Let's Talk About Math Rock I'm going to share this video on my Facebook page.. Do you have a band page or a "let's talk about math rock" page i can tag?
Stumbled upon this, I find it very nostalgic. I'm from Chicago and in the mid-late 90s and early 2000s this sound was very popular among the bands who played at the Fireside Bowl and the Metro. Cap n Jazz, American Football and all the Kinsella bands were among my favorites. About 10 years ago I used to drink at a bar called Rainbow near Damen and Division. John Haggerty from Naked Raygun and Tim Kinsella from Cap N Jazz were bartenders there. I always thought it was really cool to have drinks served by 2 musicians that made music I love and legends in my eyes. Great videos, I look forward to watching more of them!
Song List: 00:14 Don Caballero - fire back about your baby's sex 1:03 Tera Melos - 40 rods to the hog's head 1:26 American Football - never meant 2:12 This Town Needs Guns - 26 is dancier than 4 2:41 Maps and Atlases - every place is a house 3:29 Toe - goodbye
Let's Talk About Math Rock The Speed of Sound in Seawater ~ Unassisted Human Flight and Giraffes? Giraffes! ~ A Quick One While She's Away and Junior Bob ~ Yeah Kate You Like The Beach Nnamdi Ogbannaya ~ Art School Crush. All of these songs have some beautiful riffs that really stuck with me
I'm a fan of The Speed of Sound in Seawater, I really like the red version EP by them. I just check out Junior Bob, really cool stuff , the guitarist has a unique way of playing.
0:13 Don Caballero 'Fire Back about Your New Baby's Sex' 1:03 Tera Melos '40 Rods To The Hog's Head' 1:25 American Football 'Never Meant' 2:11 TTNG '26 is Dancier Than 4' 2:40 Maps and Atlases 'Every Place is a House' 3:07 TubeLord 'Night of the Pencils' 3:28 Toe 'Goodbye'
Have you checked out josh martin from little tybee and his lessons? Although it's not your style and it's more folky, his guitar work is amazing, especially since it's so technical but fits in so well with the band he's in. Think you'd be really into some of the techniques as well.
i learned how to play 40 rods a few months ago and its pretty tough, its really fun to play once u get all of it down. when i first listened to the song i was amazed, i had it on repeat all the time. but i especially liked the riff at 1:25-1:55 (time stamps for the riff in the song) so i learned it by ear so i could loop it on my looper pedal and create some cool layering parts. i eventually went on to find tabs for the rest of the song and now i can play it :) thats ma story
Very nice. Thanks for sharing. It did take me a while to get it to full speed. I'm not at all adept with effect pedals, but knowing how to use them would really help with songs such as this. Time to start learning to use them more effectively, haha.
love toe, you could make a metronome (song xd) cover, I think those polyrythmic guitars can really inspire some writting specially for someone with a band
+RaberSaber I'm using my hand to mute the strings, if I don't then they ring inbetween the taps. If you check out don cab playing that song he does it the opposite way, having his hand mute the strings below.
Hello; ive been thinking about getting into this style of rock. Are there any beginner lessons or theories out there for this, and would it be a good idea for a beginner to start here? Thanks.
+Benjamin Denim hello. Good question. I've had a discussion about this before with a few friends. For a beginner I'd say it's better to get the basics of playing down first and then start to think about playing in more of a mathier style. On my page I have quite a few lessons. The first lesson I did on chords may be useful. Check it out, you can get a good feel for if ylu think you're ready or not. All the best and good luck!
Is it just me or is 26 is dancier than 4 a little too unclean? Not sure if it's too much gain, reverb, a bad mic, or bad yt compression but it sounds a little too gritty, like you gave the tab to Nirvana to play or something
Hello. Yeah, it didn't come out the way I intended it to. These were all recorded using amp modeling software which I hadn't really got to grips with at that time, plus the standard squier strat doesn't sound all that good. Haha.
Yes, I do. However, I try to avoid string buzz if possible. With my PRS, I filed the nut for thicker gauge of strings but filed the low E space too much, so I get fret buzz on my low E string quite often.
This is why I put down my guitar. Not enough dedication and it isn't worth it to me unless I can play beautiful stuff like this. Also if you like these bands, check out Floral.
Jordan Carnaggio The only way you can play like this is to practice. It's discouraging when you can't play your favourite stuff right away, but stopping completely is just gonna make it harder. Keep trying!
Wow...now I isolated the reason this genre doesn't appeal to me. The riffs don't say anything really, there were a couple melodic phrases, with counter harmonies that worked. But nothing memorable. If this is the famous stuff, it's going to always appeal to a small contingent of rock fans.

never meant is such an emotional riff. One of my favorites, great video!
Thanks, Luis.
Can’t go wrong with American Football. Thank you.
Math rock
1. Clean tone
2. Be able to phrase in and out of odd and common times
3. Touch the neck with both hands every now and then
4. use alternative tunings
5. compressors
6. fender amps
what else? the name math rock pulled me in, but what's math rock ?
rippinkorpse en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Math_rock
Why Fender amps, a Vox wouldn't do the job?
You forgot have a good melody
My favorite math rock riff is TTNG's Triptych. Its so delicate and wonderful, 5 years later and it dtill gives me chills and goosebumps
Tippity-tappity-tippity-tappity-tap, tippity-tappity-tippity-tappity-tap, tippity-tappity-tippity-tappity-tap. Keep 'em coming!

Very informative and worth subscribing subscribing for life! Great accuracy with the muted hammer ons!
Thanks dude! I could've played some of these a bit better when not on camera, but I'm happy with what I got in the end, haha.
Anyone knows the order of the songs/bands?
Looooove Tubelord, thanks for the tabs!
You're welcome, Rob.

Do you like minus the bear? They got me into math rock.
Yes! Not so much their new stuff though. I'd say planet of ice is my favourite.
yeah, dude. I agree. I had to push myself through Omni, but everything before that was gold.
Minus the Bear and Colossal got into math Rock
Colossal are great!
Fucking Colossal! Do you know if they're planning to release a new album after the 7" last year?
what about hella? headless?
I'm sure to make some more of these in the future.
zach hill - Death Grips? No Death Grips?
Hella is noise rock tho
ITop - Nah, maaaaang. Melt Banana is noise rock.
Please can you show how to play "How to get Iceman on Your Licence Plate" by Don Cab. I''d love that :D

now this is math rock, i can feel it.
Hi! Can you teach us more on achieving the preferred guitar tones. Like whats the basis should it be single coils and stuff thanks
Name of the songs im new in this genre
.
love toe, you could make a metronome (song xd) cover, I think those polyrythmic guitars can really inspire some writting specially for someone with a band
Nice. I need to get myself a looper so I can mess round with those types of ideas.
Love this channel. Subbed!
Thanks!

Tubelord! Hell yeah, what an underrated band
You are my hero. I salute you!
Thanks, Diego!
Fuck Yeah!!! Tera Melos!!!
Solaktion hotdogman

love that tone, is that really just an orange and a CS-3?
Thanks! I'm plugged straight into the micro terror head (no CsS-3 on this video). I tweaked the EQ a little in a mixing program.
Awesome,bro!
I know Uchu Conbini is really difficult but I was hoping to see some of their riffs. Lol
Yeah... give me a few year! ha.
Let's Talk About Math Rock
Dude I'd love to see you breakdown their music and analyze it.
They have a new band jyocho, you should check it out dude! Keep it mathin!
Nice capo on that first song
+RaberSaber I'm using my hand to mute the strings, if I don't then they ring inbetween the taps. If you check out don cab playing that song he does it the opposite way, having his hand mute the strings below.
+ Let's Talk About Math Rock
oh coolio it kinda looked pretty goofy to me (i'm not much of a guitarist)
completely forgot about maps & atlases, they havent released anything in so long. everyplace is a house always made me go nuts.
Don Caballero - Sure, We Had Knives Around
is the tuning standard on the american football song? or is it C/gadd4

what model squier is that?
A standard model. I wouldn't recommend it though. A made in Mexico or the classic vibe series is much nicer imo^^
What recording software or video editor did you use to put those two videos of you playing over another video of you playing
I'm using Sony vegas pro.
What part of Newcastle are you from?
What's the second to last one?
have u listened to Tom's story or tide/edit?
2:12 what’s the band

whats that second to last song?!
Tubelord - Night of The Pencils
hey man, what tune guitar you use ?:)
Thanks!
What about CHON? :(
It would be nice if you shared a tab on nothing new
I'd need to tab it first!
No The Fall of Troy Thomas Erak? He was the originator of math rock if you ask me.
what was the name of that american football song. It's so familiar I just can't remember the name
blackknightkanos Never Meant
i love your videos
Thank you!
do you lower your action
Yes, I do. However, I try to avoid string buzz if possible. With my PRS, I filed the nut for thicker gauge of strings but filed the low E space too much, so I get fret buzz on my low E string quite often.
Hell yeah!
Thanks, Seb. Good to see you back again.
Anyone has the tunnings?
6th song?
It's in the comment section. I think it's Night of The Pencils by Tubelord.

TTNG becomes so complex it sounds like Tim is just fuckin around

Toe is my favourite band
Don caballero best band on earth.

Check out TTNG, Tera Melos, Toe, Via Luna Don Cab, Hella.
I thought you were gonna play an extended excerpt of 40 rods... I guess it's not possible for humans at all...
Give me a few years^^

On this list of 'play like such and such' next video will be play like TTNG.

toe - goodbye

bygones!
There’s no such thing as a ‘popular’ math rock riff, unless by popular you mean enjoyed at Berklee.
Toe!
Half face tho
No CHON...
There's CHON in my other 7 riffs I did more recently! th-cam.com/video/Ss2wmGiLwrQ/w-d-xo.html

unamused dave.. check em out
toe riff's lol
For me only american footbal sounded like concious attempt at creating actual melody not just technical wankering
No song names 👎
