“About one in 68 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with autism, according to the latest U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.”
Autism rates are up, but is it really on the rise?
    news.sciencemag...
“The number of U.S. school children placed in special education programs due to autism more than tripled from 2000 to 2010, to nearly 420,000. But a new study argues much of that increase likely came as educators swapped one diagnosis for another.”

I had all the signs of autism as a child but this was the 70s. I didn't want to be held, played alone, had speech and social issues in kindergarten. I sat and dug a crater size hole in my front yard with a spoon. If that was today, my butt would have been hauled into the doctor for a diagnosis. I had to take the long road in developing social skills and I'm still learning. I'm a US Air Force vet and college graduate.

I feel like people just want their kids to be labelled with something because it makes them come across as special.
It's really insulting for kids who actually suffer from autism. I say suffer because I hate how their parents are forcing their kids to be overly positive and proud about it. Like they're not allowed to express their own genuine feelings if they're negative.

I grew up in the 80s and people today would have said I had adhd and tried putting me on meds. I joined the airforce, also went to college and it turns out I just needed a little bit of weed to calm my brain down. I went from barely being able to focus to earning degrees in sociology and marketing from a top 1% university. These spectrum disabilities are nothing more than a cop out for negligent parents.

Yeah I only got diagnosed about 7 months ago and my mother was extremely surprised, said she had no clue and saw no signs. But then she says I was always an honest kid that always played alone. But that was just “you being you” as she’d say. Lmao.

I think the reason is more obvious for those of us who are autistic realize we are, is because the world is louder and faster than it used to be, making it more overstimulating.
Before, things were more quiet and slow, so less obvious autistics didn't get as overwhelmed as easily.
While we're also getting better at diagnosing it, it's also just more obvious when the loud and fast world is so overwhelming to us now.
At least, that's my thoughts on it.
Also, it's genetic. Autistics have kids, of course there's going to be autistic people coming about when two autistics get together, because we're often drawn to each other.

My eldest son is autistic but high functioning and we have high hopes that if he maintains the medication that helps him with his high anxiety he will be able to be on his own and a functioning member of society. Autistic people have a lot to bring. They don't think outside the box, they LIVE outside the box and can often find solutions to problems that we wouldn't even start to think about.

***** the reason why 'they' would say that is because of the negative behaviour/negative judgements of people in society...autistic people are one of the nicest people in this world..they see the world through different eyes; eyes which if more people viewed this world through would make this world a much nicer place to live in...because of the negativity they receive/experience from people because of having autism is why they would partly prefer not to have it...Richard Branson himself stated that his autism helped him to become the person he is today..if only more people with autism have more support from people around them then being autistic wouldn't be such a pressure and stigma for them.

  • @abrahamchapman
    @abrahamchapman 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I think the answer is pretty simple. While greater attention to the disorder is certainly increasing the number or people who are diagnosed with autism, there is another major factor in play here.
Men who make babies when they are 40 are 400% more likely to has children with autism than men who make babies when they are 30.
Simply put, autism rates are higher because people, in this case men, are delaying baby making.

There are studies done with adults with ADHD and s3xual abus3 in childhood. F.e. 36% of women with an ADHD diagnosis were sa during childhood. ( They counted several studies together. I don't know the english word for that process ).
We might be misdiagnosing c-ptsd due to sa in children as ADHD sometimes.
Dreamy = dissociation, staying in your headspace and not "in your body", hyperactive = being on alert, impulsive = emotional disregulation due to abus3, trouble concentrating = normal when abus3d
A lot of the "typical" ADHD symptoms are also typical symptoms for victims of childhood sa and childhood c-ptsd. And due to the secretive nature of sa, because it's mostly family members or trusted adults, people might think everything is fine in their environment. The child is having a disorder, something is wrong with them.
Interestingly ADHD potentially becomes better with neurofeedback. The same type of neurofeedback with the exact same protocol are also used to help with c-ptsd and make traumatized children calmer.
I'm from a different country. We have the ICD here and c-ptsd is an official diagnosis.

I can understand how increased awareness could explain increases in mild autism (or Aspergers syndrome) because they would’ve just been considered “odd” or “quirky” years ago but better awareness doesn’t explain increased rates of severe autism because it has a very obvious presentation. When I was a kid in the 80s in a small town I don’t recall ever seeing any kids with severe autism but today it’s shocking how many people in the same small town have kids with high needs autism. At the elementary school my youngest goes to, I talk to a lot of the other moms and out of the 10 I talk to 5 of them have children with severe autism (like the non-verbal kind) and my daughter has 3 children in her class with severe autism. When I found that out I thought to myself, what is going on..??

Of course some of it is attributable to changes in the definitions, but even afterwards the rise has been alarmingly continuing. The science so far suggests genetic factors are at least 80% responsible, in which case it could simply be a result of another human 'adaptation' to the challenges of modern life. some people have said autism is part of who they are, and that's fair enough,
but clinical depression and ADD are part of who I am but that does not mean i would disappear if were happy and could concentrate.
the problem of "am i the same person?" is similar to a thought experiment called The Ship of Theseus, where a ship has a rotten plank replaced, and then some time later, it has another replaced and so on until none of the original ship is left. one solution to this problem is to tell the philosopher to shut the f up and stop being silly.
if someone were "cured" of autism they would have the same memories, the same family and friends and would have the same past experiences, so they might still be the same person.
I'd say they probably would be the same, except some things that they previously had to figure out would come naturally. (like instinctively knowing someone's feelings or the meaning of figurative language or whatever they could't do when they were autistic. p.s. i know autism symptoms are unique to the individual, i'm not saying all autistic people have these symptoms just that some do )

(and since depression and autism are vastly different from each other in neurological terms, it's probably not a fair comparison) I guess it's a very individual thing if you want to be cured or not, as some people with aspergers/autism have a really difficult time because of it and might say yes to a cure (who I've personally met, I'm not presuming things)

But Autism can't be cured and it's pervasive. It affects the entire personality. Plus, Autistic people are usually really good at remembering stuff, so if it were cured than they'd probably forget a lot of the things they knew. Some people can't talk or express their self because if it, and without Autism that would change almost everything about them. Depression and ADD are different from Autism. Depression is something you can get rid of and trouble focusing is something that doesn't affect the personality too much.

While the advantages of early diagnosis are mentioned here, the flip side is that it stunts a child's ability to develop his/her own coping mechanisms with the social world around them, Labels are not always the answer and everyone can be diagnosed with some disorder or other if some doctor decides to tick the boxes. Also, ass burgers? Really? If there's a gain in awareness for a condition it can at least be pronounced correctly.

I find it hard to believe that 1 in 45 kids today have autism, and even more have other brain disorders. That doesn't leave very many healthy kids.
I don't ever recall any disorder or combinations of disorders giving you a 1 in 50 chance of getting it. That's incredible, regardless of whether you call it autism or anything else. You should have a 1 - 50 chance of having blue eyes, not of brain disorders. Add in the rise of ADD, ADHD, OCD... and is anyone having a healthy kids these days. Send like if you add up all the things, you have less than a 1 - 2 chance of having a healthy kid.

Not true. There is a reason some are getting this so easily. For one the means for things to cross the blood brain barrier is not closed until after six years old. I think it would help if they would give vaccines a little later. When I was in school they were given at that age range. But Dr. Shaw did a study (Great Plains Laboratory) which has been published and known for awhile now that doctors prescribing parents give their young children Tylenol before and after getting their shots has a major link to the epidemic of autism in the United States. Go to his website, click on autism and listen to the video on this topic. This has been known for awhile now but it is not spreading and I think it is being suppressed by the pharmaceutical companies. No one should be taking acetamenophen/Tylenol...same things and definitely don't give the stuff to children. Go listen. His findings were published. Shaw is a chemist and he use to lecture with Dr. Rimland who was the founder of the Autism Society of America. Rimland has passed but his Institute still exists in San Diego where I use to live. I believe there can be a number of reasons but the major one is giving acetamenophen before and/or after receiving the vaccines. They took the mercury out of the vaccines for children under six years ago in the US and there is a minute amount in batches. It wasn't that. It's not the vaccines at all. It is NOT over diagnosed unfortunately. Only uniformed people come up with that. I worked with these children and they are legion.

Veronica Daze I can't verify everything you say, don't know what you mean by blood brain barrier.
I can day that when we started vaccinating, we got very frustrated with the Dr's. We didn't do it on their schedule, and when we did schedule a vaccine they'd tell us, "Most kids don't even respond to this vaccine." Then the very next sentence was, "Make sure you give then Tylenol an hour before."
My response was always, "Why do I want to give them unnecessary medicine for a vaccine they won't have a reaction to?"
      Dr, "For their comfort."
Me, "But, if three l he develops a fever from the vaccine, I want to know, and we can medicate at that point."
Dr, "Oh, they won't respond, and its usually very mild, but give them the Tylenol."
Then when we'd bring our son in because he was sick, they'd look at his chart and say, "oh he's overdue for ... vaccine, why don't we give it to him while he's here?"
WTF, he's already sick, and you want to overload his system with more?
The final straw was the DPR vaccine. 1st shot, 104° fever, second booster 105°, third 106°. When we called the office to get the dates of his shots, and when we called about his fevers, they said they didn't keep any records.
No records? no reporting adverse reactions?
Goodbye, we found a different office, and no more vaccines.

Out of the hundreds of mother's they studied there was no denying that the more polluted your environment was during pregnancy to the first two years of life the higher your chances of the child becoming autistic. the whole vaccination thing is a load of bull. the strongest link so far is pollution. some people think kids get diagnosed because its some sort of fad but that is not the case. the good news is early intervention can cure it or help tremendously. it all goes back to the fact that pollution is killing us.

The treatments this provides your child will only help them to become a happier, more nureo-typical person in society. No. Drugs dont cause autism and spreading it around that they do is sad. Autism is largely genetic based. I have what a.s.d. recent research is looking like autism is linked to genetics, and passed down, being triggered by resesive genes being prominate over dominate genes or is caused by gene mutations during development. While i cant say for certain that drug use wouldnt cause mutations, it wouldnt be the deciding factor. If anything it would cause being born addicted or a disorder like fetal alcohol syndrome without a prior disposition.

The people in the comments clearly have no idea as into what they're talking about.
Autism is a disease/disorder. I understand that a lot of people with autism are high functioning and you would probably never even know that they had it unless they told you. But to say it isn't a disorder in some way, shape or form is neglecting those who actually have their lives again heavily affected by it. Most people with autism aren't savants or geniuses. Some are low functioning. I know autistic people who can't even drive because of their autism. I know autistic people who can't even pursue their dream careers because if it. People need to understand that it's a spectrum disorder. Yes, there are a lot of autistic people who the sane as everyone else, but at the same time there are autistic people who aren't as fortunate and their autism is nothing short of a curse.

      @jamesloughton62 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

+Hakeem Lawus 'one that produces specific symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury', Autism is not something that affects a specific location nor is it something that causes specific symptoms. You want to play the definition game fine but it shows that you have to rely on a dictionary to prove your point. Autism is not a disease it is a spectrum, a spectrum which varies across a wide arrange of symptoms from learning difficulties to speech difficulties and social difficulties among countless other things. It can affect thew at you move, talk and overall behave. Some people are extremely different with autism due to being on different ends of the spectrum whilst people who suffer from the same disease will often suffer from similar symptoms. I have autism and I am the complete opposite in every conceivable way to one of my friends who also suffers from autism. Does that sound like a disease that causes specific symptoms or affects a specific space or location. Look you can be ignorant and call it disease hell you're probaly one of those people who belive that vaccines cause autism and that's fine but just don't act like you know what your talking about because you don't.

    • @EggEnjoyer
      @EggEnjoyer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Extreme Cynic You realise that if something doesn't have specific symptoms then it wouldn't be able to be diagnosed? Autism surely does have specific symptoms, that's how we know it's there. I know that it's a spectrum disorder but that doesn't really change much. Schizophrenia is different in many people but that doesn't make it not a disease. Are you going to day down syndrome isn't a disease? I used a dictionary to prove my point because factual evidence is factual evidence. No I don't believe vaccines cause autism.
Look I can see how you're offended by the idea of autism being a disease but you have to understand that it really isn't that much of a deal and doesn't change anything you or the disorder. There's stigma around words and sometimes that can cloud what we think.

Autism can make you feel special and unique i agree but keep in mind its a disorder at the end of the day and we have to be able to treat it for your life's sake. Stop believing the bullshit media that wants you to 'accept' every single major desease because they dont want it cured and can make huge profits out of it.

What if there could be a pill or something where you could still be you but it would help some of the symptoms like communication problems, sensory overload, ect? wouldn't that just make life so much easier for you? I know I SURE would like that!!! also it's a spectrum disorder and some of us aren't lucky enough to be bright and smart I am not smart at all it's spectrum disorder and it affects everyone differently

I have autism, and I started talking when I was 3, but I am starting to think that It was harder to learn English, than anything else, I had a hard time learning English because it was already like I knew another language... but I couldn't remember that language, and my memory was stoked, but the strange thing was that my mother had a form of autism, when it isn't even autism

this is utter quackery. we also found out that chronic disease such as hear disease and cancer are on the rise because of a survy that found out more people are aware of its existence.

Autism isnt a learning or intellectual disability like this video seems to imply, but other than that, it was nice to see someone recognizing more realistic truths. People aren't getting "more autism", receiving a diagnosis is just a lot more accessible now.

I disagree that autism is more accepted than intellectual disability. If you look at most autism awareness initiatives, they're all about parents complaining that it's so hard and their lives are ruined and they've thought about killing their kids. There are certainly some people like that in the intellectual disability community, but the awareness initiatives don't focus on them. Instead, the focus is on parents saying their lives have been enriched by their child, and self-advocates talking about how their lives are good. I remember shortly after Autism Speaks' Autism Every Day video came out, the Canadian Down Syndrome Society had posters up showing a person with Down Syndrome and saying "different genes, same value". (This isn't a Canada vs US thing, the Autism Society of Canada is very much like Autism Speaks in their views.) And it's having an impact - in video games, I've started seeing gamers using "autistic" as an insult the way they'd usually use "retarded".
