I've been studying this extraordinary Sonata for years, and performed it on my Graduation Recital (Oberlin Conservatory, 1975). I've also listened to dozens of recordings over the last 50 years, and and this performance deserves to be ranked with the best. Lipatti, Heinrich Neuhaus, and Cortot are some of my favorites, but Zak is now my new favorite! Thanks for posting this!
Every time, I hear this, I take eye-contact with him and mumble: Спасибо (spasibo= thank you), I practise these words: ".ты мой герой" (you are my hero).... and send him a little kiss and a wink. Wonderful man, I´m sure.
It was at Brussels, during the famous Queen Elizabeth piano competition. Gilels and Zak were jury members, not sure about Ogdon, maybe he was too despite his young age
A pity that it was apparently taken from a worn out LP...sometimes the needle couldn't handle it and jumps over the scratches...but the playing is absolutely great indeed! Btw I kind of like going from the Scherzo to the Largo "attacca"...
Yeah it is interesting. Reminds me of the attitude of filmmaker Guy Maddin, who often rolled with the punches dealt to his (especially but not exclusively) early films by lack of budget and technical know-how, instead of trying to iron everything out, and it led to some very interesting effects. I love this performance so much. His wisdom and experience shine through
transcendental musicality and technique ... Zak is one of the greatest pianists of the last century, but unfortunately few know him...

What an amazing performance! In 50 years as a pianist and a professional musician, I never heard of Zak. He certainly deserves to be better known!

A superb performance from a great pianist; thank you so much for sharing this treasure!
I wonder, what artmuseum, Gillels, Ogden and Zak are visiting on the above picture.

@@punkpoetry Well this museum resembles one in Copenhagen.
