  • Views taken in the Midlands in the final days of Class 20 action.
First - views of a shunt at Toton (also see other clips from this channel of the same shunt).
Then Doncaster - 20002 and 20022 shot at Doncaster in the cutting area - with some other notable members of the cast (47522) present also!
Next, we move on to Toton and a visit to the depot, showing 20s and other locos under overhaul and in and around the depot, before a final look at activities at Barrow Hill - at the time a centre of Class 20 action for coal services to Seymour, Bolsover and Markham.

Superb camera work, not jumping about all over the place like mine used to be and the best old Toton footage I've seen on the internet

Loved the opening sequence especially as the wagon sounds merges into the loco sound . Great picture quality for vhs too. Living nearby Toton was mecca for me and my mates in the late 70's early 80's

This is like being in a time machine being a barrow hill lad. I can hear alison moyet simple minds and roxy music on the radio in the garage i worked in rubbing down cars next to the railway in the 80's. The garage by the way was once the stables for the railway when they used horses. It's still there its now a roofing company.

Wow.....................the acceleration @ 20:56 is something to behold. Didn't know BR possessed such means of speed and motion way back in 1990!!

I seem to think the last BR class 20s were withdrawn around 1992.

I remember Class 20 quite well as a teenager around Bescot. They were a strange looking engine to me as in odd shaped. Why were there always in Pairs and rarely alone? Were they underpowered or something? Its puzzled me for years...

One of their nicknames was "wardrobes" for obvious reasons. The 20s were seen solo in their early days, and were often given tasks beyond their design capabilities as steam was being culled before suitable replacements were ready. However they were one of, if not *the* most successful of the modernisation plan diesels, so were worked in pairs on bigger jobs. They even did summer passenger runs from the East Midlands to Skegness where the lack of steam heating wasn't an issue (much!)
I read somewhere they were originally designed to be worked cab last, as drivers used to a boiler in front were concerned about track flicker, or maybe superstitious in the event of a collision. Whatever, they are nearly always shown cab front.

Also known as choppers. Which just seemed to suit them perfectly.

up until the beginning of the nineties we used to have four of them on the heavy coal trains running out of Liverpool docks. They made some noise.
