  • Installing a big brake kit can be an easy brake upgrade. In this video I will show you how to install a big brake kit, bleed the new calipers, and flush the brake fluid. This is a front big brake kit using Wilwood calipers, pads, and rotors. Also we are installing new brake lines for our kit. I will also be testing this big brake kit to see how they perform.

    Another great video Charles. One additional step I would always recommend is to use a dial test indicator to check that runout is within tolerance when installing new rotors. If it's not, and you know you cleaned the mating surfaces well, simply rotating the rotor round to the next stud hole can improve the readings obtained.

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s a really good idea. And you can get them for like $30. Lol. I don’t think most people will do that, but I love the idea of reclocking the rotor

    Thank you, thank you, thank you for making sure to talk about bedding in the pads. NO ONE, I mean NO ONE around me, even the places you pay to do your brakes, bed in the pads. How do you know? Look at the mileage when you get back in the vehicle. If there’s only 1-2 miles more than when you dropped it off, they did NOT bed in the pads. I have cooked too many brand new rotors because of not bedding them in; sometimes glazing the pads in the process.. BUT, this extra attention means I have stopped in an emergency stop when I would not have been able to before, because I took the proper time to heat cycle and bed in the brakes.
    Also, as I was teaching a teen to replace his brakes, I told him, “If we test out the system, now, and something is wrong, or something breaks, we can fix it. Plus, we find out in a controlled environment, and not in an emergency situation.”

    • @LukeEdward
      @LukeEdward 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a follow up - today I escaped with only some paint scrapes, instead of a complete fender ad bumper destruction because my brakes - properly bedded - were working perfectly when someone turned right into me.
      BED. YOUR. BRAKES. IN. PEOPLE.

    General question. When would you recommed upgrading the master cylinder when installing big brake kits.

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That totally depends on the brake setup you go with. In some cases you will need to.

      @Thomas Rock yes

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Thomas Rock It pretty much depends on the total length of the brake line, so it often depends on the line routing and where the ABS unit is. There may be more variables specific to Audi though that I don't know about.

    • @michaelblacktree

      If the new calipers have a different bore size, then the master cylinder bore size needs to change to match it. Otherwise, you could run into issues.

    Charles! thank you for all the videos and tutorials over the past 3 years. You are amazing. I really learned much watching the big brake upgrade video. Charles, I am confused to the whole Offset quandary. So, offset I understand is the distance from center wheel to the wheel hub. Now having ADD and never finishing my mechanical engineering degree program at Texas Tech, I cannot fully grasp determining the proper offset. So, I do want to purchase the Wilwood brake kit, but I want to purchase 18 inch x 10 wheels before. How do I determine the proper offset? I just struggle with this. Mike

    Your best bang for your buck for a BBK for Gen7 GTI is the Stock GTI PP rotors with Porsche Macan/Audi Q5 3.0 4 piston bembo calipers. Direct bolt on and very cheap, you can get the calipers for around $250 each. I had to get custom length SS brake lines made but those cost $60. Awesome stopping power.

  • @williamwallace45

    Hey Charles, I recently replaced my brake pads on my Alcon six pot front brakes, the front right outer pad was completely worn, to the metal. The inner had about 3-4mm, and the pads on the left caliper were 4-5mm. Watching your video I taught that the front right caliper wasn't aligned properly to the rotor, and that is what caused the pad to wear down uneavenly. I was told that when a car is always driven driver only, the front right caliper always brakes harder especially when ABS comes up. What do you think?

  • @miketeeveedub5779

    Unless the rear brakes are drums, the rear factory discs are perfectly fine, even in light-duty racing situations. I'd definitely suggest a performance brake pad upgrade though.
    Spending +$1000 on rear disc brakes upgrades provides very little return on performance. You'd be better off spending that money on other upgrades (ECM, tires, suspension, etc).
    However, front brakes (which provide well over 75% of the braking of the vehicle) should DEFINITELY be upgraded if there are any significant engine power upgrades. That goes without saying.
    Great video as always HumbleMechanic - thanks!

      Yep. I’ll be doing new calipers(OEM mk4) and lines on the rear. I have rotors ready to go. My plan was to start with OEM pads and see how she does. Then move to something more aggressive if needed.
      So many people do BBK and never see the benefits other than looks. That’s cool with me. But HP pads and proper tires are a better use of the money

    Just recently bought the same pressure bleeder, ran out of brake fluid in the bleeder as I was bleeding the clutch. Sucked air into the system. Do you know why this happens, even if there is brake fluid left in the reservoir? And why doesn't this happen inside the bleeder aswell?
    Got it to work with some more brake fluid, but this behavior is very strange to me..

    Hello - My '09 Tiguan has rear bias brakes. The strange thing about this setup is that VW kept the traditional rotor sizing in place (large on front, smaller on rear). My rear brakes wear A LOT faster vs front because of the OEM rear bias. Is there a good recommended REAR brake upgrade to increase size of ROTOR and possibly extend life of pads?

    Great vid Humble. Any tips for removing front caliper pistons for rebuild? Everything I've read says either compressed air or grease gun. Some event suggest bicycle tyre pump. What would the issue be with pumping it out via brake pedal? Use a piece of wood opposite it if it shoots out? Other than mess of course.

    • @suj1945
      @suj1945 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did the first one a few days ago. I did indeed use the brake pedal to get the very stiff piston out. Doesn't make a huge mess if you do it slowly and constantly check for when the piston is finally free.

      Im not sure if it caused, or exposed an issue with brake bias. But on hard stop rear brakes lock. Prop valve is built into the ABS module so it may be an ABS issue. I also found after digging the rear wheel speed sensors were not transferred over. Makes me thing I have exposed an issue with the car more than caused one.

    Isnt it advisable to empty to brake reservoir to get as much as possible of the old fluid out of the system without pushing it all the way through? Also, shouldnt you start at the farthest caliper and continue by going to the next farthest and so on?
    What are the wheel requirements to fit these things? are 15" fine or are 16" necessary?

    Surely you should take the old fluid out of the reservoir before putting new in. I always take as much as possible out with a turkey baster and put fresh in immediately. You could do that and THEN hook up your pressure bleeder.
