grip, plus it has the useful practical 4 ways screen, just attach it with a manual lens and you will get similar and better experience in same time too?

  • @bfs5113
    @bfs5113 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I disagree with Nikon's specification (or a bug not caught by the testers) on how C functions on exit. It should re-initialize the ISO dial routine and if necessary, execute any housekeeping that include exiting out from AUTO ISO. The C on the ISO dial should only serve as a toggle switch between hard and soft ISO selection and must be mutually excluded. Otherwise, it leads to the present confusion.
    As well, it isn't a two step procedure but a selection option. Thus, the user can either use the ISO dial to select an ISO value directly or SWITCH the ISO selection task to the camera by moving the dial to C. Once it is on C, the camera should function as a regular MILC without an ISO dial. But on exit from C, the Zf is no longer a regular MILC and must return back to the dial only ISO selection.
    Also, adding (A) Auto ISO on the dial as a toggle switch may improve user satisfaction for some, if not many but not with those who dislike too much auto this and that. 🙂

Like you say then moving out of C to the dial the camera still stays in auto not the values on the dial . To turn off auto ISO use the function button and turn the front dial this will turn the camera on and off auto iso . You can the use the dial .

  • @yophotodude7693
    @yophotodude7693 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    That’s not my problem. The problem is the moment you change the ISO dial out of C, Nikon disables the ability to toggle AutoISO on and off without going into the menu or adding ISO Settings to the My Menu. You cannot add the ISO Settings to a button and change AutoISO on or off. It works in C but not a set ISO.
    It would make sense to have the camera disable AutoISO when you rotate away from C. I’m dialing in a specific ISO so give that to me.

    Why will someone hit subscribe? 1 am in the morning is "in the morning", it is not "post noon". That would be 1 pm.
    You repeatedly show the same manual ISO dial. Anyone who is watching such videos knows the dial after showing it once.
    You shoot from far and are asking someone to focus on a 3-inch screen. It only shows a blurry image. We could not see the Auto ISO blinking. It was just a blur.

      Man plz don’t hit the subscribe button. I have not put a gun on your head. You’re watching a free video. If you saw an ad, more than 50% of it goes to TH-cam. Don’t make a fool out of yourself with random ass comment that makes no sense. Why will someone hit sub? There are plenty who thought they should. But there is only one idiot who’s asking this absolute rank stupid question. Go buy the camera and see for yourself how the auto ISO blinks. And kindly don’t watch my videos. You paid for my camera, set up and time Kya? If not don’t come and complain like I owe you something.

    Nikon makes it too complicated unnecessarily. Never had one camera this counter intuitive on such a widely used function! Never heard complaints about the ISO dial operation like this big on other comparable cameras / systems! It's the Nikon designer's logic vs. most users. Why reinvent the wheel?

    If I have AUTO ISO selected in camera (dial set to 'C'), I don't want the dial to override that. I want to turn AUTO ISO OFF in camera and THEN use the dial. I don't want to accidentally bump the ISO dial and lose AUTO ISO in the middle of shooting.

      I promise you that you won't accidentally bump the ISO dial and lose AUTO ISO on this camera. The dial locks at 'C', and requires both a finger push and twist to break away from 'C'.

      @@turkturkleton4278 You're right. I just got the Zf yesterday and haven't played with it that much. However, I did just now add ""Auto ISO sensitivity control" to "My Menu", and left the dial at 100. Turn off control and ISO goes to 100 and the dial changes it, turn it on, it's in Auto and dial has no effect. No problem there for me.

    Your videographer is doing a terrible job man!! Ask your videographer to concentrate on the camera and keep the focus on you and shift the focus on the product ( in this case the camera) when you want to show it to the viewers. Ask your videographer to look at you through the camera and it will solve the problem.
    Thank you

      Haha well she’s my wifey! And she never misses with a Nikon or a Sony. Fuji however… my guess is she’s not gonna pamper the Fuji and treat it equally

    Horrendous design choice. Allow C to operate like A. The dial should moving out of C should revert to manual ISO. So dumb, so so so very dumb. This nonsense is stopping me buying this camera. If I want to use the camera without the screen, I have to use the EVF to see what ISO I’m in. It makes no sense, and poor design like this irritates me.

    looks like you are more confused than your audience,... when in Auto ISO the ISO dial is invalid, when in manual ISO direct ISO values by ISO dial or ISO values selected by rotating front/rear dial while on "C" in the ISO dial..... where is the confusion ?
