  • Dartmouth is a charming British coastal holiday town located close to Torquay, Paignton and Brixham in the county of Devon in South West England. A real favourite for Devon holidays and breaks Dartmouth has boat trips, a castle, a Naval College and more! Let's explore Dartmouth together and see why people holiday here.
Dartmouth is situated on the banks of the River Dart, which flows out to the English Channel. The town has a rich maritime history and has long been a popular holiday destination for both domestic and international travelers. Here are some reasons why you should consider holidaying in Dartmouth:
Scenic location: Dartmouth is nestled in a beautiful part of the country, with rolling hills, green valleys, and stunning coastlines all within easy reach. The town itself is surrounded by stunning countryside, with beautiful beaches, cliffs, and moors all within a short drive. The River Dart is also a highlight, with its clear waters and picturesque surroundings.
Rich history: Dartmouth has a long and fascinating history dating back to the 11th century. It was a major port and naval base during the Middle Ages and played a significant role in the country's maritime history. Today, the town is home to a number of historical landmarks and attractions, including Dartmouth Castle, which dates back to the 13th century, and the Naval College, which was founded in the 19th century.
Cultural attractions: Dartmouth is home to a number of cultural attractions, including galleries, museums, and theaters. The town also hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the year, including the Dartmouth Music Festival, the Dartmouth Food Festival, and the Dartmouth Royal Regatta, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious regattas in the world.
Outdoor activities: Dartmouth is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise, with a range of activities on offer, including hiking, cycling, fishing, and water sports. The South West Coast Path runs through the town, offering stunning views and challenging walks. The town is also home to a number of golf courses, as well as a number of other sports facilities.
Delicious food and drink: Devon is known for its delicious food and drink, and Dartmouth is no exception. The town is home to a number of restaurants, cafes, and pubs, serving up a range of local specialties, including seafood, locally-produced meats, and artisanal cheeses. The town is also home to a number of breweries and distilleries, producing a range of beers, ciders, and spirits.
Overall, Dartmouth is a charming and picturesque town with a rich history, a range of cultural attractions, and plenty of outdoor activities on offer. It is the perfect holiday destination for those looking to relax, explore, and enjoy all that Devon has to offer.
Since 1863, Dartmouth has been the home of initial Naval Officer training in the UK. Today, it is the only remaining Naval College in the country.
Besides being nationally known as one of the prettiest coastal towns in the UK, Dartmouth has much more to offer than just beautiful scenery and gorgeous streets.
An idyllic place to relax and unwind, whether shop-hopping or walking along watching the boats bob on the beautiful River Dart, Dartmouth is a visitor's dream. Dartmouth is one of the most beautiful towns in the country, but good looks aren't all - the town has a strong sense of community and it's not surprising that more and more people want to live here.

We often take a day trip to Dartmouth. Bus 120 from Paignton to Kingswear then short walk downhill to the ferry over to Dartmouth. Spend time at our favourite cafe which is tucked away up one of the side streets near the church. Going back the long way by bus 92 from Dartmouth to Totnes then back to the outskirts of Paignton. Scenic day out when the weather is clear.

Love your videos, I live on the bank of the River Dart towards Totnes, so not far from Dartmouth. When you next visit Dartmouth, at the cannon, walk forward past the telephone box and turn left. Past the slip to the car ferry There is a lovely street, with many Tudor buildings, down to the Bayard's Cove/Quay.old maritime area...keep up the good work!!..😄

Thanks for going to Dartmouth, grew up in the town, in fact my whole family did, remember running around these streets as a kid, fishing on the seafront and playing footy at Coronation Park plus getting up to general mischief, remember falling in the boat float when I was jumping from boat to boat, fortunately the tide was out far enough. 😀 👍

I went to Dartmouth a few years ago, loved it! i took a lot of lovely photos its such a beautiful area, i recommend going in summer it looks even more beautiful and maybe going on a boat trip, theres more to explore, round the corner is the small Dartmouth Castle that is nestled on the rocks near the sea. It's a shame some of the lovely buildings had work being done to them in this video and had scaffolding up though & those seagulls were being extra noisy lol, i've looked at videos recently of Devon by drone and looks incredible! would love to live there, thanks for the video.

A lovely spot indeed ( especially in springtime) . On our first visit ( to stay in Kingswear) in 2010 we were thrilled to find a cruise ship in the estuary, just out from the ferry pontoon. A rare event indeed, not that this delightful area needs any embellishment what with the steam train, paddle steamer and NT properties nearby, we’ve been back 4 times to stay. Thanks from Oz 🦘🇦🇺

The last time I visited Dartmouth, the ship from the Onedin Line was moored up in the harbour. They also had a restaurant called Fairfax that provided a great service. It was about 1971, but I can still recall that wonderful place. 😀

  • @BB49.
    @BB49. ปีที่แล้ว +5

The platform 1 restaurant was actually the train station for the railway that was never built as I believe Permission could not be got to build a bridge across the river Dart thus no railway line ever came to Dartmouth and the station is all that remains

. We used to go over on the ferry regularly and buy fish and chips from Rock fish . We would sit on a bench under the wooden shelter looking out over the water . Then my husband would have ice cream from the little shop next to Rockfish as you came up off the ferry . Then we would drive to Slapton Sands before returning home .

Delightful walk and your video is an excellent introduction to a lovely seaside town. The highlight of course was the fish cages. I was waiting for the moment when nausea caused by the smell would have you lose balance and topple over into the murky waters of the Dart River. Alas, that did not happen. My favourite building was the grand Royal Castle Hotel, which is spectacular. I am very tempted by the apple pies in the windows of the Sloping Deck Restaurant (I had to look that one up in Google Maps). I am hoping to visit this town one day.

I've only discovered your videos today and was very interested, I went to Dartmouth 4 years ago, we wanted to go to the castle first and the sign said it was situated in the town, but it was wrong!. We decided to walk to it, thinking it would be a short walk, we ended up walking nearly an hour, it's quite a way from the town, but did finally find it at mouth of the estuary looking out to sea 🌊. We had to pay admission in the giftshop which had the most gorgeous view through a big glass window by the till, I just stood there for ages just staring at the view!, we had good look round the castle and one of the staff told us there was a small boat ferry every twenty to forty minutes which takes you back to the harbour in the town. I wish we'd known about it as it would've saved us a very long and tiring walk, I loved Dartmouth and would love to go again if get a chance!. It was nice to see your very recent video there and can see that it hasn't changed that much even with the pandemic, seeing a lot of shops and businesses close. I like your channel and can't wait to see where you go next!.

Lived in Dartmouth as a boy before "getting away" into the RN. Much has changed but the biggest shock of all was to see that Dave's Cafe in Foss Street is now a knicker shop. Did anyone see a bank?

I have not been this place recently before but I would imagine if I went there one day.
