I literally bought this pocket radio about 4 days ago and I LOVE IT. I can pick up my favorite station outside the city with no problems and went back home once I completely lost the signal. It was like listening to the station on a car stereo with a power antenna. I even receive AM station from 60-100 miles away. Awesome little radio. I'd definitely recommend it and especially on the go for those who like to do DXing

Your reviews are always so informative, entertaining, easy to follow, & well thought-out and executed. I especially appreciate that you record with good lighting & audio, without annoying background distractions [audio and video]. And thank you for not having background music of any kind - either in the room or edited in, on so loud that one cannot hear what you have to say. Yes, I've struggled with hearing loss for decades, and now deteriorating vision which really makes things tough, but I can always get everything out of your videos, without struggling or frustration; that's huge, U.P. Thinking ahead, can you tell me if your videos via TH-cam are closed-caption capable, to be able to enlarge "subtitles' " text, should the hearing deteriorate fully. In person, I must rely on supplemental lip-reading for in-person 'hearing'/conversation. But with recorded a.v. such as on TH-cam, often the narrator is off-camera so I'm only trying to follow hand gestures & the video presentation [no faces/clear lips/faces to read in correlation to possible text captions]. Sorry, didn't mean to get so rambly. But those of us struggling just to keep safe, and keep up w/our surroundings, do try to stay as independent as possible -- especially during times of urgency [i.e. the need for b.o.b. in the first place]! It's even more critical for anyone with known/pre-existing challenges to stay pro-active, alert, & prepared. While I was neither a Cub Scout nor a Boy Scout, I was a Brownie and Girl Scout as a child and teen, over 50 years ago [yeah, I'm a dinosaur], & was taught FIRST by parents -- who were ALWAYS prepared as much as was practical, then by scouts/community/school/church youth groups, etc.; pretty significant for both the times ['50's & '60's], as well as growing up in a very small, rural midwestern town [can you say CONSERVATIVE?] HA! Again, thank you for such excellent videos. Miss seeing you include your Youngster Prepper, at least as a brief part of your intro, or sign-off, greeting & waving to us 'TH-camrs'. Take care.

This is a great radio. Pre-sets are saved during battery changes. Only the clock has to be reset. No speaker and AAA batteries keep the radio small and light.

Nice review. I am not really seeing the use for these types of radios anymore. When you consider that you can purchase an inexpensive HAM radio such the BaoFeng UV-82 for $34. Not only do you get great radio reception with them, you will have NOAA and the ability communicate. While it is a little larger than this you can still put it on a pocket.... Cheers, Greg

Just got this radio. Pros = Simple to use, has station saving features, small, great reception, great quality! Even the ear phones they give you sounds good. It also has a bass feature, where you can listen to any song on the radio with extra bass. Pretty good.
Cons = You need to use battery, you can't see the lcd display when its dark.
OVERALL: great radio device. Love it!

you can get a good small speaker and solder on a length of wire and a Male headphone jack connector to the speaker wire and plug a speaker into the headphone jack, when you do that take the OEM specifications into account. Also If you make a plug in external speaker the wire length to the external speaker is your antenna so making it a little longer will also increase your reception, or have a antenna wire that could be 20 to 30 feet long with a male headphone jack on one side and a Female headphone jack on the other side plug that plugs into the radio first, then run the wire out like you would with a wire antenna, out and back to you for a larger antenna better reception and then plug the external speaker to the end of the longer antenna wire

If you replace the batteries quickly (under a minute) it will hold the preset channels. In 2-3 minutes they'll be gone. Don't take the warn batteries out and then go fumble in the drawer for five minutes for the replacements.

Well, it wouldn't make a good survival radio, but I can see the benefits for being an EDC. And even though there's no weather bands, if anything does go loopy with weather, you will be alerted via the emergency broadcast system, if you have it on. I can see where they would be great to listen to your favorite sportscasters while attending a wedding (low-profile, etc), or like you said, listening at a sporting event. Always like your vids, keep up the good work.

More importantly in a stadium, as online streams can be delayed by up to 2 minutes, a proper radio gives you LIVE commentary.

If you are watching the game, why do you need a radio announcer in the stadium to tell you what is going on?

  • @CanadianPrepper

Thanks for the review. IMO there's a lot of things wrong with this radio. As you said no weatherband, and additionally no shortwave, whether you'll ever use it or not it's nice to have it. Digital screens tend to get glitchy at some point and the device doesn't look rugged. Analog always lasts longer as evidenced in radios I've seen from the 50s that still work today... With prepping I always consider the longevity of goods. I think this device should be a lot smaller by now (considering how they can cram into a smart watch or ipod nano), with a back lit screen as you said. Waterproof, shockproof, duster oof etc. Is a dedicated one way radio with all these shortcomings becoming obsolete?
    I personally think so!

    • @TheUrbanPrepper
      @TheUrbanPrepper  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Good comment! I agree with your comments. I've had nothing but good results from Sangean radios with regard to quality and durability. As far as the entire radio technology, your closing statements would be awesome. I haven't found one that is waterproof, etc during my testing, although I would love to see one someday. Thanks again for watching!

In the UK it's re-badged as the Roberts Sports 995 . Identical apart from the labels and being in white plastic . It costs about £35 which is steep for a radio , but the reception is very good . The earphones have those large bulbous ends that are really uncomfortable , so I'll probably spend a fiver or so on something better .
If anyone knows of a case that fits this ,preferably with a belt clip I'd love to hear it .

I have the similar model Sangean DT-120 (the version with the two AAA batteries and the S meter). It 's a DSP radio, with amazing performance in FM. It is also VERY GOOD in MW reception, according to its size, with exceptional sensitivity and selectivity. Its internal ferrite antenna is very directive, helping the null of unwanted signals. It has an eight segment S meter (!!!), working in both FM and MW. I'm very happy with its overall quality !!!

I have carried one of these in my pocket daily for the last 5 years.
      Just ordered my third one.
After hundreds of AAA batteries, i keep coming back to this.
      Crystal clear almost everywhere,
Except when entering local grocery stores.
The AM stations all but disappear with a few exceptions.
FM stations can still get through the giant arrays of wiring and concrete,
      again with a few exceptions.
Works perfect at LA Fitness in Kent.
Risk it, roll the dice and buy one.

Hi! I've come here looking for some reviews (and maybe some advice) about what kind of radio would be better for a very optimized EDC kit space-wise. I've been considering a credit card-sized casio analog radio released in the 80's which have both AM and FM. It's kind of expensive because it's not that easy to get, but i realized i could sacrifice some space to get more optimal or reliable features (and save some bucks in the process),like standarized battery support, maybe better reception and the kind of stuff that would make a device reliable and optimal. What do you people think about it?

I do use iHeatRadio as well as other radio apps. I prefer having a dedicated radio for EDC purposes, mostly because I listen to a lot of sports talk radio during my commute. For me, it's like "why carry a knife if you already have a knife blade in your multi-tool?". I just prefer having a dedicated solution to certain functionality. Also, I find that the radio is more reliable and the batteries last forever. I need to recharge my smartphone daily but can use my radio for months without needing to change/recharge the batteries. FM (Frequency modulation - sound over broadcast radio) is the same as on a FM receiver or FM radio (receiver is a more technical name and is the same as radio which is a receiver of radio frequency...the frequency of channel in MHZ could vary but it is still broadcast in the FM mode = frequency modulation.
