Back in the mid 60s Joel McCrea was a member of the board of Directors of the San Francisco Boy's Club. I was in High School and on the maintenance crew at the summer camp up in Mendocino County. The director at the time was a close friend of Mr. McCrea so the possibility of him showing up at the camp to make an "inspection." It was early evening and a bunch of us were just havin' a talk in the kitchen when Joe Daugherty and Joel McCrea just casually appeared. We all knew who he was because we had one of his films, Stars in My Crown in permanent residence at the camp...we'd all seen it a dozen times. The workers were discussing the tragedy of broken guitar that belonged to one of the unit directors. We were talking of taking up a collection to buy a new one. Mr. McCrea immediately volunteered to make up the difference if we came up short. What really thrilled me was when he said, " Good night Boys" I envisioned being in one of his scenes on the range around a campfire. Yes indeed, Joel McCrea was an awesome person...I can attest to that fact!
How many actors have starred in three works of genius? Joel McCrea did comedy in SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS for Preston Sturges, mystery in FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT for Alfred Hitchcock ("Say, do you think talking to this Hitler fellow would do any good?"), and the great showdown as redemption Western RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY for Sam Peckinpah.
McCrea starred in two big westerns prior to 1942. In 1937 he appeared in ' Wells Fargo ' and in 1939 'Union Pacific '. He also appeared in a non-western film in 1952 or 3. A British thriller titled ' Shoot First '. BTW , he was the first actor to play Dr. Kildare before Lew Ayres made the role his own.
I live in Camarillo where you can sit on a park bench with a statue of Joel McCrea. And met Wyatt M. in front of the ranch when I stopped to get a picture of the sign by the ranch road. Super Nice Gentleman 🤠
I only wish he could have lived longer he and his wife were So Happy with their children and their ranch and to do something So Generious to give the Ranch is Truly Wonderful It’s wonderful to see how truly decent he was by quitting acting when it did get so awful Violent I truly Congratulate Wyatt and the family on doing this!🙏🇺🇸😃

I never heard of Joel McCrea until recently when I started seeing the same actor on these old westerns on the grit channel, he's great at them , he actually met Wyatt Earp and portrayed him in the movie Wichita, another great western star was Randolph Scott who's in more westerns than Joel
