    Al, you should definitely keep a spare tool kit in the mule. Just in case the tracks go out of adjustment or loosen up. Especially if you are up at the new property! Looks great.👍😎

    @olddude7401 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Al, that is one heck of a conversion for only about $1000 dollars per wheel. It will really open up your property and make all of the homestead “year-round” accessible. Be safe out there and carry a set of small snowshoes on the mule - just in case you have to walk out. Been there - did that, broken snowmobile belt!

    Power washer to clean all your vehicles. It depends what parts you gave ordered for winter. Power battery to jump the battery when you are out and about. Engine heater when it gets cold especially in the field. Winter survival kit including first aid kit.

    When we had the horse pull the wood sleigh into the woods for logging, fire wood, or fun, we had the steel freeze on the runners to the ground. we had to GEE and HAW the horses to break the ice so the horses could pull the sleigh forward.
    When Trucking in the cold and parking for the night, I would go back and forth a short bit to cool the tires so they wouldn't freeze to the earth. I would not set the brakes for parking, but would use a block to clog the wheels. I have had brakes freeze up to and take off dragging tires which would pop leaving me needing new tires on an axle. So do not stop and park like you do in the summer warm air when it is winter in the woods.

    • @samvalentine3206
      @samvalentine3206 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good advice about NOT setting the parking brake as it may freeze in the ON position, just like in a regular car.

      The old steel wheeled tractors would freeze the rims to the ground. If you tried to take off, it would pull a wheelie and could flip over backwards.

    Nice machine! Great setup. Hey, I am an aircraft mechanic of 25+ years. Unless otherwise instructed, fastener orientation (bolt orientation) is always from front to back (the head of the bolt in front, the nut on the back) or from top to bottom (the head of the bolt on top, the nut on the bottom). That way IF the nut were to come off due to vibration or some such action, the bolt can only fall on (aircraft are hopefully moving forward at all times ;-) ) or fall in and not the converse, falling out or falling down. Nice ride! Great job setting it up, Al!

    Good morning Lumnahs! Wow, love that snow tank. Al it is always fun to watch you think/work through the processes of what ever job you're tackling. You're a major carpenter/gearhead. I love the gleam in your eye when you had to test drive it before Gina would get in. Love seeing the where's Figaro hoodie again. I need to get myself one for Christmas. I've been putting it off as we are trying to pay off bills and now are getting our real estate ready to sell. We will be moving out to the family homestead where our son is soon. I'm so excited to raise chickens. Pigs, sheep and a few cows. We'll start with chickens and pigs. I'm so glad we live in Virginia tho, not sure I could handle the climate you deal with. Definitely like the greenhouse. We're impressed with your success on that. Pretty sure you sold us on that. Blessings Lumnahs.

    Just a helpful side note, always torque Suspension and Chassis components in their neutral state. Neutral state is at ride height and empty load with wheels fully on the ground (full weight on tires "tracks in your case"). This is even more important if rubber/poly bushing are part of the joint being tightened, if the rubber/poly is in a bind when loaded it will fail faster than designed too.
    P.S. jealous of the snow tank. have some fun with it.

    Is there gonna be a lot of snow, etc., getting thrown back by the tread and getting inside the mule and on whoever is in it? You order doors or some type of shielding to protect you guys from all that or when it's snowing, raining, or if the wing is just blowing hard, to keep the elements out and the warmth in? But it does look like it would be fun!

    Suggest enclosed cab with heater, two way radios for you and your family to communicate with on the property.

    • @DrLarryAnderson
      @DrLarryAnderson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly (about radios). As a long-time ham radio operator, I always carry a bag (8-10) of fully-charged FRS radios to my nephew's 500 acre ranch to ensure communications connectivity with all concerned, especially those who do not have communications licenses (not needed for FRS). The ranch is hilly, yet we have good communication across the 500 acres, so I suspect you'll have good range on your OGP (Off Grid Property). If you do go the FRS route, be sure to get the ones with maximum range, as well as a built-in weather radio. Many units also have beacon signals to help in case you get hurt out in the woods and need to be found by the search and rescue teams. Insurance for all occasions.

    If you typically get that much snow its going to be hard to tell where the road is. Use something to mark the edges every so often. Like a plastic pole with a ribbon. Or if you have time build some concrete stanchions or bollards.

    Extra equipment: 2 - 5 gallon fuel cans on the back. Thats lots of property, you dont want to limit your range. You will be going slower due to the tracks but using the same amount of gas as if you were going fast.

  • @richardmattingly7000
    @richardmattingly7000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    One was surprised that the bolts didn't seem to have cotter pins to keep the nuts from working loose on the tracks since there backing out can happen but hopefully it's designed not to need them instead. Gina might be a bit more enthused if Al got her to drive it and the Kubota since most of the time he seems intent on having all the fun to himself but with tracks who'd blame him. A tarp thrown over the entire Mule would be best to keep it clean and you'll have to have several feet on the ground before it can go where you want it to since what it couldn't clear with wheels still applies when it comes to obstructions as it is now. Keep it in 4WD since you'll need it especially turning and only due that when moving since the front steering will have trouble with it otherwise since it was for wheeks not the tracks footprint when designed. Looking forward to seeing it at Lumnah 2.0 and perhaps building it a cargo sled on skids might be something it could tow since it will make hauling more materials since the Mule's bed isn't that large.
