Detailed update on low moving into NZ + Pacific Islands update

  • Westland is in for a deluge, so too possibly the surrounding areas including Nelson and Takaka. But for many other places the incoming wet weather will be welcome after a very dry start to 2024.
Sub-tropical or mild northerlies will continue to blow through - becoming windiest on Thursday.
By Friday the low moves into the West Coast and falls apart - with a west to south west change for NZ on Saturday, then high pressure on Sunday.
We break down the rain for Westland in as much detail as we can - and show a rainfall map for NZ through until this Sunday. Keep up to date with MetService official warnings and watches.
Finally, the last part of the video (as we do every Tuesday now) is dedicated to the South Pacific islands - a quick animation of the next 7 days ahead and a 7 day rainfall animation to make sense of all those messy daily showers.

Who else wishes the weather forecasts on TV were explained this clearly and logically? As well as Phillip Duncan's most excellent and efficient hand gestures not the 'what the heck does that mean' hand flourishes on TV.

The accuracy of recent forecasts has been awful. As I sit typing this, the WW page claims 2% chance of rain with just 70% cloud cover. It's raining quite steadily. The same was the case on Friday -- not so good when you've arranged having your roof replaced based on a forecast of no rain until Wednesday 😞 I might go back to using the rock on a string hanging from our apple tree 🙂 as a forecasting tool.
Clearly, the weather is quite *un*predictable right now.

Just like Australian Bureau of meteorology.... Telling farmers droughts coming... Farmers sold stock . This was an anti farming agenda it take many many years to build stock levels up 👎🏼

Reading weather maps I would say any one living west coast South Island needs to keep an eye on the rain. An ince or more per hour coming down right now on the west hill slopes and up on the high ridges, An Inch an hour is a foot per half day and you can imaging just how much that will swell those mountain rivers and fill yp hundreds of steep narrow gorges. Mud and rock may also be brought down. Luckily the Island is relativly narrow and so the water won't be long before reaching the sea. It is also going to be coming down on the eastern side. Just saying. Tell me if I am totally wrong and that a foot of water per 12 hours is just nothing to keep alert of.
