    The Pro Max 16 PoE and U7 Pro Max are definitely a bit overkill for the vast majority of home networks, this would be more prosumer than anything (though IK most of us prosumers with Ubiquiti gear end up with a UDM Pro/SE).
    Personally, I'm waiting for a refreshed UDR I can recommend to friends/family for their homes. If Ubiquit could release a 2.5 GbE capable UDR with on-board WiFi 7 and maybe 2-4 PoE ports with a similar storage system to what the Cloud Gateway Max has for cameras, that'd be the ultra Ubiquiti home network device. A 'UDR Pro Max', if you will.

      yep your dead on with those specs for a udr update that is exactly what i would like. or take the cloud gateway max add built in wifi and poe that would also work nicely. its a shame the new cloud gateway max doesnt have poe, i put one in my parents house but its a bit of a messy solution with either a poe switch or poe injectors, two/four poe prots would have made for a super clean install.

      I like his recommendations as simple and good for many years to come. I was originally waiting for a UDP since still no stock however I like the idea of not being limited to where it would have to sit, vrs AP in the center to best coverage. We are building a new/used home and will be able to run cables for the cameras and door station and not need many ports. Glad I didnt order the UDM as I could get it from Canada however I already have one at our current home as it was the original version years ago.

      I agree the video setup is overkill but the UDR is dated. I'd just a grab a UCM, POE inj and a U6 Pro.

    my favorite small home set up is Gateway Ultra-> TP-LINK unmanaged POE switch and 2-3 U6+ AP’s. perfect for anyone with up to gigabit fiber and can be upgraded with better/newer AP’s as needed. 99% of home networks don’t need a ubiquiti switch.
    i set my parents and our lakehouse up wish the setup above. parents have gig fiber, and the lake has star link.
    my personal network is a UDM-SE, USW-Pro-24-POE, 3 Flex mini switches, 4 G5 Bullets, G5 PTZ, G4 pro POE doorbell/poe chime, U6 mesh, and two U7 pro’s.

    Just set up my first home Unifi system. I went with the same Cloud Gateway Max No Storage, but figured the Lite 8 POE was going to be enough for me. I power a U6 Pro with the Lite 8 POE, and use three Flex Minis at points throughout the hours where I need to distribute wired connections.

    I get that Unifi gear is your go-to, but $877 for a 'small' home network doesn't strike me as a great price, though I guess it depends on how you define value and what you're looking to get out of it. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to get my hands on some of this stuff to mess around with, but for me, that price point just feels a bit over the top!

    Is there any good justification for splurging on the U7 Pro Max? I feel like the difference compared to the regular U7 Pro isn't likely enough for a small home setup. Also heck if you don't need Wifi 7 might even get a good deal on a U6 Pro or U6 Enterprise, which to me feels a lot more cost-effective. Sure the Pro lacks 6 GHz but considering we're talking a /small/ home, you'll likely be in good enough proximity that the 6 GHz speed advantages would hardly matter much. Also, depending on the deal you get, if your home is large enough to warrant it, you might even be able to score two U6 Pros for a similar price to a single U7 Pro Max-then just set them up each in their own corner of the home to provide better coverage.

    • @weldchip
      @weldchip หลายเดือนก่อน

      i have two u6 enterprise, a u7pro and a u7promax there is no appreciable difference in performance from what i can tell just in every day use, maybe in perfect conditions with perfect hardware/rf environment but in general day to day phone/laptop use you wont notice a thing and wont be lusting more performance.
      my new phone says its connected to wifi7 unifi also reports its wifi7 but it still tends to prefer the 5ghz band mostly even though all my access points are 6ghz capable . realistically within 30-50ft range of an access point its capable of delivering speeds comparable if not faster than wired 1gbps the only real advantage to the u7 pro max is it has a dedicated antenna to scan for conflicting channels where as the others periodically scan for conflicting channels.
      for the setup at my parents house i used a u6lr and even that provides more than adequate coverage and throughput for their browsing, streaming and grand kids devices etc.

    Looking to setup an access point for a small business that's 1500 sq ft. For the 6 GHz (U7 Pro Max) do you still need to setup a separate ssid? I was planning on going with the U6 Pro to keep things simple. Max number of clients would be about 25 on WiFi.

    Do cloud gateway max manages the routing part too? DHCP, NAT? thanks!

  • @thomas-NK

    I startet my network with a USW-Pro-Max-24 and now trying to figure out what router to choose. Wifi speeds I will just keep to wifi6 when I buy accesspoints later on cause all machines that need speed is connected with cable anyway.
    So I sort of want Dream Machine SE to have the option to have some Poe, but not sure how much I will be able to get cables around for it.
    I have a 24U Rack so rackmountable is no problem.
    But should I consider the cloud gateway max over the Dream Machine SE?
    The DM SE looks so much betyer in a rack than a Cloud Gateway Max, but also cost alot more😅

    This is a great video, but I feel its overkill for the averge home where very few, if any will be WiFi 7 devices, there is likely no need for Access or Conenct displays. This more a small "prosumer" starte kit rather than something the average home would need.

  • @SWeir-yo2mq
    @SWeir-yo2mq หลายเดือนก่อน

    Correct me if I'm wrong but the U7 AP's are not compatible with the protect all-in-one sensors as they don't have Bluetooth. This kind of limits the "Protect" application to basically cameras.

    Including a Pro Max 16 PoE switch is pretty punchy IMHO. For a small home network it'd be quite a hard sell in comparison to an Ultra 60W for anyone who isn't a complete technophile (I'd love one to add to my newly installed UCGMax!). Here in the UK it is really quite rare for homes to have any ethernet cabling unless built within the last five years. It's getting better and as soon as I hear there are plans for a home refurb I'll tell them to cable up wherever possible. Most clients don't get quite so excited about flashy lights on a switch as we do! 😆

    • @DanWalshTV
      @DanWalshTV หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I imagine he only included the Pro Max 16 PoE switch for the 2.5GbE uplink required by the U7 Pro Max. You're right though, the average home user would be plenty happy with the much cheaper gigabit switches and WAP, such as the Lite 8 PoE or Ultra 60W with a U6+ or U6 Mesh. Ubiquiti's current lineup simply does not justify the bump in price from gigabit to 2.5GbE for home users right now (though the Flex Mini 2.5G is a step in the right direction).
      He might consider $800 a great value to get into the Ubiquiti ecosystem but if I told the average home user that cost compared to their existing cheap router, they'd flip out. I have Ubiquiti pro gear at home and I love it, but I'm a technophile, it's not a setup I'd recommend to friends or family. For that, I'm anxiously awaiting a refreshed UDR, as that's way more home friendly for most people.

    • @airborneinferno
      @airborneinferno หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DanWalshTV I agree. I just managed to sell on my UDR to a client with an AP and a basic switch. Beyond that clients tend to baulk when compared the freebie router they are given by the ISP (even when I tell them they'd see me less if they went more Unifi!).
