Indonesia Global Compact Network proudly presented PT Singaland Asetama as a part of the SDG Innovation Accelerator for Young Professionals 2024!
As a vital player in Indonesia’s palm oil industry, PT Singaland Asetama (SGA) is a subsidiary of PT Eagle High Plantation Tbk, which focuses on cultivating, harvesting, and processing palm oil in East Kalimantan. They ensure the production of this valuable commodity is done sustainably while contributing to both the local economy and the global palm oil supply.
Dumaring Village has faced a significant threat, experienced a reduction in mangrove forest area from 127.7 hectares (28.6% of mangrove area) in 1988 to 42.6 hectares (9.5% of mangrove area) in 2021, and continues to decrease from year to year. To address this problem, SGA initiated a program called ‘Dumaring Village Mangrove Restoration and Rehabilitation.’
The permeable hybrid engineering approach is conducted by constructing semi‐permeable coastal engineering to temporarily dampen waves and capture sediment, creating a protected area near the coast for accretion. Once the seabed (sediment) surface rises, the mangroves will naturally regenerate, developing natural defenses to protect the interior from further erosion.
The nature-based permeable engineering approach leads to higher survival rates and results in a more biodiverse, resilient, and productive mangrove forest, enhancing community livelihoods and reducing disaster risk. Mangroves are crucial in combating climate change by absorbing blue carbon and thriving in saltwater environments. Thus, restoring mangroves can transform the area into eco-education tourism, boosting community livelihoods, raising environmental awareness, and preserving prehistoric heritage sites.
