The side bend thingie feels awkward for me too - I'm not great at side-bending in general so my body tried to make sense of the exercise as best it can. I actually did this workout again today and the thingie seemed s-l-i-g-h-t-l-y better and like it fit in the Pilates system with the other ones LOL New-to-you exercises can take some repetition to feel not awkward - but I agree - afterward all is nice. I just focused on starting the movement as though I were sitting up tall like in Footwork - imagine - even though the thingie is not actually seated. Hope this makes sense and have a great week! xox
