Yeah I find that dangerous. Especially where I live. I don't own a pair, I don't even own earbuds. Of course it's funny when girls jump because they don't hear you coming or they almost get hit by a cyclist because they don't hear the warning of which side they are approaching on.
Yeah and i also consider listening to music while running as "cheating" cuz when u dont have ur headphones on then its much easier to give in and to say fuck it :D
i have been running for a few months now and its really helped me. I am 56 yrs old and enjoy running (not particularly fast). its just good to get out and forget about the stress of work for a while. thanks for your tips and advice, i will try a run without listening to my podcasts and see how that goes.
The concept of reducing friction around anything is a great way to approach life, in general. Being prepared/thinking ahead and anticipating your own needs and also having something too look forward to (for me it is a snack and a nap), make those hard training days something to enjoy. I also found that I tend to enjoy the strategy involved in planning ahead, so that is also something that reduces the friction.
Choosing to not run with headphones on my long runs has been an absolute game changer for me and my mental health. rather than my runs filled with pounding techno i actually feel like my brain has the chance to process things that have been annoying me that week and the ability to just have time to be calm and present in the moment.
Congrats guys 👏. Thanks Fergus enjoyed this video. Im taking these steps on board: planning ahead and having a buddy to chat with. First long run is still a way off for me, im recovering from major health issues but ill get there. Keep up the great work.
I did 28km off night shift yesterday. Can't believe how good it felt given it's the long run of this build. Next one I might head into the national park near me and run the last part of a trail called The Oaks. Long grinding uphill for 14km to the Helipad. Then turn around and cruise downhill with a steep causeway climb to finish.
It's been years since I last wore headphones don't miss them the sound of nature is so much better. One more thing I would add to the planning list is checking the weather forecast.
you get more tuned into the run. it becomes a moving meditation where you are just focusing on breathing and stride. If I wear headphones I get distracted with work/life stuff. @@na-dk9vm
Congrats guys and always a inspiration. I visited new york in feb this year and went for an amazing long run around 20km along the west side and looped through central park. It is fucking cold around the water! My long runs of late have only been between 10 and 15km but im flying solo this year for Christmas so im already planning my route, kit and nutrition. Think of doing a half around flat old Cambridge.
Great content! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Can you please recommend some brands/specific models of hydration bags? Nothing extremely fancy is needed.
My sincerest apologies Erin, you’re stuck with him for life now. (Congrats you two! Wishing you a lifetime of happiness and ridiculous hybrid athlete challenges!)
Friday's are for lower body secondary/variation sessions, long runs, and evening bruskis. Friday plan: AM: high bar squats 3x12 @ 315lbs (end of 12's block) , 3x8 deficit SLDL to RPE7 (find starting point for next block). PM: run 7.45 miles in sub 60 minutes.
Hi Fergus, I noticed you have stopped wearing vivobarefoots for your runs, what was the idea behind this please. What shoes do you currently run in as going from 0 drop to something like 6mm makes a noticeable difference to me. Thanks.
I’ve never actually ran in Vivos on roads (ever)! I’m in them all day every day, for hiking, and for short trail runs 🫡 I’m running in Altra Torins here!
Congratulations on getting married!! I always used to run with headphones and couldn’t run without them but a few weeks ago they died half way through the run and I actually enjoyed running without and now choose not to take them with me!
Don't worry, I don't own headphones nor* earbuds nor do I care to. When I go jogging or walking or even shopping my phone is at home. Or it is in the car.
My earphones are my running friend because my work schedule doesn't make sense to normal people (and I don't know how to make new human friends). Now what?

No headphone gang rise up. I never use them when running outside and I love it

I used to not either then found bone conduction "headphones" lets me hear everything on the road and my audiobooks!
Same…you miss some of most beautiful things about running with music in your ear..that sound of cadence tapping the tarmac is almost hypnotic
@@IamDannyM I love being able to really focus on my breathing. Keeps me relaxed and helps control my heart rate

Great video, lucky enough to live in the area of that run and at 51 training for my first marathon so some great tips to take onboard. 👍

Best advice, ditching the headphones. I followed your advice and it changed my running experience. I've since advised others and they felt same way,
What change did you experience by not using headphones??
