idc how many ult players say it's better, smash 4 was a better game. nothing is punishable in ult so everyone in neutral is just fucking swinging like mad men and you have to respect it. Even Marss has complained about it, I remember a particular video where he complained about a brainless terry. And don't get me started in projectiles in ultimate that are no risk and better than ever. S4 is maybe the only competitive smash game (and I've been here since brawl) where projectiles weren't obnoxious to deal with. Even melee which isn't dominated by them, will absolutely gatekeep you omega hard if you can't deal with falco lasers. s4 had some annoying things to deal with with a few top tiers, but in ultimate basically the entire cast is balanced around having their own omega bullshit, so every character feels bad to play against.

Maybe you're not good perrying projectiles and reading your opponent, cause projectile spammers can be easliy punished in ultimate if you know how to time it. Learn how to get good
Maybe I'm just a salty old fuck who misses Sm4sh Marth, but that game was fun as hell. It was just the right amount of terribly balanced bullshit that made watching that much more interesting than Ultimate. You never know when a Luigi player would just beat MKLeo or when a Link player would get Top 3 at a major

Has anyone ever noticed that in whatever Smash game he is in, he is only viable cause he has the most stupidest shit imaginable? He didn’t have anything special in 64 cause everyone including him had stupid jank in that game, and was one of the worst characters in the game. Luigi got the best wavedash in Melee, boosting him up from unviable to Mid Tier. Can any Brawl veterens enlighten me on what Luigi even had in Brawl? Cause he’s low tier in that game. In Sm4sh, prepatch Luigi did 60% to you off of a grab and killed you at 90% with Down Throw > Cyclone. Then it got patched out, but he was still stupid cause he killed you offstage with his still janky cyclone at 0% this time if your not Villager. Fast forward to Ult and he not only has an invincible frame 1 option out of disadvantage, but now he has the most polarizing grab game in Ult behind Icies.

I miss that perfect pivot micro spacing option, it looks so much more fun then what ultimate has for movement and was. I like smash 4 cloud too. Everything else about smash 4 can stay in the past though.

It was also the stale movement, slow gameplay, moves were extremely laggy that almost always lost to shield and its tarnished legacy due to the atrocities that were found out in July that gave people a sour memory.
Agreed. And yes, it’s slower than ult but I don’t know why everyone thinks that makes it automatically worse. You say slower... I say more careful, more measured, more precise. You had to consider what you wanted to go for more thoughtfully. In ultimate, you can pretty much just jump around and throw out aerials without a care in the world... feels like nothing is punishable.

It really came down to who was going to throw out a move and get punished by grabs since 80% of the cast relied on throws to damage and kill. Perfect pivoting was good for microspacing but it also made grabs extremely safe and extended their reach. Combine with the absurdly low shieldstun that had to fixed in a patch and you have a campy game where people are too afraid to commit to anything cause nothing is safe. Unless you were a top tier or a decent high tier you could barely do much. Slow gameplay isn't bad, but when shield and grab beat anything that's not guaranteed to be unpunished, it leaves a sour taste. For Pete's sake airdodging was so good it was the best method for Mewtwo to get out of disadvantage. Giving all characters mobility and safe moves was important cause beforehand it was only top 15-20 characters in Smash 4 while everyone else suffered. I'll agree that Ultimate has too many safe moves and encourages spamming especially online.

I think they went too far in the opposite direction for ultimate, and when you factor in increased input delay offline, the buffer system, and godawful online lag, the game feels like spammy button mashing. Honestly most of my issues w/ ultimate would disappear if online was better... I think it’s pretty inexcusable for a triple A title where they know beforehand most of the player base will be playing online 95% of the time to shit the bed so hard in that department. It is what it is I suppose... Btw, the thing I think ultimate was most successful at was balancing the characters. Pretty much everyone feels viable to a degree. Wasn’t the case in smash 4 so I think you’re somewhat right about characters too.

Smash 4 was the most canon version of Smash. Since Cloud doesn't lose Limit until he uses it in FF7. And I haven't played Bayonetta yet Edit: Sephiroth breaks canon since Shadow Flare is supposed to work like his neutral b in FF7, but doesn't.

When you fly off stage it feels so slow as if you should be able to recover but you never can. ITS SLOW AS FUCK, but I still miss custom fighters so I guess there’s that
Honestly if we really look at smash for wii U & 3DS it’s definitely felt like there’s more replay value cuz you have 4 players with friends which is the main point of smash or 8 if you want to be chaotic. Plus u can collect trophies which gave you character descriptions or told u what series they’re from. Vs ultimate where the spirits are weak just there. Plus the background compared to earlier games is very vibrant same with the graphics unlike melee and brawl. Which are kinda muted or dark looking. Also at least from my experience the online had for glory and for fun which had lots of playing options with 1v1 for glory but 4 players. They had character specific videos to watch if you were having trouble winning matches online. Also online (assuming you don’t run into bayonetta or cloud) it pretty balanced with either opponent being able to ko each other. Unlike ultimate which drops you into a random match with a person who’s usually better than you and sometimes online feels literally unplayable. Which is why likely most people did background matches or arena. Bottom line i know it wasn’t a great competitive game but it had lots of replay value as far as extra’s & pretty fun stages. Also master order’s familiarizes you with how it and crazy orders work while being pretty fair and that gives you a idea of how crazy orders function so it’s not as hard

as "bad" as smash 4 was, I've gotta say it feels significantly more strategic. Often in ultimate, jumping around spamming aerial moves is an optimal strategy, because none of them have any landing lag. contrast that with smash 4, where you very much need to think about when you throw out attacks because shields are pretty tough, and there's actual landing lag. Also, smash 4 cloud is a far more fun to play character than aegis are. terrible take that smash 4 was "bad". game feel was far better than it is in ultimate.
smash 4 cloud is reallly unfair to play with because that character is fucking broken in that game, and smash 4 is definitly not better than ultimate, they removed a bunch of characters, put old ones as dlcs, made characters broken and uninteresting, there is no story mode and the game is named smash bros 3ds or wii u, which is shit, and the classic mode has that shitty mechanic of having to pay alot of coins to put on the hardest difficulty, which is also really unfair, and the landing lag is shit, takes so much time to fall on the stage and also there is bayonetta which ruined the game even more

as "bad" as smash 4 was, I've gotta say it feels significantly more strategic. Often in ultimate, jumping around spamming aerial moves is an optimal strategy, because none of them have any landing lag. contrast that with smash 4, where you very much need to think about when you throw out attacks because shields are pretty tough, and there's actual landing lag.
Also, smash 4 cloud is a far more fun to play character than aegis are. terrible take that smash 4 was "bad". game feel was far better than it is in ultimate.
smash 4 cloud is reallly unfair to play with because that character is fucking broken in that game, and smash 4 is definitly not better than ultimate, they removed a bunch of characters, put old ones as dlcs, made characters broken and uninteresting, there is no story mode and the game is named smash bros 3ds or wii u, which is shit, and the classic mode has that shitty mechanic of having to pay alot of coins to put on the hardest difficulty, which is also really unfair, and the landing lag is shit, takes so much time to fall on the stage and also there is bayonetta which ruined the game even more
