I'm going to start breeding dubia for my future pogona, they are going to deliver a starter colony to me in a few days. This video is precious, I'm going to copy your chinese buckets idea! Thank you.
I can't even understand why I liked this video so much. I mean I wanted a chameleon colony at one point. I had a few pet mantids for a while.... Now I really want a mantis colony.
2 weeks dude leave them at least 2 months before doing this you will end up stressing them out and they will stop breeding and die. Trust me been breeding these for a long time now and i did it myself with first colony. I write date on the box and exactly every 3 months i sort them out and end up with thousands of babys. i'd recommend a minimum of 2 months though personally.
This is very helpful! I'm about to start a red runner colony for my Panther Chameleon, which seems similar to the Dubai roach process you show here. However I am curious why you separate the babies from the adults, other than easier cleaning purposes?
Well they aren't cockroaches, but I understand your concern. There is actually very little chance of them escaping as long as you are careful since they can't climb up smooth surfaces. Even if one does escape it's not hard to pick it back up.
Best detailed video I've come across and your voice isn't annoying. Do you have any tips for getting over roach fear? LOL. I have a small colony right now and I cant touch them at all!
If you are serious about the handling, I have an idea that may help you. Try using a pair of surgical rubber gloves to get you used to the handling. Nothing bad will happen and you can then possibly progress to bare hands (must wash them afterwards though) LoL. Fears can be overcome - just mind over matter. Give it a go and good luck.
Thanks for the info! Very informative. One question- where did you get the great racks and bins? Is the room then heated? I have to keep mine in the basement so need to keep on a heat pad. How many dragons or geckos do you have?
Great vid bud! added! I've just bought my first 30 small nymphs to rasise up to be a breeding colony (thought it would be better to raise them well fed etc).... I have maybe an odd question, will my 30 be ok for a continuous cycling feeding and breeding colony, or will I need to add some from a different gene pool at some point?
I think the reason they do that so is you can keep them in a separate container so you don't have to dig them out when you want to feed them to your pets.
Can you please help me out... I live in a desert(so there is like no humidity) how would you recommend keeping humidity up? Also what do you use to heat them if you do at all?
I think when they have a set up like using racks they will have heating pads in the back. Reason being why the put the egg cartons to the back of the container so they trap heat. I believe he's a gecko breeder and has a colony so that why he has that many racks, if you only have 1 or 2 you probably only need one rubber maid container. Search the roach farm, they got a nice tutorial for starting a colony.
@SaSobek Reptiles - I see this video is 6yrs old, so not sure if you still use TH-cam. I need to ask a Q about Dubias...... would you be willing to try and help please ?
"You'll have that where they'll just die." Ha ha, you sure it's not because you gave them brain damage? :P They all looked alive to me when you were first cleaning the cage up!
Thanks! This was very helpful! Going to be starting a colony soon myself. Can you tell me what size holes you drilled in the buckets for sorting? (and what size you should have drilled for the top bucket since it was a little too big) Thanks!
I'm curious how you sort out the dead/molts from the live colony. Always a hassle for me when cleaning out my colony I use for my Beardies and Tarantula. I got a similar size sorting system as well, but I always end up with the dead adults and molts still...any tips?
You don't have to. Some people don't. But it prevents the babies from being eaten and makes feeding easier. Say you're feeding a young leopard gecko and you need a small roach - just open the small roach drawer and grab one. You don't have to sift through all the other ones.
at first i was like oh my gosh people actualy keep roach colonies?but then i looked in the comments and thats when i saw that they are feeders for lizards whew, relief
Dubia roaches are tropical insects so they need a certain temperature to live so if some did escape they wouldn't live long enough to infest if you are living in a non tropical environment
Dude, if i could, i'd like this video a billion times, because the way you clean saves me a lot of time!
lol the roaches go thru the ride of a life time
That bucket system is pure genius!
It's basically like how you separate the larger and smaller pieces of hash through a lot of bags.
Wow. I never knew it would be interesting to watch the cleaning of a roach colony habitat. Lol!! You are one brave dude.
not to mention its pretty cool having your own colony of insects/reptiles
what are the sizes of holes that you used for the buckets?
BEST ROACH BREEDING/FEEDING VIDEO EVER!! Thanks so much for sharing this!!
Cool video. Those buckets are a great idea.
That bucket idea is ingenious.

Great video! We raise dubias too and only have one large tub.
I can't even understand why I liked this video so much. I mean I wanted a chameleon colony at one point. I had a few pet mantids for a while.... Now I really want a mantis colony.
The bucjets are the best idea ive ever seen!!!!
What size holes do you recommend cutting into the containers

what size holes do you drill into your buckets? Cheers for the videos!

Also, one question, how do you heat your colonies? I noticed you saying something towards the end, and was wondering how you did that. Thanks!
true... its also epic to see the reaction on my family member's faces when they see the tub just PRICELESS!!
And food dish? Are they textured on the outside of them?
What size holes did you use in the different buckets?
How big are the holes in the buckets?
do you go to any reptile shows and set up to sale or do you go to watch?
I see it has been asked many times but I have not seen the answer.. What are the hole sizes you use for each bucket? Thanks for your help!

You feed these Roach's to your Geckos?
What container is that that you are using?

How big are the holes in the bucket, and how to do you get the holes cut into the bucket?

Hm, so for one beardie, would you recommend switching to roaches to setup a sustainable food supply?

when you say egg sack do you mean from when the babies were growing inside? dont they give birth to live babies?
ive bred dubias for around 10 years and i never give them a water dish. is that just for humidity??

what would be a good amount of dub's to start a colony?
How often to you go through this process? It appears there was a small amount of poop for the yield you got in babies.
@SaSobek Reptiles - I see this video is 6yrs old, so not sure if you still use TH-cam.
I need to ask a Q about Dubias...... would you be willing to try and help please ?

Please post the Drill bit / hole sizes.... !!

what happens if you don't separate them and just leave them as is?
Thanks! This was very helpful! Going to be starting a colony soon myself. Can you tell me what size holes you drilled in the buckets for sorting? (and what size you should have drilled for the top bucket since it was a little too big)
Thanks!

where did you get the tiny dishes from? I am starting my first colony!
Hey man nice vid u gave me an idea for cleaning roach. I have a big colony over 2000 and It gets dirty pretty fast.:)
I'm curious how you sort out the dead/molts from the live colony. Always a hassle for me when cleaning out my colony I use for my Beardies and Tarantula. I got a similar size sorting system as well, but I always end up with the dead adults and molts still...any tips?

does the bucket sifting kill any of them?
Hope your colonies are growing :) when they get larger 5 gallon buckets become too small. 4 dollar totes from walmart made the same way work well also

Duck On Quack both
Where are you putting eggs for gecko

Out of 100 nymphs, how many would you say would be females? I can't find anything about their male to female birth ratio.
how do you heat them?
can they jump?
where do you get chicken mesh
do i have to separate them? babies from adults? thanks, im starting my own colony soon
No some people just recommend it so babies aren't eaten or anything along those lines
You don't have to. Some people don't. But it prevents the babies from being eaten and makes feeding easier. Say you're feeding a young leopard gecko and you need a small roach - just open the small roach drawer and grab one. You don't have to sift through all the other ones.
Shannon thesnakewhisperer

5:58 UHHH THERE FRIKIN ROACHEZZ!!!!!!!!!! LMFAO
Dubia roaches are tropical insects so they need a certain temperature to live so if some did escape they wouldn't live long enough to infest if you are living in a non tropical environment
i wonder if they breed faster in smaller or bigger colonies... i wonder if they breed faster if you seperate adults from nymphs??
these roaches are cleaner to breed than crickets
someone should sell those buckets with the pre-driller holes lmao
@gregjonesonline no clue they are 35-5/8" x 18-1/4" x 6-1/4" so what ever that is.
where can you buy those buckets-

very cool video also
Can i feed dubia roaches fruit that I bought from my local store?

I can't have these where I live the city won't let me and no pet stores sell them, the crickets here die before anything so all I can do is worms.
