Prepper Tip: If you are interested, look into buying a dehumidifier, connect its drain to a 55 gallon container (connected to larger containers if you wish), and then using solar power you can pull water right out of the air for free thereafter. Throw a filter inline somewhere and you'll have some pure drinking water as well.

I'm thinking this will be your "forever" home site. So, all, and anything you spend on this place, be it equipment, drilling a Well, whatever will all be an investment in your future. Remember as someone has already suggested, be sure the cabin is well elevated, just in case you have rising water from that creek. You're both young and have a lifetime, to do it right. You don't punch a time clock every day, so take your time and enjoy your time building a life and a home.

Regarding the bugs, consider putting up bird houses for either bats or Purple Martins. Each bird or bat eats hundreds, if not thousands, of bugs each day or night.

Next time you go shopping, pick up a jar of "Organic unrefined virgin Coconut Oil" in the baking section. I use Walmart brand. Use it to repeal mosquitoes by spreading it all over your bodies. You will smell nice, and the bugs keep away. Just don't store this in your kitchen cupboards...grin. Keep it in the bathroom. Also, if you find a farmers market, you might be able to buy big clippings of Mint. Chop it up and sprinkle around your door, and other places where you sit, hang out. It helps keep the mosquitoes. If you can find a local garden center, or a road side stand, you might be able to buy the whole plant. Plant it everywhere around the front of the trailer.

You can grow it easy from just a small cutting. Also gardenias and geraniums and marigolds repel bugs and snakes. Most any of your mint plants will repel. I think you are probably to far north for eucalyptus but it’s a great repellent.

I recommend you cut the trees and vegetation at least 3 feet in all directions to open up the road and allow it to dry out quicker. Then with most of the logs you can cut them into 7 foot lengths and stack them to dry for fire wood. As log as you manage your forest correctly you’ll have damn near an unlimited supply of fire wood

Investigate just how much area "that little creek" is draining. They can become a raging river in just a few minutes in the right set of thunderstorms. Big sand bars and hollowed out holes in the turns in the creek are good evidence of that. One of those things that mountain people have to contend with.

And when it comes time to repair the damage, BEWARE of the Dept. I did something similar with trash can water catchments. Myn has a removable lid so I flipped it upside down, drilled holes in the middle where standing water would catch, I glued pantie hose over the holes on both sides of the lid (inside and outside), and I placed a brick in the middle over the holes and pantie hose to hold the lid down on windier days. I haven’t had one problem with my lids moving or debris or bugs getting in to my water 👍🏽 You guys are pros so I’m sure you’ve got it all sorted 😁 Keep up the amazing work! I've seen a couple of people who are doing what you're doing and they're using the wood that they're clearing out to make wood chips and then putting that on the road. It has to be improved later with sand and gravel and various things, but that's at least a start. People are also using the wood chips just for little paths around the area. It's certainly a resource that you're going to have a ton of. I think you might find Tyler and Todd as a good resource to see how they built roads.

The creek offers the potential of creating a hydropower source. If you are able to damn up an area you can then build a simple water mill that will spin and create electricity. A basic washer machine only needs 110. I connected a pump to an IBC tote to draw water into a pressure tank. That tank fed the water into a micron filter and a UV filter. The clean water is stored in 55-gallon barrels. They also make a countertop filter called Burkee that you dump water into and it comes out potable. The pressurized water is easily diverted into use by a porch-mounted washing machine. The water drains out into the garden. The soap used is designed for this purpose. Who needs a dryer when you can line dry for free and a lot faster. They also do make a washer and dryer combo that is all one unit.

They taped a piece of fine mesh wire to the underside and when it rained the lid would catch water all the time as well as keeping out leaves and bugs that way. Those babies are so sweet and are growing like water weeds. I don't thing I remember you saying where you are geographical, but it is beautiful. I use the larger IBC totes for all sorts of things. Water, hydroponics, remove the plastic container part and use just the cage for firewood, etc. I have pallet forks for my tractor and use them ALL THE TIME. very worth the investment. You can use the forks to lift the tote high enough to let water gravity feed out of the bottom spout of the tote. I have filled one up, strapped to a trailer, and delivered to neighbors after a storm. We have neighbors that use them for fire suppression. The water, with a touch of bleach, will store for a year (although I rotate 2 totes every 6 months so we always have some fresh water.). Lots of options and good to have a few totes around.
Oh, and a small DC pond pump and a hose or piece of PVC will allow you to get water out of the tote without lifting it up. They are a few bucks on Amz.

I've watched this couple since they started, and watched them become a family, and I love this family. Their children are precious, and these parents seem to do everything right. I think they deserve a PhD in becoming a family. Maybe they appear successful because they have a purpose, they have goals, and they have income that allows them to do what they need to do. Income is the missing ingredient for so many young families. Our government seems so intent to keep young families poor, and so eager to help rich people get richer. There are ways to help young families, but there is a significant political party who's goals seem focused on helping only the rich.
