One suggestion: Have you ever thought of gel printing in acrylics onto unused sticker pages? I've experimented with the process and have had some fun results. I recommend the solid sheet that is probably what you would term A4 size. My first experiments have been with sticker paper that had already been partially used in packaging that came still fixed to its release paper backing. I applied _thin_ layers of paint using a gel plate, then once it was all dry, I used circular paper punches in various sizes from office style smaller dots to 2.5 inch sized circles. This allows me to customize and create my own stickers. I have yet to try any other shapes, but I do have some square punches that I'd like to try as well. One more thought: it's been my experience that the best coverage with the least amount of cockling/buckling may be had by using very thin layers of paint from the gel plate. Repeat applications of such thin layers has been more successful for me than one single heavy coat. If you use different colors, it can also give some fun patterned or even mottled/blended results.
In addition, this would no doubt give you more lightfastness to the dots you'll use than regular stickers can offer. using small stickers is more fiddly this way, since they've been cut and therefore are all small singles, each with their own backing paper, but it offers loads of color choices + the lightfastness (with the right pigment of course) of acrylics.

I love your experiments! I can't get deli paper easily in Australia so I use greaseproof paper which I've read somewhere is almost exactly the same as deli paper but comes in a continuous roll from the baking aisle in the supermarket and is much cheaper.

Great vid...thanks a lot for sharing! ...today I bought myself a laser printer with a copy function, fiddled around all day and made the first useable transfer with the Gelli Plate a few minutes ago. I only managed to do this because I watched some of your vids on this topic quite often ! (I printed out the picture and then copied it twice on the same paper. Along with a bit of alchemy the transfer worked :))

I love deli paper! It takes a real beating too, which opens up so many possibilities.
As for distressing, I find fine sandpaper distresses book pages really nicely.

I did not know that spray adhesive was workable for an extended time. good to know! I haven't worked with deli paper though I know a lot of people have. I'm going to give it a try!

Love your graffiti style art . In Australia it’s hard to get deli paper and I have found Coles Greaseproof paper…using the mat side very successful…even through the printer.

@@creativebeanart there is an unwaxed sandwich wrap in Coles or Woolies… it works fine… usually the cheapest one on the shelves… no wax

Some great tips here. I like your exploiting of the simple functions of 'Word' software. Too many fancy programs just give you too many options and you get stuck.
If you want to eliminate the fold in the paper you can press the paper with a warm iron...

Thank you for yet another great tutorial! Have you tried Tissutex? It is the same as or similar to abaca paper. I got mine from Georgeweil in your country. It is much stronger than tissue paper, but very transparent and has a fabric like texture. I would love to see what you could create with it.

I was just watching this again, and wondered if you know about Carnival wet strength tissue paper. It’s a UK based company, and ordering directly from them is great. I much prefer it to deli paper for collage. It’s an absolute must for me. It’s more transparent.
Yep, made sculptures from it years ago. Only recently got some for gel plate use and been using it a lot : )
Deli paper really is the best for collage!!
Deli paper might be available larger in restaurant supply shops. The stuff I get also available with no crease. I love using it.

If you go lightly with the gel medium, they don't smear. I haven't sealed them yet, but have used spray varnish on tracing paper before - sure it would work with the Deli paper

Haven’t tried deli paper yet- do you know anything about the archival quality. Is it acid free, and you mentioned a waxy surface. I wonder how this affects how paint over top? I did find some rice and tracing paper, but I’m not sure how they compare.

Also when you finish a collage, do you varnish it? There is spray varnish, which I've used in semi gloss (satin) finish, but I was wondering if liquid varnish that you apply with a brush is better as it's thicker. The spray on varnish is invisible and I'm wondering if it protects the piece.
Matt medium. I have used matt spray varnish to seal collage - protects the piece just fine. The fluid gel medium is also good for sealing. Sometimes I like the paper texture unvarnished though and, as with any found paper collage, colours will fade and change over time. This doesn't bother me, everything changes.

Ok, so I was excited to receive a consignment of deli paper and got printing and glueing. It is rippling like noone's business! Whether I use acrylic medium, mod podge, paint....whether it's thin or thick, on one side or both, onto thin paper, art paper, thick paper...more ripples than a seventies sweetshop! Any ideas?
Trying getting one edge down smooth then running a plastic ruler over the rest as you lay it down, if that makes sense!
also, if the paint is very thick, you'll more likely get wrinkles : (

Ink jet : ) I use laser prints to do image transfer directly on the gel plate

I wonder if deli paper is like parchment paper for baking?
As I understand it, baking parchment has a silicone coating, which is intended to prevent sticking. Deli paper is what is used at most burger joints, to line the bottoms of reusable plastic baskets in which burgers and fries are often served. It's also often used to wrap sandwiches (thus the name). It's also known (at least in the US) as dry wax paper. This is to distinguish it form the type of waxed paper usually found in grocery stores, which has a heavily-waxed, slick surface on both sides.
From what I've been able to find out, wet strength tissue (which is difficult to find in the US, and disproportionately expensive when you do find it) uses a resin coating for water resistance and toughness when wet. It is available from Amazon under the name carnival tissue (as mentioned in other posts), and costs about $65 for 60 sheets. Sheets are 27 x 19 inches.

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond to these. I saw your latest two videos within about 5 hours after you posted them. I watched them a couple of times, each. For some reason, they took a turn that I had a hard time adjusting to, and I wasn't sure I had anything substantive to say about them.
However, I did keep thinking about them. And then I watched them some more. And now, I have some comments that I think may be worth reading.
I appreciate the deeper dive into details of a variety of individual techniques. This is something I think is widely lacking in TH-cam art videos-especially in the gel printing arena. So much of the content is redundant. I have watched innumerable videos on using stencils with gel plates, and almost all of them rehash the same facts and approaches. Your being “obsessed with seeing how far [you] can push” gel printing-really, all the techniques you cover-is possibly your greatest asset, especially combined with your overall sensitivity and responsiveness to the character and potentials of the materials you use.
My Comments:
First, while I'm thinking of it (Ooh, look: Squirrel!), you've repeatedly shown tantalizing background evidence of constructing 5-pointed stars with compass and straightedge. I think a short, focused video (YT Short?) about how to do this efficiently would be really useful to a lot of people-both many of us within this community and new people currently outside it. If you created the typical vertically-oriented (not to say unedited) YT Short, you might reach some interested viewers who have not yet found you.
Surface destruction-I really enjoy the substrates you create. This one seems to have some thicker stuff in it. Is that true? If so, what/how much did you do to level the final surface?
Using Word for image manipulation - This was brilliant! As much as I love working with top-notch tools and supplies, when I can afford to, I also love learning about new possibilities available through unexpected use of commonly-available resources. (BTW, this is something at which you generally Excel. Word.)
Segmenting image for larger scale-great idea. Anything about extending techniques, imagery and artworks beyond externally-imposed size limitations is interesting to me. I'd be interested in seeing how far you could push this. ...If I don't get there first.
Dry mount instead of spray mount? - I cringe at the use of aerosol anything. Whether spray paint or, especially, spray adhesives (including spray glitter), the propellants tend to be pretty noxious greenhouse gasses, and are often carcinogenic solvents, as well. And that cloud of stuff you see drifting away? The part that /doesn't/ land on the intended surface? In the case of spray paint, the part that isn't propellant is micro plastics. In the case of adhesive, it's micro particles of carcinogenic chemicals specifically formulated to stick to whatever they land on, including your skin, vegetable garden, hair, pets, nostrils, or lungs. Those toxins belong neither in our environment nor in our bodies.
Various sheet adhesives are convenient and effective alternatives. Search for “double sided adhesive sheets.” Some function differently than others. As a somewhat spendy but bulk-priced example, consider “3M Positionable Mounting Adhesive 568.” This adhesive is very durable, relatively easy to use, doesn't bleed into your work, and functions as a substitute for traditional dry-mount processes. You stick your cutout piece to the sheet and peel it up. The adhesive under your work piece [for the most part] sticks to the back of the piece; the surrounding part [mostly] stays on the adhesive's backing sheet. A light scratch with a craft or scalpel blade around the outline of your piece will help assure neater results, but isn't always strictly necessary. Basically, the process turns your work piece into a high-quality sticker. (The backing sheet seems to be the same stuff as that on printable labels, and is also available in larger size, so it might work for that laser-print image transfer technique you showed us, some time back. Sorry, I couldn't locate the episode with my quick scan back....)
The chemicals in the adhesive, itself, may well be just as bad as those in the adhesive part of spray mount. I don't know. However, because it's in dry, sticky sheet form, it's much more controllable. It doesn't easily spread in the environment. Tiny boogers of it do seem to get on nearby items, while you're working, so some masking tape or a “rubber cement eraser” are useful for collecting such. But the spread is nothing like with sprays. The adhesive is somewhat repositionable, before being burnished down. But afterwards, the material provides a very strong, smooth, bubble- and wrinkle-free, long-lasting bond. Some other sheet adhesives work similarly; some require you to completely cut around your work piece. Also note that there may be issues if your cutout has unsupported, delicate or spindly shapes, or if it's made of innately delicate material, such as some tissue papers or, say, a dried leaf.
Veiling with plain deli paper-Another palmface moment for me, and an excellent example of being responsive to your materials: Using the paper in its innate, unaltered form, to do what it just naturally does-fog things.
Cutting back into, to selectively reveal areas-An extension of the sensitivity to materials displayed in the veiling technique. Like turning up the contrast or focus on a part of the image. I had never thought to do this for that purpose.
Distressing-You've done this before, to a degree, mostly by cutting, peeling, tearing or sanding. But the more-subtle roughening of the surface with wet rubbing was another aha moment for me. It opened my eyes to the sort of spectrum of distressing effects, the gradations possible. Thanks!
Overall, after considering these videos for some time, I have come to very much appreciate their technical detail and depth. I'd love to see more of this type of deep-dive material since, as I alluded to above, I've found it so rare in this area of printmaking and collage. As always, I deeply appreciate the time, effort, and creativity you put into these productions, as well as into the research and exploration behind them. I hope your generosity is being reciprocated. You deserve it!

Hi. I do complex collages but I use carnival paper which comes up to A1 sheets and is better and much cheaper than deli paper. I buy it from amazon. It is used in the UK mainly Somerset for stretching over willow to make carnival float decorations. It is very thin and very strong when wet. I create really large pieces with it. You can overlay 10 to 20 sheets and there will be no edges and it becomes transparent with Liquitex medium. Thanks for sharing. I learn a lot from you.
