Ground Control Review: Truly Massive

  • In the 2000s, Ground Control was the cutting edge RTS title with colossal maps, fully 3D graphics and a very story driven campaign that greatly altered the Genre. 20 years later, it mostly holds up through intuitive mechanics and streamlined action, if you can excuse its more glaring faults.

The two coolest things about this game was the range of the artillery was somewhat realistic, with it shooting over mountains and whatnot, and the pause feature. The pause feature would stop everything and still let the camera move around, so you could pause right before artillery hits and see the incoming rounds and the tank shells and bullets and everything. It was so unique foe the time.

Sequels that doesn't answer the questions or deal with cliffhangers?
Hmm, where did I heard that? * look at Drakan *
I remember Ground Control back then really impressed me, at least the demo. For a moment until single digit frame per second stopped me from playing. Good thing there is GOG and game still holds up even decades later.

I appreciate the Ground Control series if only because they were pre-cursors to World in Conflict.

I can still remember the very good and satisfying sound effects and the exceptionally good voice acting. The sound of the artillery alone is just spot on.
This part of the immersion helps that despite the dusty graphics, the low resolution videos and the tiny UI, you can still "lose" yourself in this game after all these years.
Nevertheless, a remake / remaster would be extremely welcome.

A classic to be sure. I remember playing a lot of Battlefield at this time, and wishing there was a Ground Control total conversion for BF2 or BF2142. Being able to actually be a Crayven Marine or Jæger, or drive one of those awesome vehicles would be incredibly fun. I remember especially liking the design of the Rhino commando APC.
Just wish it had the ability to save during missions, and time compression. Those were some big maps.

For those that still want to play GC mulitplayer, I've put up the GCvets Multiplayer for New Players guide on up moddb (with a few additions).
Match days: Fridays, and Weekends at 10:00pm UTC (on GameRanger)
    Comments on the review:
If you've already used a loadout, you can click 'last' to use it. Even I forget to use in it multiplayer sometimes. And, there's an option to turn off left click attack/move.
Jeez, what did you expect when asking all of your units to move to the same small area? Of course they're going to clump up.
And another common mistake - always use anti-missile system and shields on your units rather than repairs (unless they're scouts, where instead use mines). It'll save you way more units as the entire squad gets to avoid damage, rather than just one getting healed when using repairs.
If you want a better experience, try using the balance mod the GCvets have created (you'll need it anyway for multiplayer).
Well, if they filled the environment with stuff, that'd just been more heavy performance on the computers of the time. Try extending the far plane out to the entire map and play on one of the jungle maps. I can guarantee that you'll notice some slowdown.
    Reinforcements exist in multiplayer.

This game should get a reboot or a HD remake, but with a much more complex and reliable combat system! But now, anti-air units should be able to fire on ground targets!
    It had INCREDIBLE atmosphere!
We even played some games a few years ago on GameRanger!
Crayven Corporation - Order of the New Dawn - Phoenix Mercenaries
    Blue/White-Grey camo - Red/Blue - Green/Brown-Purple
Or the franchise could get a new entry in a totally different game genre! Maybe instead of strategy go with tactical squad-based or team leading third person simulator!
Mostly just vehicles leaving infantry to be targets only. Reappearance of almost every ground vehicle the game and the expansion had, albeit reworked.
(Of course the Phoenix would need a total rework because they were crappy in their movement and they resembled the Order too much. They could be reworked to have wheels instead of being yet again another floating faction like Order.)
Renegades of Crayven, Order, & Phoenix meeting the hidden faction yet unseen! Maybe something totally different!
Tracks, floating, and wheels against..... walkers?
The combat physics and tactical positioning of War Thunder, the team management of Mount & Blade II Bannerlord, and a campaign that has at least the same feeling as Ground Control, maybe mixed with the story of Metal Fatigue.
The problem with expansion Dark Conspiracy in the past was:
    - Phoenix being boring characters when meeting people
    - Phoenix units having incredibly low acceleration and irritating
    - the differing design of the cinematics
    - the map arrangements were more boring and their color selection was sub par compared to the base game.
However it had some positive sides:
    - the terrain seemed more detailed and introduced more types altogether
    - however situationally usable they were, they did actually include new unit types for existing factions too, of which I at least liked 50%
    - while not exactly providing a new perspective of what came before since it played out as a sequel, the third faction VERY nicely mirrored the two previous ones
Ground Control : After looking into how epic the story was and how the cinematics portrayed it, and the music, this franchise could even make use of a movie adaptaion!

Ground Control heavily influenced the spiritual successor Deserts of Kharak, and I love both games. That being said, I was surprised how genuinely good GC1 looks even today, especially on widescreen resolution and AA. Considering its age, that's quite a feat.

Here's the thing with this series, without this and Ground Control 2, you wouldn't be able to have World in Conflict. Ground Control was the introduction to RTT games, Ground Control 2 improved the formula by giving points to fight over and the reinforcement mechanic, then World in Conflict uses all that and improves upon it to near perfection.

Don't agree GC2 improved the game, tbh, to me it was a step back. Lots of good ideas from the original GC didn't carry over, either, like the minimalist user interface that took up so little of the screen, or the way you had to make do with the force you were given at the beginning of the mission.

No ace card? no ACE card? it's been 22 years but if you're smart you can get AA units to target ground units by abusing the friendly fire mechanic. AA against ground units absolutely shreds ground units.
