The social effects of Universal Basic Income have to be considered first. Does handing out money to the poor ensures that the money is spent in the right manner? What's the guarantee that it is not spent on alcohol and cigarettes? Targeted subsidies ensure that money is spent where change is required for eg- building a toilet, a house, etc
Exactly...!!! For me this universal basic income is useless idea. First and foremost India needs records of all it's citizens and their connection with banks needs to be ensured. So that in times like these govt. benefits can reach them.

As Chief economic advisor, his job is to advise the government. He has lesser constitutional power than even a cabinet secretary. It's up to government to implement those ideas. Both Mr Krishnamurthy Subramanian and his predecessor Arvind Subramaniam had attempted to bring practice of good economics ( as reflected in extremely well researched economic survey that is published by CEA) in the government policy. Unfortunately politics got better of good economics.

Lost alot of respect for Shekhar Gupta today. Your view on Universal Basic Income as "it's a bad idea" is wrong. It's one of the most progressive idea to eradicate poverty. In India it's a must. Please do more research on UBI Shekharji , it's a great idea.

Please research on projects of MP and Delhi. There are research papers online. You can search on Wikipedia article of basic income in India. Check out references section. Check out research of Abhijit Banerjee.
Mr. Subramanian talked more like an epidemiologist then an economist, no projections, no figures, no vision just spoke what he crammed up in recent covid papers. Mr. Shekhar knows more than him.

He is a student of Rajan . He did his PhD under Rajan from Chicago university. Thus he will be just a disaster as Rajan was.
