Is KENDALL MARSHALL UNC's G.O.A.T PG? What Stunted His Growth?

  • In 2012, Kendall Marshall was made the 13th overall pick in the NBA draft. He came from a UNC program that he led to the regional finals in both seasons of the NCAA tournament. His passing ability is what stood out about him, unfortunately the NBA game changes on its own time and his skill set may have not been suited for the times. After being taken by the suns, the majority thought it was the perfect situation for him to flourish, but things quickly changed and he was out after just a season. After only 4 seasons, he was out of the league and retired from the NBA all together in 2017. Was he the G.O.A.T UNC pg though? What Stunted his Growth?

    Im from Dumfries VA and would often get bump with him at the courts in Montclair the summer before he went to UNC. His vision was insane. A beast of a PG, but I agree with the athleticism. I never not once seen him dunk or play above the rim at all, and I thought that was weird for someone that was 6'2". I was always rooting for him, and I still do. Hope he's doing well

    Hey Stunted Grovth, another reason Kendall Marshall didn't succeed was because he left College too early. He left after his sophomore season. He was a great point guard at UNC but Phil Ford was leagues above this guy and someone that could play in any era. I think Marshal was very good and was strong, great passer but as a defender guarding the 1 at an NBA level was more than likely his downfall. But despite all that, mad respect to him as he is a point guard but also had that really pretty spin move as well.

      Yes Yes Yes!! Definitely a poor man's Jason Kidd!! J Kidd was a little taller and dished flashier passes, a little stronger on defense right out the gate, and more talented teammates on his team to amplify his assists. But it took J Kidd damn near 15 years to develop a consistent jump shot!!
      Kendall like many others got a raw deal in the NBA! Not enough height, not enough hops, not enough threes, not enough flashy height lights equals no chance to get in or stay long in NBA!!!

    Man, this one hits home as a UNC fan....even as slow as Kendall was/is....I still feel like he was a jump shot away from having like a ten year NBA career as a backup PG/spot starter. He showed at the NBA level that he was still a terrific facilitator...but him not being able to make open shots consistently was really his downfall. Had he been able to do that, I think he sticks in the league.

    He is the best passing college PG the last 20 years easily. His passing skills in college were unreal. Wrong generation. His base was similar to Mark Jackson. Bigger PG, slow, sees the floor, can't shoot etc. 80/90 most if not all teams had set up PGS. Not like when he was drafted. Appreciate this one. Agree on his lack of scoring skills, believe he sprained his wrist, had to strike when the iron is hot. You need to do one on Harrison Barnes. Folks thought he was going to be at a minimum an allstar level player..Carolina has a high, low system for bigs, Roy been running that since he was at UK, Carolina still doesn't develop pros, they are NBA guys but not impact full

    Want to mention that Kendall was balling out in the tourney in the lead up to face Kentucky and Anthony Davis for a rematch in the possible 2012 NCAA final, but Creighton’s coach McDermott put a hit out on him and had Wragge break his wrist on an in the air push foul down 16. I really thought he was on his way to NBA level greatness until that moment, he was starting to score consistently and then that foul happened. Never saw him attack the same way again, passing was still amazing. Anyway, McDermott is terrible x Infinity.

    • @elliemyers6435
      @elliemyers6435 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah....a painful (pun intended) memory for us UNC fans. Has there been explanation as to why McDermott did that? A lot of people forget that Kendall was really beginning to score as well as distribute in the NCAA tourney that year. 2012 still hurts, as that's a year we really could have won it all....but losing Dexter strickland (best perimeter defender as well as a decent PG for when Kendall needed a break) to an ACL midseason AND Kendall in the tourney and having to play Stilman white against Kansas sunk us. If we stay healthy that year, we have a great shot at avenging that loss to Kentucky and hanging another banner in the Smith Center.

Why did D'Antoni give up and dump him so quick? D'Antoni also dumped Ray Felton a few years earlier in NY when he was avg. 17 pts and 9 assists , IDU why? D'Antoni also benched Stephon Marbury for unknown reasons in his prime.

  • @8301TheJMan

    Yeah i grew up in the 90's and early 2000's, to this day i hate scoring point guards. Especially when they are on a team with other good or great scorers. Though it was a college example, one of the better examples of this best example of this was Michigan back when went to the finals with Trey Burke in 2013 if i remember correctly. Most Michigan fans remember him being brilliant that year. I remember him bringing the ball down and shooting without making a single pass multiple times down the stretch of the championship game even though he had Tim Hardaway Jr, Nik Stauskas, Glen Robinson III, Karis Levert, and Mitch McGeary who were all more efficient scorers. That team should have easily won it that year and instead we barely got there, and despite having the lead at halftime - Louisville came back and won. And the biggest reason we lost that game specifically, was Trey being a ball-hog plain and simple. I feel like a scoring pg ruins the flow of an offense if you have a bunch of other good scorers. With he PG''s having the ball when they bring it down they should be trying to get the other four guys involved rather than always looking to shoot. Of course if you dont, then it doesn't matter having a PG looking for his shot first. This is partly why i really dislike what the NBA has become the past decade, even much of college ball for that matter. Though in college, because it's far more likely for a team to not having nearly as much offensive talent, it's far more understandable to have a PG being the go-to scorer imo

    I would love a stunted growth on my guy, Julian Wright. He was the first Sophomore & youngest player to ever represent the Kansas Jayhawks in the league.. He made it “okay” for guys to leave & not be expected to stay 3+ years at KU. Stay blessed bro!! 🍒

    @Stunted Growth you said a mouth full when u talked about UNC's strategy for NCAA success vs NBA! Die hard UNC fan and I can name a bunch....Hansbrough, Henson, Brice Johnson, Sean May JUST to name a few. With the guidance towards the NBA game, these kats would be better. I think a younger Hubert Davis might change it! And that's no diss to Roy at all!

    Damn JC, best UNC point guard ever? I'm not even saying you're wrong but that covers a ton of ground. Dean Smith was a one man PG factory. I'd really have to think to rank them all, but off the top of my head, Larry Brown and George Karl, Phil Ford, Kenny Smith, Ed Cota,, Ray Felton....like trying to choose the finest grain of sand on Hawaii.

    I watched one game where he was with the Suns and they were playing LeBron and the Cavs. He was out at the 5 second line and passed it inside, and LeBron stole it around the free throw line. He had a 10 foot lead and Lebron started the break. Lebron with the ball, just ran right by him, woosh! He started by backpeadling, then spun around to run, and Lebron blew by him so fast he had to just reach out and foul. Only time I've seen a power forward with the ball make up 10 feet and just run right by a point guard who had a 100 lb. advantage. I knew right then he was done, because I liked him too.

    Shout out to Phil Ford, Jimmy Black, Kenny Smith, Jeff Lebo, King Rice, D. Phelps, E. Cota, R. Felton, and Ty Lawson. It does not matter. They all won and were successful. Duke fans remember Cota so well because Cota ate our lunch when he played us and was a difference when we played the Tarheels. Smith had the best overall career if you include the NBA. Choice is yours.
