      Robin, great video. I use the layrite clay from time to time, I rate it but it isn't perfect, for all the reasons you list. Of those products you have used, which product (clay or otherwise) would you say has the greatest hold on its own, without hairspray?

    • @NavarroVeys
      @NavarroVeys 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Got pretty fine hair and cement is just to thick and sticky for my hair it tends to rip out so many strands.
      Any of you ever tried Paul Mitchell's tea tree shaping creme?

      Robin James so basically layrite is a water based wax or a matte pomade?

  • @MrBudge72
    @MrBudge72 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    Some advice on using Layrite Cement Clay: wet your hands a little before using it. The product is water soluble, so it will thin and disperse the clay without having to work it in your hands forever. And it eases the application by allowing you to work it into your hair without feeling like you're pulling your hair out. I hope this helps someone else.

    • @ManForHimself
      @ManForHimself  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      But if I started doing that there would be no purpose in having a points system.

    • @funnyman808x
      @funnyman808x 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ManForHimself it could be part of the point system . Or you could give both products a score or amount of points and if its severely disappointing like the hold give them a 0 or negative points.

    • @faded2145
      @faded2145 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robin James I think there’s still a point in the points system. People clicking on these videos just want to know which one is better. If you think one is better, it should have more points. If something seriously underperforms, it makes sense to remove points

    • @force9485
      @force9485 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed.more points for the product that performs better (3 points) vs. less points (1 point) for packaging which is just window dressing for example. A point system is fine, just tweak it.

    Thanks for the review I needed someone to confirm what I thought myself about the Layright's hold. Halfway through the day it always seemed to fall apart and would be hard to put back together and it definitely made my hair feel heavy which was bad for me as I have finer hair. Overall great job, I really like your reviews :)

    I’ve been using layrite cement clay for years and have never had issues with the hold not being strong enough. A little goes a long way, so if your hair is being weighed down and it’s not holding well, you’re probably using more than you need

      Robin James well I figured that since it’s probably one of the heaviest products I’ve personally used it would make super weigh down fine hair and not give much hold compared to thick hair that could work with it more. I could be completely wrong but that’s just my 2 cents

    I understand where you're coming from on this Robin but I personally like the Layrite much more than you did. I wear a low fade with my hair on top about 1.5 inches and the Layrite is perfect for it. Unfortunately the Lockharts is a bit greasier and the wind at work seems to stand the hair up and leave it up, not a good look for me. But honestly, these are two of my top products, the other ones being my Gatsby Extra Hold Wax and 18.21 Clay. The Lockharts can become perfect for me if I use some dry shampoo to take away some of the greasiness of the wax. All about working with what we have, yeah?
    Thanks for the review!

    I have both, and the terrible hold and greasy look (at least for me) of Layrite is a 100% dealbreaker for me. It loses form so fast while Lockhart keeps it's hold all day for me. Lockhart also has a very nice subtle earthy scent whereas Layrite has a REALLY strong vanilla/rootbeer scent. Smells nice at first until I catch whifs of it all day long, I get sick of it pretty fast.
    Maybe there's better out there, but Lockharts matte clay is by far the best I've ever used

    • @EverythingisFire
      @EverythingisFire 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear ya on the Layrite. I'm actually on my 2nd container as it's been great during application & washout but I agree with you on the hold & greasy look. I use less to prevent the waxy sheen that comes with heavy applications but then it won't hold too great. I'm going to branch out to clays/pastes from here on out.

    I used to be a big fan of the Layrite Cement when my hair was shorter, but now that it has gotten a bit longer (4" or so), I really have come to dislike the layrite. The product is very hard to apply and ends up being way too heavy for my thick hair - makes my hair look gross and weighed down. Application is also really not good, I find there is way too much tug and resistance which makes it difficult to evenly distribute throughout. I have come to much prefer the layrite Natural Matte Cream as both a pre- and post-styler as my hair has gotten longer.

    As much as smell and feel and all that is important, at the end of the day how the product works is what's important to me. If the one that won out of these two is the more disappointing of the two, im not sure how it won. I do appreciate the in depth review of both of them, but if the one that is disappointing one, and the one that you would trust more lost, that seems like the weighting is off. I do love this series though, and that may be just because of what I'm looking for in a product. I appreciate the review and comparison between products!

    Does anyone really care about packing? Yeah it’s nice but the the product performance is the main variable. Love Layrite products! Primarily the cement clay and the super hold pomade. Cement for short to medium hair (below 4/5 inches) and the pomade for longer hair/above 5in. With Cement, a little goes a long way!

  • @llsnickers2372
    @llsnickers2372 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Layrite cement is an interesting one. I’ve used about half a jar and I will say that initially I loved it. Amazing hold, great semi-matte finish, and awesome texture. But after breaking through that top layer and working my way down the jar, I noticed that it started getting very very VERY greasy (like Vaseline topped with bacon grease) and losing a ton of hold. I tried everything. I even used the smallest amount that I possibly could, but it didn’t change anything. It has quickly become one of my most hated products because of its greasy finish and lack of texture after breaking through that top layer. I know a lot of other people share my hatred for this product because of the greasy finish, but there are some people that have never had this issue. It could be a quality control issue. Still, I would never purchase or recommend this product to anyone.

    • @tricky1506

    • @llsnickers2372

      FreeKickerz_Portland It’s probably a quality control issue or the climate I’m in. I’m definitely not doing anything to it. I’ve tried using literally the smallest amount possible to style my hair and it looks like I used Vaseline. All of my friends that have used it had the same issue (that makes 6 of us).

    Hi Robin, I just wanted to ask you one question: could you please reply with all the hair products you use (shampoo, conditioner, wax etc) ? And could you make a video of your daily/weekly hair routine ? I have really thin and fine hair, and I can't even have a faded hairstyle because you can actually see my scalp through the hair (like in your worst haircut ever video) so I was wondering if I could talk to an expert like you to assess how I could treat my hair better.
    Thank you in advance for the advice

    You gave points to lockhart for longest hold, but you forgot that you had to layer it with lockhart when styling so thats layrite shouldve gotten the points

    You should review Sickmore clay fiber.

    Hello Sir,
    I am in need of a good product for my Fine and Sensitive hairs.
    I thought Clay based products would be a better choice but getting Hanz de Fuko claymation in India is an expensive affair (considering my first outing with clays)
    Can you please suggest me some good clays that would help me keep a voluminous hairdo without damaging my hairs and scalp.
    With good price and availability in India..
    🙂

      try reuzel fiber. Thickening for fine hair. Such an excellent product. Seriously though, I would try the Lockharts if you can get it reasonable. It is an excellent product as well. Both are superb. I dont know what kind of products you have readily available though. Give me some info on what brands you can get your hands on and I'll see what I can find.
      I have 150+ pomades and am a hoarder haha. Dumb hobby, but at least I know a wee bit about what certain products can do at this point. Nostalgic Clay is awesome, as well as their matte water based

      I have brands like Loreal, Gatsby, osmo, Schwarzkopf, got to b and few other indian brands at my disposal.
      But they all are just for styling and cause damage to hairs in the long run.
      At present, i am using Loreal Homme Sculpte 3 and it will be used fully within upcoming 4-5 months.
      That's why i want to shift to a better and go to product after that. Which would help my hairs style without damaging it considering the Indian weather conditions.
      So, if i am about to buy a 20$ product, i should be sure enough that it will suit me and i can use it for an year or so
      That's why so much of research and talking. 😅

      What would you suggest sir ?
      Should i go for clay based products for fine, flat hairs and if yes then with which one should i start with ??

      naomaan khan the unfortunate truth is, you cant know what product will suit your hair completely until you try it. As I said before, typically reuzel is available in many countries. A lot of these brands are available through a supplier for your country. Check Amazon. Looks like the 4oz fiber is available for 2199 rupees

    I have a question, is it true that the layrite hair clay is a bad product because of the petrolatum in it? I saw it coming by on google and was wondering what is true of it.

    Great video! Can anyone help me with this question. I’ve been using Layrite Cement Clay for 4 days now and the build-up (despite using cleaning shampoo) is awful. My hair is greasy and limp.
    Does anyone know of a similarish product that ACTUALLY washes out easily?

    Your experience with hold is kinda strange to me ive been using cement clay for a year now and its hands down the best ive used after work and a hard workout my hair still looks great and it doesnt get too hard

    Never found a product that wasn’t a massive hold gel, that would hold my hair, so, Layrite for its initial performance and freeze it with hairspray I guess

    Layrite should have points removed for that hold and also for calling itself a clay when it contains no clay!

    I think you should remove points for the packaging. Because packaging is up to you, your taste, etc I personally like the lockharts packaging more so it's really just a personnal preference. Also, a product that has a great packaging can still perform poorly, as we all saw.

    You should make a video explaining which order you should use pre stylers. I’m new to this and I don’t know if I can use a mousse, thickening tonic and sea salt spray and I don’t know if you just throw it all on then blow dry or use one then blow dry then repeat? Also I have straight fine hair if you wanted to know
