  • This video takes a look at the North American Professional Hockey Feeder System.
Hockey players go up and down from the NHL to the minors all the time, but how does this system work? There are 6 professional hockey leagues in North America that all fall on a ladder with skill levels from the FPHL, SPHL, ECHL, AHL, and NHL. There is also the LNAH. The Federal Prospects Hockey League is the lowest on that ladder, and the National Hockey League is the top. NHL teams will have affiliates or farm teams in the AHL and ECHL.
Have you heard of these leagues?
National Hockey League - Major Professional
American Hockey League - AAA Professional Hockey
East Coast Hockey League - AA Professional Hockey
Southern Professional Hockey League - A Professional Hockey
Federal Prospects Hockey League - A Professional Hockey
Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey - Quebec Based Professional Hockey

so as someone who has a generally vague understanding of how Baseball works in the Minors, there's actually two Class A Minor leagues. There's High A and Low A. so with this in mind, High A is like the SPHL and Low A is like the FPHL. Following along? Good now lets confuse you a little bit
A level is just a class system and there's multiple "Leagues" under that system in baseball. Hockey being a smaller sport in comparison as well as being more spread across the world means that it really only requires the SPHL and FPHL be as big as they are. Other players go across the world and play abroad in all manner of leagues in Europe and some in asia.
However back on to the leagues topic. Low A has 3 leagues, the California League, the Carolina League, and the Florida State League. These are all teams that exist within the state or at least are somewhat close to them. High A has 3 leagues as well, the Midwest League, the Northwest League, and the South Atlantic League. the MWL and SAL both have 12 teams a peice and the NwL sits at 6 making a total of 30 teams. This is because every Minor League Baseball team no matter what class has an affiliate team. Unlike in Hockey, the Leagues at "Low A" and "High A" do not have an NHL affiliate.
If the NHL worked with the MiLB system it would basically look the same (With more teams in the ECHL as well to fill out the affiliates) and the SPHL would either expand to 32 teams with each region being put into it's own "League" or you would lump the SPHL, FPHL, and LNAH (If they would even go for that kind of thing) into the same Class A system and have an affiliate from whichever.
As an example it would be like the Minnesota Wild, Iowa Wild, Iowa Heartlanders, and Quad City Storm all being in the same affiliate branch. In reality, the Storm have what I'd conclude is a genuinely good relationship with the Heartlanders and they'll pass players up to the Heartlanders to keep them close to Rock Island while they're loaned out and then those players will go back to the QC once their loan time is up. The teams are close to each other and it's benificial for both teams and the SPHL players looking to move up from it.

I'd be interested in different hockey levels in Europe like Sweden, etc

It makes perfect sense if you care at all about parity

The FPHL and SPHL are like the old baseball system, Low A and High A

They should rename the ECHL to something with 3 letters i.e. NHL, AHL, WHL, OHL, KHL. Four letter league names are corny looking. And they should merge the Single-A league.

Nothing would be lost if the fed folded. That league is nothing but D3 and club hockey players that have no shot of reaching the show. Although that bum Trav Ridgen wouldn't have anywhere to play if it wasnt for the fed. 😂

It's simple. We take very young men and treat them like they are princes. We tell them they are bound for fame, glory, and riches. And then we feed them young women to keep them satisfied with abdolutely no concern for the damage it does to the girls.
That's the "feeder" system in a nutshell.
