Interesting video from someone who used to go eel fishing in Sussex back in the late '70's. The late, great John Sidley was a _sort of idol_ as his big eel catches were legendary.
But I'm intrigued to find out *_why and how_* this twig rig works.
Back in the '70's, I used to use a red led light float that was powered by 2 small hearing aid batteries so bite detection was almost instant. And out of all the eels I ever caught, only one was deeply hooked and I was fishing for bream at the time and ledgering.

John Sidley was definitely an eel fishing legend 💪.
The twig rig ( eel fishing version 😉) was invented by Barry McConnell, it seems the eels feel the hard plastic tube that sits just above the hook and won't swallow the bait.
It really does work, every eel I've caught using this rig has been lip hooked 👌

Hello, very instructional video. One question: will a plastic stiff tube work as well as the carbon one? I have plenty if anti tangle pike stiff tube that I i could use. Thanks!

@@AnglingDirectTV thank you for your answer, I'm going to give it a try. Can this rig be used with a bolt maggot feeder, or just with a running rig? Sorry for the many questions, I want to make sure that if I do catch an eel it's gonna be safe.

Great tip / rig Phil, why dont you use the T-bar rig as you have shown in other films. The new rig is that just as effective as the T-bar rig for not deep hook them??

Quite simply i find the twig rig even better and more efficient at lip hooking eels.

Hi Michael,
You should still manage to hook up with the eels on a size 10. Maybe use slightly smaller baits to match the hook size, and also try and find the biggest size 10 hook you can 😉.

How do you cut the Carbon-twig?

I cut the carbon tube with either a very fine hack saw blade, or a serrated bread knife. I also like to tidy up the freshly cut edges with a piece of fine sand paper after I cut it.
