Bring your Canadian passport and driver's license to a legitimate bank and open up a savings account. Then, deposit your pay checks into that account. You keep the entire amount. You don't want to lose money all year long through check cashing businesses. Whenever you end up leaving Detroit, go to the bank, withdraw whatever is left and close the account. Or, there's a CIBC bank in Birmingham, Michigan that's 30 minutes from Fraser. If you open an account there, then you can access the funds when you go back to Winnipeg or elsewhere in Canada because they are a Canadian bank.
Banks are just as scummy. Will charge u $20/month to keep your account open. Pay you only 1% interest on your balance… best bet is sign the back of your cheque, mail it home to Mom and have her PayPal u back your cash 💰

Your love for the game is infectious! This is what I try to give the 9 year olds I coach, and try to tell their parents. It isn't about who is best now, it is how much you can get the kids to enjoy playing because then they will stay in the sport for as long as possible.
The WORST player in the fed would still dominate any beer league man lol the skill level gap between levels of hockey is crazy. I know there is some really good open mens leagues where i am sure players use to play ahl / echl / fed are now in their 30's and still play mens league.... Story time... I played in a mens league against Anatoli Semenov. For those who don't know, he was an NHLer for a few teams but IMO more importantly he was a member of the Soviet National Olympic team (watch the documentary about them). I thought I had some skill and was fast... Hell no, I am a damn pylon compared to this guy and AFTER he retired, I can only imagine what he was like in his prime! Skating was effortless, puck handling smooth and fast. Accurate and hard passes, he never shot too hard, I think he went easy on us. It was mind blowing and dream crushing at the same time. When a former World Champion level pro skates with you and pushes you to go faster, while making it look like he isn't even trying.. holy shit, you realize how far you still have to go. Always strive to be better but do not let someone else's ability or words of "you suck or you'll never make it" deter you! You are the master of your own destiny. If you only play the Fed, so be it, still better than every wanna be beer leaguer out there. Livin the dream bud! I'd kill just to have the ice time let alone a team to play with.
Pro hockey players at any level are so good… even in the lower leagues it’s the 1% best hockey players. And every year there’s another wave of young players coming up, finishing Junior/College and coming to take somebody’s job. The Fed or any level where they’re paying you to be there is definitely not beer league. I know BeerLeague, played it for 20years. Played a few years in top division Beer League too where occasionally a “pro” would make an appearance and they were just better. Not always skill,speed,hands, often it was hockey sense which is hard to measure. Keep at it Trav!
the thing i noticed when you play beer league with guys that have played any level of pro is for the most part they are good guys. if you do the right thing and go to the right spot they will get you the puck, even though they could easily skate through the entire team, tell the goalie where they are gonna beat them, and then do it. It is fun to play with them, and it makes you better.

I sometimes go watch my nephew play and I'm thinking about go for a free skate on a weekend, but I'm hesitant because I know I'm gonna be so sh*t😂. Driving around to search for a place to cash out checks, that's such a foreign concept to me. 1. Goalie coaches care about how you get hit with pucks because it impacts the next potential chance. Coaches care what their goalie coaches say and care about. You’re at a level where it’s about being there to make that first save, but to be a starter you need to control the flow and pace of the game. You do that by swallowing all the glove and body shots, and kicking all the on ice and blocker shots into the corners. 2. Watch how Babs stays slightly forward, keeping his vision out front so he can see the puck all the time, but also giving him better mechanics to take more depth in tight. You have a tendency to sit back more. I imagine it is actually harder on your hips and knees too. Keep up the hard work! Your progress has been great so far!
Do they still have weekend only players?? Back in 2013 the fed would call a bunch of us to play games on the weekends for teams that had folded. They just searched for guys with NCAA level experience and asked them to play because there wasn’t enough teams left in the league to have an actual season. Everyone had real jobs so could never play on weekday games. They would end up getting 50 year olds from beer league teams who could barley skate. Felt so bad for the guys who actually played in the league…Luckily it seems to be much more stable now but the caliber of players seems to be all low level Jr and club guys. Use to have a decent amount of former NCAA and some CHL

Why? Why do you still have cheques? With all the development that has been done, you still use checks that can be the least secure way to pay, or get paid, with? Watching you guys run around to get these paid out is completely under the ice. Everyone has a credit/debit card linked to an account in a bank that has its clearing number to which an employer can transfer money directly without passing through intermediaries who in turn want to be paid for that service.
There was an FPHL team in my city but it was killed by Covid. I was a penalty box official for a while and ran the clock for the last season. I miss it. The boys on the team worked hard and just wanted to be better. But I often wondered how players can afford to even live on $125/week. I know the team here put a number of them up in apartments, but it can't be easy even with that.

Trav. I am so happy that you have such a good relationship with Babs! I have watched most of the Rockers games this season on the youtube feed and every game someone always posts "Lets be honest. Who is here because of Trav?" Every time I see that I say "I am. HOWEVER... Trav led me to the team, but the TEAM and Babs are keeping me here." There was an FPHL team in my city but it was killed by Covid. I was a penalty box official for a while and ran the clock for the last season. I miss it. The boys on the team worked hard and just wanted to be better. But I often wondered how players can afford to even live on $125/week. I know the team here put a number of them up in apartments, but it can't be easy even with that.

Trav. I am so happy that you have such a good relationship with Babs! I have watched most of the Rockers games this season on the youtube feed and every game someone always posts "Lets be honest. Who is here because of Trav?" Every time I see that I say "I am. HOWEVER... Trav led me to the team, but the TEAM and Babs are keeping me here." I follow you because I am a goalie, and we goalies recognize other goalie talent (which is why I am following you.) I LOVE Babs. He has incredible talent. I am definitely as much a Babin fan now as I am a Ridgen fan! Dont get me wrong, I am rooting for you and hope you get your break... but that guy - DANG! I love watching the games, and I WILL get to a Rockers game soon. Keep on keeping on, brother!
One question. What is it like to play in a pro league that (generally) only plays on the weekend? When I looked at the league schedule, it was kind of odd only seeing Friday and Saturday games (with a sprinkling of Wednesday and Sunday games.)

Home team is Elmira mammoth… from a fans standpoint, I think the league is great… I think the team goes, maybe even teams, go out of their way to meet and interact with the fans, especially the younger fans…games are very competitive and affordable…

Yup! we are having breakfat right now. Last time I talked to coach. We are 2a 2b. That is the plan until it changes. We both making the best of it but he had a great 1st game against port huron. I gotta step it up with him here
