- Yes, folks, Guest Host Friday is back! Our guest host today is long-time Sandwiches of History follower Shalana Swizter from all the way up in Canada. When I sent her the recipe for the Beet and Egg Sandwich from 1917’s Salads and Sandwiches, her response was “amazing! I hate beets and have never had hard boiled eggs! you gave me the beet and egg sandwich! I'm actually super stoked to try it.” Now that’s the right attitude! Oh and her kid did the filming which I think added a nice cinema verité feel to it. Nicely done, kid!

Someone said "beat some eggs" but they heard "beets and eggs". "Are you sure? Well....ok then." And thus a garbage disposal of a sandwich was born.
You've never had a hard boiled egg??
Yeah im confused as to how an adult person has never had a hard boiled egg. Oh well, now they've tried it!
She looks to be less than 30 years old.....sadly, Im not surprised. Im still trying to figure out how the human race wasnt wiped out prior to the 90's, before gluten-free products existed.
I've never had a hard boiled egg. I've had scrambled eggs twice in my life. Once as an kid and once as an adult. I think eggs taste and smell horrible. So why would I ever try a hard boiled egg?
@@bigguy1621 You do understand that your'e the weirdo, as opposed to the rest of us, right? Its not cilantro.
You've never had cilantro? Also@@arwiviv, why you gotta be like that? We're all here watching a dude and some other people try old sandwich recipes. We are ALL the weirdo.
So much respect to Shalana for using up TWO slices of gluten free bread in this experiment, for trying something unexpected, and for making an extremely watchable episode!
Haha thanks!
Beets and hard boiled eggs are a classic combination in so far as when they are pickled together.
Oh that does sound really good. I like both by themselves but never tried them together.
That's true, great combo
I mean that doesn't sound horrible. But I like beets and boiled egg so. Boiled eggs and green Tabasco sauce was my go to in the Army instead of those powdered eggs. With salt and pepper. I really enjoy soups like Borsht too.
I always feel bad when a guest host gets a difficult or unappetizing sandwich. Bravo for handling it with humor, fairness and bravery! I also appreciated 3 plus ups and the thinking behind each one! Well done!
To be clear, any guest host can ask for a different one. Shalana leaned in here much to her credit.
I'm not a fan of beets either except with pickled herring in sour cream. I haven't heard about Miracle Whip since childhood, so that's a fun blast from the past.
Oh I also hate pickled herring... that would not be a good combo for me!
OK first off no shame in Miracle Whip! Love it and I only like mayo when I moved South and found Duke's! Also I think pickled beets would be better because that would have given it a sweet relish vibe- which she got from the Miracle Whip. I think in 2024 we can skip the butter on the bread now too. And if you want a bacon and egg sandwich with boiled egg salad use bacon bits.
Pretty sure if you hate one of the ingredients in a two ingredient sandwich the score is going to be low. 😂
Didn't I give it a 5? That's pretty decent, I think...
Well done. I couldn't have eaten that. Beets are terrible things. They don't belong anywhere near a sandwich. Australia you listening?
Narrator: Australia was not listening.
Barry, I think I sent two forms to you. The second one is the one I would like you to look at when you have the chance
Beets and Eggs? "I don't think so, Tim." I've mebbe heard of stranger combos, but...."I don't think so...."
Egg salad with beets seems like a pretty good sammich. Probably worth exploring more foods if that was your first boiled egg 😉. You’re a trooper for trying something different!
I'm generally pretty curious about food... but didn't grow up with eggs of any kind really but definitely no hard boiled. And as an adult I just find they look unappealing. Now that I've tried this sandwich, I'm going to try egg salad
I'm thinking deviled eggs with beets great color possibilities
Trying something outside of your comfort zone in front of the internet? Good for you, kid. I’ve never eaten gluten free bread, so if you’ve never had a hard boiled egg, well that’s okay.
Oh… you prefer Miracle Whip to mayonnaise? UNSUBSCRIBED
Lol sorry to see you go!
I often find that I enjoy sandwiches better if the texture has some crunch, so lettuce is a go-to plus-up for me, as it toasting bread.
I’m 100% gonna make the plus up version. I love beets, miracle whip, bacon, & Franks. Think I’ll fry the egg for some extra texture however. Sorry you weren’t a fan! Beets are definitely not for everyone.
Look, I will try almost everything: I have had crickets, water bugs, ants and mopane worms, for example. I can't stand beets. So: mad respect for Shalana.
Shalana took the challenge seriously. My takeaway from her courageous effort is that bacon does make ANYTHING taste (like bacon)better.
I would think about taking the beets as a condiment as in, e.g., beet-jalapeño ketchup for a recipe redesign. Or, alternatively, as a beet salad sandwich with eggs added.
Yooo. I'd really like to know where she got that gluten-free bread from. All the ones I've been seeing/eating for years, are at best, finger/tea sandwich size.
Glad to see Shalana recognizing the inherent sandwich superiority of Miracle Whip over mayo. But in what world did you make it to adulthood without eating a hard boiled egg?
Beets by Dre
This might be plussed up by folding the boiled eggs into a mixture of herbs and crema and keeping it aside for a while, and topping with some sliced cucumbers
It might be better with grated raw beets. The beets in the sandwich looked like they were canned or maybe pickled.
Yup pickled from a jar
I know that the recipe sounds weird, but it's so up my street!
nahhh they were wild in the 1900s. I could never see myself doing beets and eggs in a sammich lmao.
I like beets but I can't imagine them as chunks in a sandwich. With egg? Weird. Good on you for giving them a chance! (also I am sure many comments are saying this but never eaten a hardboiled egg?!)
Sounds a good sandwich, add some mayo, and add some cress or watercress.
I wish I liked eggs :( I'm so jealous of everyone that enjoys them
Beets? The horror, the horror.
BARRY!!!! Pllease pick me! I filled out the original form. Love the channel, man.
Hey, thanks for signing up! How it works is you fill out the form (thanks for doing that) and that info auto-populates to a spreadsheet with each person on their own row. Then I use a random number generator to choose who hosts.
Barry! I want an opportunity to represent a Saint Louis (Missouri)sandwich. Get in touch with the details! With Peace and Love- Jack
Hey Jack, there's a link in the description for your convenience.
You need to say “a gooooo”
What type of beets (there are different preparations)?
Pickled beets from a jar.
This is probably the first smaller channel in a long time youtube has recommended to me that I actually like. Can you do an episode on the hot brown sandwich?
Thanks! And I've got you covered th-cam.com/video/8A33iGSP4KA/w-d-xo.html
Be grateful you didn't have to try a WWII British rationing recipe for a beetroot sandwich. Sliced beets on thinly buttered wholemeal bread!
I've heard of beatin' eggs but never beet 'n' eggs!
How does obtain the honor of being a guests host? Gracie has reviewed a few recipes and would love the chance to give the sandwich review "a go."
There's a link in the description.
love beets, love eggs, so that's one for me :) (and you can never go wrong with bacon ;D)
btw.. would love to know what kind of gluten-free bread Shalana used, 'cause it looked delicious and i'm searching for a good one atm
It's Promise brand. It's their white loaf. And here in Ontario Canada I pay $9 for it! Not an everyday purchase for sure!
@@The_swittens Thank you so much!
what a combo
I'm European so I don't know what the great white north is. I assume Canada?
Sorry, yes. Canada
… interesting
Brave woman
great job. highlighted the value of lettuce and a simple fat (mayo) in a well-balanced sandwich. i might make this with pickled red onions that are usually in with my beets.
The scraping on glass was a no for me. Should’ve used a silicone spatula.
Plus up with bacon, remove beets and egg. There, I fixed it for you! 🥓🥓
100%
I liked that you tried three different ways to plus it up! Great job! Props to the camera person for holding it together. It sounded like they were gonna lose it a few times 😂
Hats off to Shalana for being prepared to “give this a go”. It didn’t look great.
It really didn't have an appealing look!
Interesting sandwich. Thanks for the upload!
Who the hell hasn’t had a hard boiled egg?
Oh, I'll field this one. Shalana!
I think Shalana is a great guest host, and I respect her for trying a simple sandwich that has one ingredient she does not like and another she’s never had before.
YI’m glad she gave it an honest try, and while I disagree with her and love beets, I do agree that miracle whip tastes better than regular mayonnaise to me. It’s what I grew up eating, so I make my own mayo when I’m using it in something special.
You the exemplar of commenters! Thank you!
Shalana was a great host! I liked how she tried it 3 different ways. But also, kudos to her for stepping out of her comfort zone, I really think it makes for an interesting segment when it's not like "and I know I am going to love this" before you take the first bite
🙌
No offense to those that prefer Miracle Whip over Mayonnaise. I'm sure you are nice people. But you are wrong, and I now have an opinion about you.
The worst thing about going to college in the Midwest was the discovery that no distinction is made between mayo and miracle whip. Every sandwich was a crapshoot.
@timmcgarry6883 yeah. That sucks man. Hey. What type of person adds to a comment but doesn't give said comment a thumbs up? No big deal. But, if I were to guess. You're a miracle whip man.
I like mayonnaise, too! I just buy miracle whip because that's what I grew up with. Blame it on being Canadian?
@@The_swittens Hey! I myself am Canadian. Always had Hellmans in the house growing up. I tried to give the Miracle Whip a chance a few years ago. It's just not the same for me. But, thank you for the great video.
Nope nope nope.Kudos to you Shalana,I wouldn't even try this ABOMINATION of a so called "Sandwich".There is a reason the word 'Beet" rhymes with 'Yeet'. Beets belong buried under ground,NOT on a sandwich.
Hold on here, what is this BEET SLANDER?! I am here to DEFEND THE BEETS. Explain yourself!! I’ll fight you!
Ya know, let us no yuck each other's yums. I can't stand beets but that's my palate. If you enjoy them to thine own self, knock out.
@@deadfr0g Mom and Dad both loved beets. My wife loves beets.I cannot stand them, and yes I've tried to like them. But yuck.If you like em,you can have mine too.🤪
Lol
Atta girl. Hot sauce fixes everything.
It really didn't in this case 😂
Miracle Whip?! All I can think of: th-cam.com/video/fYnA6_-q4BY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=S54fBbqEbtltxznT
Right? Someone send her some Duke's.
She likes Miracle Whip??? 🤢 🤮
