    A Wikipedia article mentioned Gen 1 is 1992 to 2002, Gen 2 is 2003 to 2011, Gen 3 starts 2012 TO 2017, and Gen 4 starts 2018 onwards

and old kpop stan here, from what I know since Twice still haven't been dethroned for the National Group position so the 4th Gen hasn't started yet in Kpop idols
    1st Gen = S.E.S era
    2nd Gen = SNSD era
    3rd Gen = Twice era
like for example in Jpop, there was the so-called Solo idol era (Seiko Matsuda, Momoe Yamaguchi, etc.), Onyanko Club era (start of girl groups w/ many members & the graduation system), Morning Musume era (start of idol groups who have their own variety show), Golden Generation era (AKB48 Groups & the start of its General Election system & idols who have their own drama series), Sakamichi Series era (Nogizaka46, Keyakizaka46, Hinatazaka46 & the start of idols who are also meant for modeling such as commercial model, ramp model, magazine model)
since Nogizaka46 haven't been dethroned yet, the new era hasn't started yet like that...

There are years called the transition era, but they still belong in the previous years. Also generation changes when something big/or a clear change happens. 1st gen are the foundation, hence the first idol groups. Around early 2000 when the transition to 2nd gen happens: kpop starts getting known outside Korea until it became a wave, the Hallyu wave. Hallyu wave is what 2nd gen is.
2nd gen, known for being the hallyu wave era, is when kpop is not only confined within Korea, but is now big all over asia + attempts to break western market. It became possible because of TH-cam. Companies started to have their own yt channel and upload mvs in there.
2010-2012 was a transition to 3rd gen, and it was finalized after Gangnam style went viral.
After Gangnam Style, 3rd gen starts. Due to the success of 2nd gen + Gangnam Style, more companies got established, more groups debuted. Kpop starts going global, with groups having foreign members to be able to communicate and expand. Idol survival shows also becomes a trend to find trainees and form a group that will "stand out" in the now overly saturated industry.
There were many groups that debuted, but only a few stood out and is still active.
4th gen is still arguable, but personally I think we already are in 4th gen. Following the success of the big groups from 3rd gen, big name companies debuts their follow up groups that already has a fandom even before debut due to being promoted even before the actual debut, making them highly anticipated. Some of the idols came from said survival shows too. Groups such as ITZY and TXT, I feel like are in 4th gen already. I believe 4th gen officially started within 2018.

I completely agree with this. There are quite a few people who say that we are still in 3th gen. But these new groups are, in my opinion, different then 3th gen groups.

    • @raven-kn6lv
      @raven-kn6lv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I understand why people, usually koreans, think that fourth gen hasn't yet started because it seems like everything is a rush. I would rather say 2018 to 2022 is a transition era to fourth generation same way 2010 to 2012 was a transition era to third gen. This(2018-2022) is when most 3rd gen groups have established themselves and become official seniors and kind of open doors to focus on 4rth gen groups.
Idols who debuted in 2018 or late 2017 are definitely 4rth gen groups, but the 4rth gen era itself is still being built and established

@@raven-kn6lv I agree. It's the transition part, but already within 4th gen yes.
It's just so weird for me to see ppl divide generations by decade haha

for me personally 4th gen groups have already debuted (txt, itzy, aespa, etc.) but 4th gen as a whole hasn't started yet. We're still in a transitional era, because groups from 3rd gen are still dominating. I believe in a year or 2 we'll be fully in 4th gen now.
Kinda like in 2014, the top groups are still 2nd gen, big bang, snsd, suju with the exception of exo, but 3rd gen are already debuting. 2016 is when I think we We're fully in 3rd gen, with the rise of groups like bts, twice, gfriend, bp, produce groups. (lmao this is so long im sorryyy)

@@theastronauts3871imo boy groups generations are shifted 1-2 back from ggs, like SuJu would probably be included if you were talking about 2nd gen groups but The Grace wouldn't. Also BTS didn't really get big until later so that kinda cemented them as 3rd gen rather than 2nd, like Dreamcatcher would be grouped with groups like ITZY, and (G)-Idle even though they debuted in 2017.
